THE FA’S REVIEW OF THE FIFTH ROUND
The Emirates FA Cup fifth round provided plenty of excitement on Tuesday, including one big upset as the first three sides secured their place in the quarter-finals.
Things got off to a slow start with all three games goalless at half time but there was plenty of action after the break and even in extra time as Middlesbrough knocked out Tottenham Hotspur to progress to the last eight alongside Premier League duo Manchester City and Crystal Palace.
Josh Coburn’s stunning winner in the second half of extra time sent Middlesbrough into dreamland and one game from Wembley as a sold-out Riverside Stadium went wild after witnessing a 1-0 win over Antonio Conte’s Spurs.
Boro saw off Manchester United on penalties in the fourth round and made it back-to-back Premier League scalps after knocking out Tottenham, who for the third season in a row exited the competition at the fifth round stage.
The evening’s late kick-off could not be decided inside 90 minutes as despite a hatful of chances for both sides and even a disallowed goal for England captain Harry Kane, neither Middlesbrough nor Tottenham could find a goal.
The first 15 minutes of extra time were similarly tense and action-packed but without the crucial finishing touch. It was only when teenage substitute Coburn beat the offside trap and lashed powerfully past Hugo Lloris in the 107th minute that the tension dissipated on Teesside.
Matt Crooks’ pass found the 19 year old in space on the right-hand side and after he finished superbly from a tight angle to give Boro their eighth consecutive win at home, this time in front of the first sell-out for five years.
Chelsea denied Luton Town a fairytale upset at Kenilworth Road, coming from behind twice to defeat the Championship side 2-1 in the Emirates FA Cup fifth round.
Reece Burke put the Hatters ahead after just 102 seconds and while Saul Niguez levelled for the visitors, Harry Cornick gave the home side a 2-1 lead going into the break.
But second-half goals from Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku ensured Chelsea’s safe passage to the next round, just days after Thomas Tuchel’s men lost in the League Cup final.
Meanwhile, Southampton booked their place in the next round with a 3-1 win over West Ham and Liverpool defeated Norwich 2-1 at Anfield to ensure they joined Chelsea in the last eight of the Emirates FA Cup.
