Everton fans take over TNT Sports broadcast in protest with a message to the Premier League

Everton fans take over TNT Sports broadcast in protest with a message to the Premier League before and during their game against Tottenham.

During the Saturday lunchtime clash between Everton and Tottenham, the home fans stood next to the pundits, holding flyers to express their dissatisfaction with the Premier League’s treatment of their club.

Thousands of angry supporters made their feelings clear at Goodison Park, as prior to the game getting underway, a group of Everton fans held up cards that read, ‘You don’t know what you’re doing’, with the Premier League logo on it.

Fan group ‘The 1878s’ distributed flyers around the stadium, reflecting the fans’ discontent with the league’s management, particularly in light of a potential second points deduction for the club.

Everton has already been given a 10-point deduction for breaching spending rules, which is the most severe penalty ever imposed in the top flight.

The lack of a comprehensive explanation led to even more anger among Everton supporters and the wider football community.

The club has since appealed the sanction, but now faces the threat of being given another points deduction for an alleged second rule violation.

The Premier League’s integrity has been called into question, and it has faced significant criticism for its handling of the situation, especially when compared to the lack of punishment for big-spending clubs like Chelsea and Manchester City.

Everton’s relegation battle has also been intensified by the 10-point deduction, as they have slipped into the bottom three after consecutive goalless draws.

Tottenham were ahead after 4 minutes, Werner slipping in the ball, meeting Udogie, who cut the ball back from the byline for Richarlison to produce a volleyed finish against his old club.

Harrison levelled it on 30 minutes, a superb response from Everton since going behind. McNeil saw his corner touched on by Vicario but Tarkowski was there at the back post heading the ball back into the danger area, Calvert-Lewin looked like he is going to nod home to end a run of 16 games without a goal, but it was in off Harrison. VAR checked after Vicario thought he has been fouled in the build-up by Harrison. Goal stood.

10 minutes later, Maddison held off two Everton players then flicked the ball into the path of Richarlison who sent his past Pickford and into the top corner.

Then right at the end, Everton shared the spoils as Branthwaite nodded home at the far post to send the majority of those inside the ground wild.

Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite speaking to BBC Sport: “It’s a massive result for us.

“Going down early in the game, we showed real team mentality to get back into it.

“We are fighting right until the end in matches and giving ourselves a chance to get something from games.

“A lot of our goals have come from set pieces and it’s something we work on a lot. We have people in every position to score, it fell to me at the back post and I just put it in.

“I think it gives us a positive outlook going into a big game next weekend against Manchester City. We go into every game thinking we can get a result.”

Tottenham manage Ange Postecoglou speaking to BBC Sport: “It’s obviously never going to be an easy game here. You have to deal with a fair bit but most of the time we handled it OK.

“In the second half we had good chances and we needed the third goal to kill the game off. Unfortunately we couldn’t hold out.

“It seems like referees just let things go nowadays and let VAR decide. We’re disappointed to concede so late.

“It seems like there’s a trend with us that referees aren’t prepared to intervene in those kind of situations, we have to accept that.

“The nature of it, conceding so late, doesn’t give us the chance to wrestle it back. We just have to accept that.”

On Richarlison: “He’s been great, Richy. He worked really hard for the team and he is the one who deserves all the credit. There is more to come from him, he’s working really hard to improve.”

Everton manager Sean Dyche speaking to BBC Sport, first on if the late equaliser made the draw feel like three points: “I don’t know about that but I thought the mentality was excellent.

“We know they are a good side. We were very good today, worked to cause trouble for them and I thought we did enough to get something from the game.

“There are a few things we can question about their goals but there is a lot of good that comes out of that performance.”

On the team’s character: “There are so many good things and so much character in the team. It shows even when we’re stretched, young lads coming off the bench, there are good signs about what we are trying to achieve here amid all the adversity and all the noise.

“We still can’t get a penalty – I don’t know what that is about.”

On Everton’s strength at set-pieces: “It’s a valid part of the game, it’s something the staff work hard on. Inevitably it’s about the will and demand to go and score the goal, after quality into the box.”

On Jarrad Branthwaite’s equaliser: “It’s a great header, it’s a brave header. Who knows [with VAR] at the minute. I don’t think anyone can make head nor tails of it. I don’t know how we didn’t get a penalty.

“[Our mentality] has been on show all season. We are stretched at the minute.”

Paul Robinson (Former Tottenham and England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live): “It is nothing more than they deserved. In all honesty, they were the better team today.

“They stuck to their task and they look like they know what they are doing under Sean Dyche.

“Tottenham didn’t like the physicality that Everton brought into the game. Everton’s substitutions worked and you could argue that Spurs’ didn’t.

“Everton kept knocking at the door and they got their rewards.”

Martin Keown (Former England defender on Final Score): “I have to say Everton really played well. In the end they managed to get another vital point to take them out of the bottom three and that could prove to be really important.

“For Tottenham, [their goalkeeper] Guglielmo Vicario is costing them goals from set-pieces. He should have done better [for both Everton goals].”
