FA Cup upsets galore in the First Round Proper

The much anticipated First Round Proper of the FA Cup got underway this weekend, fair to say there were upsets galore too.

It got underway on Friday night, League Two side Harrogate Town were too strong to handle for their opponents Skelmersdale United, who were the lowest-ranked at this stage, in the ninth tier of English football.

The North West Counties Premier League club found themselves behind in the first minute when Calvin Miller scored after Mark Beck had hit the post.

Beck got his second goal of the game prior to half time with a glancing header. Jake Lawlor saw his deflected effort end up in the back off the net to make it 3-0, then Aaron Martin headed home in the 73rd minute, Skelmersdale getting a consolation via Danny Mitchley with minutes remaining.

In the Saturday early kickoffs, League Two side Bradford City thrashed National League South club Tonbridge Angels 7-0 away from home, goals coming from O’Connor (6′), Clarke (14′, 44′), Donaldson (55′), Samuels (68′), Pritchard (83′), Wood (90’+1).

Exeter City of League Two only just made it through to the Second Round of the FA Cup but were made to work hard for their 2-1 win by an impressive performance from National League North side AFC Fylde.

The non-league side had been in front thanks to Jordan Hulme in the 11th minute, before Matt Jay and Alex Hartridge got the hosts ahead by the 33rd.

Right then, let’s get on to the upsets before we look at the results in full…

The biggest shock came at League Two Colchester United, with non-league side Marine knocking them out on penalties, after drawing 1-1.

The Northern Premier League Division One North West side took the lead through Anthony Miley in the 21st minute before Harry Pell got one back for the U’s in the second half.

Marine then stepped up and came away from Colchester, winning 5-3 in the shootout, cue scenes!

National League side Stockport County pulled off a 2-1 victory against League One club Rochdale, and one of their goals was simply stunning.

Wayne Rooney’s brother John scored from within his own half to put the Hatters one up after five minutes, looking up inside his own half, spotting the ‘keeper off his line and executed it.

Stockport went 2-0 up shortly after, a corner was cleared as far as Connor Jennings on the edge of the area, he got the ball on his left foot and hit a low shot which was flying wide, but Alex Reid was there to turn it home from close range.

Rochdale got one back on the 24th minute, Matty Lund with a header from close range. However, Stockport held on for the win and book a place in the next round.

Swindon Town, another team that tend to get knocked out by a non-league club in the FA Cup, did just that this weekend.

This time it was National League North side Darlington who had former Newcastle player Adam Campbell to thank, scoring twice, either side of Swindon’s leveller with Brett Pitman tapping in.

National League Dagenham & Redbridge hit Ian Holloway’s Grimsby Town of League Two for three. Scott Wilson putting the Daggers one up after 9 minutes.

Windsor scored from the spot to level the tie. Dagenham’s Justham guessed the right way but couldn’t keep the spot-kick out on the 60th minute.

Scott Wilson got his second goal for the club on the 90th minute, before Mitch Brundle scored from his spot-kick in the 96th minute to secure Dagenham’s place in the second round.

A non-league upset now and Canvey Island of the eighth-tier have knocked out a level above in Banbury United.

It was all thanks to Hubble (23′) and Ronto (71′) – scoring either side of Johnson’s 68th minute equaliser and put the Essex side into the next stage of the competition.

King’s Lynn Town, the National League newcomers and in the First Round Proper for the first time ever, got a late winner to knock out Port Vale of League Two.

On the 82nd minute, Adam Marriott produced the most incredible footwork in the box and his effort fell to Sonny Carey who smashed the ball in from close range.

A surprise between two EFL sides saw League Two Mansfield Town, who this week appointed Nigel Clough but for today saw caretaker boss Richard Cooper in charge, produce a 1-0 win against League One side Sunderland, a team many non-league clubs wanted.

Gordon whipped in a wonderful cross and George Lapslie headed home to send the Stags into the second round and pick up their first win in 15 games in all competitions this season.

Upset or not, whatever you want to call it, we have to mention Boreham Wood‘s victory over league above Southend United.

A superb start to the game, on the 6th minute, Tshimanga did well enough to give Jamal Fyfield a big chance before the defender went on to get his second goal of the competition.

Shortly into the second half, Mark Ricketts then pulled out a volley from the very top tier to fire Boreham Wood two in front following Rhead’s effort against the bar.

Southend got one back shortly after through Brandon Goodship in the 59th minute, then on the 63rd minute, substitute Terrell Egbri converted from close range, having only been on the pitch for a few moments. 2-2 by this point.

Extra time the tie went into and Tshimanga was brought down in the box on the 91st minute, then went on to score the resulting penalty, making it 3-2.

It was 3-3 by the 100th minute. Shrimpers midfielder James Olayinka ran half the length of the pitch, cut onto his right foot and found the bottom corner with a fine finish.

A late winner couldn’t be sparked by Southend at Roots Hall, a gloomy time for the club right now even if they have just prevented themselves being wound up recently.

Penalty shootout it came to and it was Boreham Wood that came out winners, 4-3.
