Everton praised for “classy” response to Chelsea fans’ chant condemned by Jamie Carragher

Everton have been praised for the “classy” response to Chelsea fans’ chant which was also condemned by Jamie Carragher on Twitter.

Unfortunately with it being that time of year, a number of fans from the away end aimed chants at the Merseysiders on Sunday.

Chants of “Feed the Scousers” and “Sign on sign” could be heard, but as that happened, Everton displayed a message on the screen.

Alogn with a photo, they captioned their social media post: “The work @SFoodbanks (Fans Supporting Foodbanks) do is incredible and, unfortunately, vital in our communities.

“Foodbanks up and down the country need all of our support – especially at this time of year.

“We are proud of all you do. 💙❤️”

Last week, Everton received chants such as these twice in the space of four days, with Newcastle fans singing about poverty throughout their side’s 3-0 loss at Goodison Park last Thursday.

Chelsea fans did again as soon as the game started, but it was the hosts who came out the classier while also having the last laugh as the Toffees won 2-0.

Jamie Carragher tweeted: “Feed the scousers 😩 Delighted Everton have gone in front after the nonsense getting sung by the Chelsea fans. #EVECHE”

Then added: “Made up the blues won!!”

Abdoulaye Doucoure and Lewis Dobbin were both on target as they helped pull their side further away from the Premier League drop zone while the visitors fall into the bottom half.

Player ratings (as per Sky Sports)

Everton: Pickford (7), Young (5), Tarkowski (7), Branthwaite (7), Mykolenko (8), Harrison (6), Gueye (6), Garner (7), McNeil (7), Doucoure (8), Calvert-Lewin (6).

Subs: Patterson (6), Onana (6), Beto (6), Dobbin (8)

Chelsea: Sanchez (5), James (5), Disasi (6), Badiashile (6), Cucurella (6), Caicedo (6), Fernandez (5), Palmer (6), Gallagher (6), Mudryk (5), Broja (5).

Subs: Colwill (6), Sterling (5), Jackson (5), Petrovic (5), Maatsen (6)

Player of the match: Vitaliy Mykolenko (Everton)

Everton manager Sean Dyche on Lewis Dobbin: “Delighted for him, he’s worked very hard at his game. To see him go and strike the ball, we know he’s a good player, his reaction impressed me, it was authentic, no nonsense dances, and the rest of the team joining in, in an authentic way.”That’s what we’re trying to build here, authenticity to wear the badge with pride and we’ve done that today.

On beating Chelsea: “As a manager you can only guide what you think is right, you can’t make anyone do anything but what you can do is give them the format to say ‘this will reward you’. I’ve been in the premier league a long time and it will reward.”We’ve got quality as well, so finding that mixture has been important, it’s coming. We had to secure our connection with the fans to grow. We’ve had 10 points taken off us, so we keep going.”

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino, speaking to MOTD: “Football is about scoring goals and we were not clinical in front of goal. I’m really, really disappointed. We didn’t get the point we deserved. I think we were better but we didn’t get what we wanted.”This was a game to play and to win. It’s a problem we need to check. We need to analyse the reality. We need to talk and to try and improve in the next transfer market.

On Reece James’ injury: “He felt something in his hamstring. It’s not so nice for him to suffer another injury. He is an important player.”

As mentioned, Everton have been praised for their “classy” response to Chelsea fans’ chant which was condemned by Jamie Carragher…

@GroundhogRedman: Well done and it’s great to see clubs coming together on this matter. @ChelseaFC it’s about time you educated your fan base. Sing about football not poverty.

@joextweet: Such a class act my club. Love how the city comes together to help those in need 💙❤️

@KevMacBluenose: Good work, Blues.

@DW2LFC: Absolutely brilliant this.

@Callumefc: If only the @premierleague stamped down as hard on this chant as others…

@JAMES77458423: All Scousers are proud of you today❤️💙👏

@PED7: Superb! Mention it every time someone sings it. Sick of these horrible, horrible pricks, thinking it’s funny and our own who think it’s just bantz!

@evertonian6: If you are going to sing “Feed The Scousers” next time you come to Goodison, at least bring some donations along for @SFoodbanks and support the great work they do

@Jess_1878: foodbanks nationwide do great work and support those in need brilliantly. nobody in poverty should face ridicule. about time everyone legs the “sign on” and “feed the scousers”. less than a minute it took chelsea to sing it today, never has been funny and never will be.

@chlcrk: This is a classy response by Everton. Frankly it’s a deflating one that they have to. Chants like “Feed the Scousers” feel like outdated classist relics from the 80s

@clynch_abi: I fucking love my club 💙🫡

@DaveRyan1970: @ChelseaFC educate your thick so called fans 👍👏

@LFCjparny: Fair play 👏🏼

@Barcajim3: Shittest chant going this and even worse when it is fans from cities and towns that aren’t exactly fucking utopias themselves

@__griffin_: This kind of thing is why I never want the Ev to go down. All my experiences with actual blues have been incredibly sound.

@the80sdave: One of the most obscene thing about these chants is they sang by people to people who arent effected by food hunger. Yet many of the players who they cheer come from precisely this sort of background.

@BlueDino38: Keep singing it, I say…their teams keep feeding us 3 points #UTFT 💙💙💙
