Fans criticise PGMOL as Wolves’ Ruben Neves calls out referees for time added on at end of games

Fans take to criticise PGMOL as Wolves’ Ruben Neves calls out referees for the time added on at the end of games with the season ending.

The 26 year old midfielder revealed during his post-match interview that the referees were told to add an exact amount of wasted time.

This comes as Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp criticised Aston Villa for their time-wasting tactics.

Neves said the officials follow the World Cup initiative which saw each moment that the ball was out of play being added to the end of every half. The result was that the additional time exceeded five minutes each time. But he questions why now, with two games left of the season.

Yerry Mina’s goal in the ninth minute added time at Molineux secured a point for Everton, while Liverpool had to play 10 minutes of stoppage time after the second half against Villa, as Roberto Firmino’s equaliser in the 89th minute.

It’s claimed that four players were booked for delaying of play, goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez with 13 minutes remaining, but Lucas Digne was the first of his teammates booked in the 53rd minute before Ashley Young and Ezri Konsa were noted in the officials book for their time-wasting.

Speaking after their draw, the Wolves skipper said: “The only thing I can say is the nine minutes [of stoppage time]. I asked the ref why.

“He said they’ve been asked to play exact times. I don’t know why they haven’t been doing it all season. If you want to do it, you need to do it all season and not only in the last two games.

“We’ve had some games here where they [only] gave four or five minutes. They said we’re the Premier League, not the World Cup. Now they are trying to be the World Cup.”

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was colourful in his dissection of the gamesmanship and described it as a ‘football problem’ that is happens too often.

“The time wasting was… wow,” the 55-year-old said, as per Liverpool Echo. “We saw against Sevilla the ball boys left the country, Roma against Leverkusen, how long was the ball in play? Ten minutes [added time] was fine, but we should have an extra five minutes within the 10.

“Everybody is doing it. We have seen in too many games this season, it has nothing to do with the result today, just a general football subject.”

Martinez was booked on the 77th minute and Klopp reacted: “It is really difficult, I think it is an important thing to talk about but I am afraid you’ll make it.

“I think the problem is obvious. You say it’s like smart and if you [time-waste] like that it’s fine but I think the whole season you saw it too often. It’s not always time-wasting it’s a rhythm-breaker as well. You’re in the last minute and you’re is really going for it and then all of a sudden an opponent player goes down.

“I think today was obvious 10 minutes was OK, you just have the feeling that in these 10 minutes there could have been another five. That’s a bit of a problem. Again, it’s nothing to do with the result or the day or in our season. But it would be cool if we could talk about that as well.”

As mentioned, fans took to criticise PGMOL as Wolves’ Ruben Neves calls out referees for time added on at end of games…

@leedsthat: What the absolute @FA_PGMOL? Howard Tangled Webb of awful officiating. Sort it out

@MightyLeeds64: So basically the ref has decided to end games when it suited him (or at a time for whichever team he preferred gained this best possible result). Disgraceful

@SunnySalh98: That is genuine corruption to suddenly change the laws with two to go

@SouthbankQQ63: Not surprised at all. Ruben letting the cat out the bag

@SirBobbyKeegan: The officiating in the premier league this season has been absolutely abysmal.

@ilmmad512: Corruption

@MILES_GROWCOTT: Surely you can’t change things like that all of a sudden, rule changes only come in once a new season starts or am I wrong?

@GeordieCorpse: @premierleague is corrupt, let’s just change the rules with 2 games remaining eh.

@TieDyeWhite: There’s lots of things to hate about modern football but the PGMOL is top of the list for me. Absolutely useless.

@deejay11985: Thankfully there was nothing riding on the game for us today but fuck me it’s clear for all to see there is corruption within the premier league.

@dogon22: @FA_PGMOL you’re letting your corruption show again

@salopwolf: another PGMOL mystery like the Lemina yellow card at Southampton for being the third player to approach the ref, they make it up as they go along and when you have inept spineless people like David Coote as the ref it’s always going to be a shambles

@NCbantz: Absolutely ridiculous this mind! How can you change the rules for the last 2 games? Howard Webb is taking the piss.

@beton_wayne: Premier League is corrupt. To change the rules when they feel like it. They need to apply their own rules to themselves. FFP for instance. Everton will survive because the league will make sure of it. Cxnts

@jspencer_1: Ruben is a hero on and off the pitch. Never afraid to call them out, what a guy

@1_JCM: Even players think it’s strange 😳👀

@bigGraemeD: Absolutely stinks this, you can’t make such a significant rule change for the last two games of the season…

@Woottiee: Making it up as they go along (again)

@JoeyDavies95: I’m sick to death of it it’s corruption at its best seeing it every other day now in football. Prem want the dirty nogadogs in the league next year the horrible victims, celebrating a point like they won the champs league. Hope Leeds win today đŸ‘đŸ»

@robbowwfc: The @premierleague is genuinely approaching Serie A levels of corruption and the @FA_PGMOL are fully complicit. Bet Howard Webb won’t come out and explain this will he 💰💰

@JackPLoftus: This doesn’t sit right with me at all after watching that
They’ll survive any uproar from our perspective as we have nout to play for now, but @FA_PGMOL cannot just change the rules on added time for just a couple of games. You do it for all games, or none of them. #wwfc

@1sarahmac: I hope on his last game for us he just head butts the ref, worst ref of the season yesterday and that is saying something x

@BrianNUFC: This is a scandal. Refereeing in this country was already ridiculous. You can’t change it with two games to go.

@YamYamLukeyT: But but but there’s no corruption in football.

@LUFC_SZN: If anything this just suggests even more that the FA are desperately trying to keep their little agenda, it’s blatantly obvious which clubs they want to succeed..

@MrPauloGoodman: Was a quite frankly bizarre and confusing performance by the ref all game. Seemed hellbent on giving Everton opportunities to get the ball in to the box. Was just a head scratcher and even with the ‘exact time’, how they found 9 minutes is beyond everyone #wwfc
