Ebbsfleet keeper stuns after netting incredible 95th minute equaliser against York

Ebbsfleet United keeper Mark Cousins stuns after netting an incredible 95th minute equaliser against York City at the weekend.

The 36 year old managed to salvage a point to rescue a point for Ebbsfleet, leaving them within two points of safety in the National League in the relegation places.

York went ahead after just six minutes after Ebbsfleet failed to clear and the loose ball which Lenell John-Lewis got on the end of and hit home.

The hosts were on course to get their first victory in a month and move further from the drop zone, only to concede late on in stoppage time with Cousins scoring with a header from a corner.

Cousins: No, I’ve not scored at all. I think the last time I scored was probably when I was about ten years old and I played out on pitch. So, yeah, it’s been a long time coming.

Interviewer: I’ve also told that I think that’s the first time a goalkeeper’s ever scored for Ebbsfleet as well. So you set another record there.

Cousins: Yeah. Pleased with that. I didn’t realize that but yeah, it’s a good stat to have.

Interviewer: I guess the more important thing is to be emerging with a point because in some ways, had you not got a point, it would have been very undeserved.

Cousins: Yeah, I think it probably a draw was a fair result. I think we didn’t create maybe enough clear cut chances to say we should have won the game. But on the other hand, I don’t think they created any chance at all other than the goal and maybe a half chance header at the start of the second half. So it was disappointing going in at half time, 1-0 and they had one chance to score, they took theirs and we had two and I think the keeper made one save and we missed a target on another. So, yeah, it was disappointing going in at half time, 1-0 and I feel pretty over. Yeah, over the course of 90 minutes we definitely deserve to get a point. I think especially today, it was hard for the front players like York defended very well. They got men behind the ball and made it hard for us to really break them down and get any really good clear cut chances, especially in the second half. And I think this year, this season, I think overall we probably haven’t created enough good goal scoring opportunities and I think, yeah, that’s what we need to improve on.

Interviewer: Was there a feeling of here we go again as well? So as the time was ticking down, you 1-0 down, had the chances. Do you think another one’s going to slip away from us here?

Cousins: Yeah, I think I had that feeling. To be fair. I think it had been a very disappointing getting back on the coach for a 1-0 defeat when we’ve probably done enough to get a draw. And fortunately in last minute gaffer looks over to me and sends me up and it’s a fantastic delivery by Craig Tanner as well. So, yeah, credit to him as well. I was going to say whose call was it to go?

Interviewer: Would you ordinarily go up in that circumstance?

Cousins: I normally look over to the bench at that time. Sometimes it’s a bit too early, if it’s maybe five minutes to go, but I think on the clock it was one and a half minutes to go, so the gaffer gave me a nod and up I went. And I’ve gone up a couple of times this season, but I thought, yeah, why not just stand on the keeper, be a nuisance? And the delivery was fantastic. And, yeah, straight off my head.

Interviewer: I was going to say, because actually, I did see when you up there, basically, your job seemed to be just block their keeper. You stood right on him, followed him round. So I guess it was almost unexpected when the ball came towards you.

Cousins: Yeah. As a keeper, I definitely know how hard it is to have a player stand on you. And I just stood there in an area. I obviously didn’t foul the keeper. I know how hard it is when you got a player standing right in front of you. So, yeah, I was just trying to be a nuisance and stop him really coming for the ball, but obviously, when I looked up and saw the ball heading towards me, I thought, I’ve got to do something here. And fortunately, it glanced in off my nice, shiny head.

Interviewer: Mark, have you ever scored before?

Interviewer: And now it actually sets you up pretty nicely for Bromley, a club you’re very familiar with as well.

Cousins: Yeah, we’ve got two tough games against them. They’re doing very well this season and, yeah, they’ll be certainly hard to beat and we’ve got to be really up for this game against Bromley and we’ve got to win all our battles all over the pitch to get anything out of that game.

Interviewer: And as you used to play for them as well, will it be kind of extra special to be facing them?

Cousins: Yeah, I’ve got a few former clubs in this league, so, yeah, it’d be nice to see a few familiar faces and go up against them, but for me, it’s just the focus on trying to get three points.

Interviewer: Have you got anything planned for the next couple of days before the Bromley match?

Cousins: Nothing major, just spending home with the family and, yeah, just probably playing football in the lounge with my little boy because he’s football mad at the moment, so just spending time with them in those, he’ll be scoring more goals. Yeah, I’m sure he’s watching today and he always asks me to go up for corners. I don’t think he’s got the gist of the game just yet, but, yeah, hopefully he’ll be watching today and he’ll be buzzing.
