Emotional messages sent by players and fans as Ipswich issue statement on Kieron Dyer

Emotional messages are being sent by players and fans as Ipswich Town issue statement on Kieron Dyer, who is departing from the club.

Reports claim that Kieron Dyer resigned from his role as the Tractorboys’ U23s manager in order to undergo a liver transplant having been diagnosed with primary sclerosing cholangitis.

Many may recall the moment 43-year-old suffered from a collapsed lung while taking part in Channel 4’s Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins in October, and underwent subsequent tests in hospital to find the extent of the condition.

Having been living liver problems for a number of years prior to the incident, Dyer said that he was positive that he would overcome what he called a minor setback – and told fans that he would one day be in need of a transplant of the affected organ.

The ex-England and Newcastle midfielder entered his first coaching role with the club back in October of 2020 – and departing with just five games of the current season remaining.

Under his guidance, the youngsters have registered three times the amount of wins than they have suffered losses this season – and he has been praised for his efforts by club chiefs.

CLUB STATEMENT:

Ipswich Town Football Club can confirm that Kieron Dyer has resigned from his position as U23s manager with immediate effect.

Kieron had been in charge of the young Blues since October 2020 and leaves the U23s following a successful season to date.

Town CEO Mark Ashton said: β€œIt has come as a surprise to us that Kieron wishes to stand down from his role as U23s manager.

β€œKieron’s played his part in the development of some of our young players and we thank him for his efforts.

β€œI speak on behalf of everyone at the Club in wishing Kieron all the very best with his future.”

The former footballer also opened up to the SAS show about being sexually abused by a family member as a child.

After taking part in the ‘redman’ challenge where the recruits engage in hand-to-hand combat against their trainers, Dyer really went for it against Jason Fox.

In a chat with trainers after the challenge and after a bit of gentle prodding that something might be bothering him, Dyer talking about how it had an effect on his whole life.

“Obviously, that’s the frustration and anger coming out. I didn’t want to go on about sob stories or accomplishments, I wanted you to judge me from a clean slate, and yeah, I was a victim of sexual abuse when I was a kid.

“I was 11 or 12 from a family member and this monster, well this f**king p**k turned me into a monster, and for the rest of my life the amount of people I’ve hurt because of these personality traits. Like family, dad, mum, wife, you can go on and on. I always had the mindset of do you know what, ’cause I’m a victim, this is the way I am.

“I have just learned today when I come out of here, I’m not a victim of sexual abuse no more, because every time I’m a victim, he wins. Every time I hurt my family and they’re victims, he wins. I’m not a victim no more.”

He added: “The worry I have now is that even though I have this mindset, can I get to the end?

In his interview later, Dyer said he revealed the abuse around eight years ago while in therapy and it just all came out. He admits he’s still working through it all, but he’s “making ground” in his issues.

As mentioned, Emotional messages were sent by players and fans as Ipswich issue statement on Kieron Dyer.

James Norwood has praised Kieron Dyer following his departure after working with the 43-year-old when he was frozen out under former boss Paul Cook and he clearly had huge respect for him.

β€œA man who helped me at my footballing lowest. A man who understood me. A man that helped me, pushed for me. Having experienced him as a coach there’s no one better for a young pro coming through and is a huge loss. KD one of the good ones.”
