9th tier match moved to League One stadium following crowd trouble in previous meeting

A 9th tier match has been moved to a League One stadium following crowd trouble in the two sides’ previous meeting earlier this season.

Congleton Town’s game against league leaders Macclesfield will be played at Crewe Alexandra’s Mornflake Stadium at the end of this month.

The two teams played each other back in August 2021, and it saw Robbie Savage having to run onto the pitch to get to a nearby stand to tell the crowd to behave.

MACCLESFIELD STATEMENT:

Arrangements for the upcoming North West Counties Premier Division match between Congleton Town and Macclesfield FC have now been finalised.

The all-ticket match will take place at Crewe Alexandra’s Gresty Road Stadium on Saturday 26th March with a 15:00 kick-off.

Crewe Alexandra will manage the fixture under their normal matchday protocols, with spectator segregation in full operation.

Tickets are priced at £10.00 for all supporters – with the exception of Under-12s, who will be charged the concessionary rate of £5.00.

All ticket sales will be managed by Crewe Alexandra’s ticketing portal and further details regarding this will be announced in due course.

Both Congleton Town and Macclesfield FC have worked hard to ensure that all genuine supporters are able to watch the match in a safe and enjoyable manner.

Ahead of the game, we urge all supporters to play their part by conducting themselves appropriately and respecting each other throughout.

Please note that there will be no alcohol on sale within the Stadium and it is not permitted to bring alcohol through the turnstiles.

Anyone found with alcohol within their possession will be ejected immediately.

Let’s all look forward to what promises to be an exciting match and an enjoyable occasion for us all – whatever the result!

Social media footage taken from The Leasing.com Stadium in Macclesfield six months back shows supporters clashing the North West Counties League clash.

Images from the ground also show yellow smoke bombs being let off shortly before kick off, an early indicator of the trouble that played out.

Seven men were arrested for their involvement in the fight.

Officers were made aware of fracas at the Moss Rose football ground at around 4.50pm on Monday 30 August.

Police rushed to the scene and a dispersal order was put in place in the area.

Detective Inspector John O’Driscoll said: “The arrests today are a culmination of hard work and dedication across a number of departments who have had to gather evidence and analyse hours of CCTV and mobile phone footage to find those responsible for the disorder.

“The investigation is very much continuing and as enquiries continue further arrests will follow.

“No-one should go to a football match and be subjected to violence – we are committed in doing everything possible to prevent this from happening.”

Superintendent Peter Crowcroft said: “While the majority of football fans who attended the match were well behaved and had an enjoyable time, unfortunately there were a small number who were intent on causing harm. This will not be tolerated in our town.

“Today’s action should act as a warning to football fans looking to visit Macclesfield to cause trouble and shows that we will investigate any reports of crime made to us and take relevant action where possible.”
