Roberts said he joined Mansfield Town after being attracted by the club’s ambitious vision and progress, as discussed with the manager.

His career began at Walsall, where he progressed to the first team, followed by stints at Northampton, Middlesbrough, Barnsley, Millwall, and a brief loan at Rainworth.

He highlights a standout performance against Mansfield while at Northampton, contributing to 20 clean sheets that season.

Liam aims to secure the number one goalkeeper spot, emphasising the need to prove himself daily and bring his experience to the team.

He describes his commanding style, suited for lower leagues, and believes he’s at his peak.

His goals include keeping clean sheets to support team success.

Familiar with many Mansfield players from past encounters, he’s excited to integrate and contribute to a promotion push in League One, anticipating a strong season despite past injury challenges.

Liam is enthusiastic about the club’s progress and facilities, ready to give 110% for the Stags.

Speaking to the club media, he said: “I think we’re going to have a right go you know. I spoke to the gaffer before I went away and towards Christmas time we were obviously in the play-offs and really pushing for it.

“Unfortunately, we had a few injuries – obviously height of the season then – so yeah, but I think we’ll have a right go again and go for that promotion.

“At the start of the season you might as well set you’re targets as high as possibly can and ultimately can we get there? I believe in this team we’ll have a right go at doing it.”

He added: “Yeah why wouldn’t you be [excited about the move], it’s a great club.”

On making his third signing of the summer, manager Nigel Clough said: β€œWe needed a first-choice goalkeeper and we think Liam fits the bill perfectly. He’s played against us over the years and we’ve been very impressed by him.

β€œHe has Championship experience as well as a lot of experience in League One. He’s at a good age and we’re very pleased to have him as our number one.”

Last season, Roberts made six appearances for Millwall, including two in the Championship and four in cup competitions.

He made national headlines after an FA Cup match, where he was red-carded for a dangerous tackle on Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta, who required 25 stitches in his ear.

Roberts received a six-game suspension for the “reckless” challenge, apologised to Mateta, and later disclosed that his family faced death threats following the incident.
