Duncan Ferguson is reportedly in advanced talks to take up a job with a Championship club, leaving Everton to launched his managerial career.
Football Insider understands that the Everton coach is odds-on favourite to takeover at Blackburn Rovers, who saw Tony Mowbray leave Ewood Park following the expiration of his contract.

Everton are expected to accept they are now likely to lose their club legend and long-serving coach with Ferguson serving over a decade with them, as a player over two separate spells and also was interim manager twice, most recently when Rafael Benitez was axed in January.
The BlackburnRovers job would be his first permanent management role for the former striker and often showed how keen he was to stay on when acting as interim.
He has held several positions at senior and academy level, and he is currently assistant manager to Frank Lampard, only just surviving the drop zone.
The Venky’s ownership group elected chose not to renew Mowbray’s contract at the end of the 2021-22 season, and he now leaves, fairly disappointed a new deal couldn’t be agreed but can be proud of what he’s done for them.
Mowbray guided Rovers to promotion from League One in his first full season in charge and leaves them with an 8th place finish, having failed to reach the playoffs last season despite being 3rd in the table at Christmas has prompted a change in direction.
Blackburn are also said to be on the lookout for a director of football to build on the foundations of youth development put in place by Mowbray.
Fan site ‘Goodison News‘ gave their views on this and it seems they are going to be gutted to see him go.
They wrote in blog: “Not good.
“This would be a huge loss to the club.
“Ferguson has been the one constant around the squad for years now, and this exit could really disrupt things before the players return for pre-season in weeks’ time.
“The Goodison Park icon has been the one man who has stepped up into interim roles and basically saved the club on numerous occasions, but it looks as though it has been one too many times now.
“After doing that, Ferguson likely expected to be handed the main job at the club now, but instead, he has been overlooked time and time again.
“It has worked out well, as it could have done with him in charge, with Frank Lampard guiding the club to safety in our most recent Premier League season.
“Blackburn could offer an interesting role though, and the task of getting back to the Premier League after way too many years away at Ewood Park which has seen Tony Mowbray come and go.
“This is one to watch, albeit through our fingers.”

@Shawy_salarfish: I’d be absolutely delighted if Big Dunc took over @blackburnrovers Hugely respected in the game and been at the highest level for decades
@Beth_Brfc: Duncan Ferguson to rovers… No thank you
@MarkWhittle1: The latest talk and building momentum is around Duncan Ferguson getting the #Rovers job. Personally, I really hope this isn’t the case. Definitely better candidates being linked and mentioned.
@Newcast88388415: Big Duncan Ferguson linked with the managers job at Blackburn rovers think it would be a good appointment always did well as a stand in manager at Everton and probably a good time to chance his arm in full time management.
@MattSouthgate1: I really don’t want Duncan Ferguson in charge of Blackburn. I just don’t. I mean why? 🤷🏻♂️ #rovers
@sweetzombiejees: Great move for all concerned. Go Dunc 💙
@ChrisMartin_93: I don’t understand the panic surrounding Duncan Ferguson potentially getting the manager’s job. With his Everton connections, we could potentially get Jarrad Branthwaite back and we might see him get away with kicking an opposing defender in the face again… #Rovers
@mfowell: Great move – well connected. Experienced he should have got the Everton job
@BillEvram: Duncan Ferguson would genuinely get Blackburn promoted if he gets the job. He’s so underrated.
@IamAaronHaw: Nothing agist Duncan Ferguson personally I don’t want him being the next Rovers manager .think he would been ideal for the EFC he knows the club in side out .we need a manager with championship experience & experience of being a promotion winner #NoTODuncanFerguson #ROVERS 🔵⚪️🌹
@Cuerdleyblue: This would be a great move for him, hope it happens.
@KCToffee: That could be the perfect role #BigDunc
@JWalmsley19: Am I the only one that will take Duncan Ferguson, Huddersfield manager was an assistant, look how well it’s gone for him , he’s gotta start somewhere and he will bring passion as he did as caretaker at Everton which he did a great job their in a few games 🤝 #rovers
@CJS24876674: Blackburn will be very lucky to have him. Would be a brilliant appointment
@Brett63126081: I think he would be awesome. He’s got a heart of gold, would connect with the fans, would not accept any bullshit and has been around fantastic coaches all his life. I’d be happy.
@GraemeMcV: Be a good move for him. If he wants Everton job long term will need to prove his worth elsewhere.
@mattyrei1878: This what big dunc needs… a managerial role to get started with the next phase of his career.
@Peterkidd17: Been Duncan’s biggest fan since the 90s. love the bloke. Massive blue and loves the club. As much as I’d hate to see him go, I’d love him to go and succeed somewhere. Bloke bleeds blue and is imprinted in our clubs dna. Good luck dunc
@dean_rover: Our fans are fickle. If it happens, most have written him off before he’s walked through the door. Would anyone have predicted Steve Cooper winning promotion with Forest? Carlos Corberan taking Huddersfield to within one game of a Premier league return? There are more examples.
@JoshHarding123: Think it’s a bit underwhelming this appointment but will back him all the same
@PeteDog13: What a fucking shambles if this is true
@JamesWilco82: See our fans are already slating a potential manager before hes announced and had the chance to prove himself.
@Seanwanderers1: Sacked before Christmas
@jeverett10: Think I can confidently say there’s not one rovers fan that wants this
@UpperGwladysBlu: Thats a strange attitude. He’s an excellent coach who gets no credit because of his image as a player from 16 years ago. Calvert-Lewin credits him as the main influence in improving him & getting him in the England squad. Deserves a chance as a manager. You shouldve kept Mowbray.
