Ex-Newcastle United player Adam Armstrong celebrates his goal for Southampton in front of Sunderland fans on Saturday afternoon.
As a lifelong Magpies supporter, he just had to celebrate in front of Sunderland fans in the away end after scoring a controversial penalty.
The Southampton forward was playing a key role for Russell Martin’s team in the Championship match at St Mary’s Stadium, where his team went ahead thanks to Stuart Armstrong just 9 minutes in.
As the first half played out, the Newcastle-born forward then had the opportunity to convert a penalty kick, but as he approached the ball, he fell.

Armstrong began his approach for the penalty kick, only to slip upon kicking, resulting in him making contact with the ball twice before it crossed the goal line, beating Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson.
Despite protests from Sunderland’s team and coaching staff regarding the legality of Armstrong’s kick, the striker was unfazed and went to celebrate in front of the away fans from Wearside.
Of course, Sunderland supporters voiced their anger towards Armstrong, although their frustration will also be attributed to their team’s poor performance leading up to that moment.
Despite Southampton’s superiority, the Black Cats got it back to 2-2 thanks to Romaine Mundle’s goal in the 60th minute and Jobe Bellingham towards the end of the second half.
However, Southampton then re-took the lead as Joe Rothwell netted the third goal in the 77th minute. Rothwell then added another goal just three minutes later, extending Southampton’s lead to 4-2.
Southampton keep pace with their automatic promotion rivals having been given a scare by Sunderland.
The Saints are now six points off second in the Championship table. Sunderland meanwhile are down to 12th having lost their sixth game in a row.

Russell Martin: “Nobody can watch that game and say we didn’t deserve to win but I am annoyed we have conceded two. It is going to be an interesting run-in with more twists and turns. Leicester were done and dusted but now have teams close. We were written off.”
Sunderland’s Mike Dodds: “I am not going to say we deserved to win because you don’t when you concede four goals, but there were periods of the game where we were better than Southampton.”
