Dermot Gallagher speaks on controversial decisions in Wolves v Leeds as footage goes viral

Dermot Gallagher speaks on controversial decisions in Wolves v Leeds as new footage goes viral since the final whistle blew.

Leeds moved out of the Premier League relegation zone thanks to a thrilling 4-2 win against Wolves at Molineux.

Jack Harrison put Javi Gracia’s side ahead after six minutes and when Luke Ayling and substitute Rasmus Kristensen – 23 seconds after coming on – extended the lead in the second half, the points looked to be secure.

But a Wolves comeback followed with a stunning goal from Jonny and a deflected effort from Matheus Cunha putting the game back in the balance. Jonny’s subsequent red card halted the home side’s momentum and Rodrigo’s goal finally sealed it.

Ex-Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher looked into and gave his verdict on various flashpoints from the weekend’s action.

On Wolves defender Jonny being handed a red card in the 4-2 loss to Leeds after referee Michael Salisbury was sent to the monitor.

DERMOT’S VERDICT: “It’s a good intervention from VAR”

DERMOT SAYS: “This is similar to the Casemiro red card the other week against Southampton where the player goes over the top of the ball and plants his studs into his shin.

“For me, it is a red card for Jonny and a good intervention to send the referee to the monitor. “

On Wolves were unhappy in the second half with Adama Traore being awarded a free-kick in the build-up to Leeds’ fourth goal.

DERMOT’S VERDICT: “I think it is a foul and the referee should give it.”

DERMOT SAYS: “VAR intervenes correctly, and he’s sent to the screen. When I was watching it live I thought it was an opportunity for the referee to reverse his decision.

“He chose not to which is his prerogative, but I think a foul would have been a more acceptable decision.”

Here’s what supporters said as Dermot Gallagher speaks on controversial decisions in Wolves v Leeds as footage goes viral…

ON THE SHIRT TUG ON TRAORE:

@WinterburnSimon: No. The ref didn’t give any of these fouls all match, was largely free flowing. Ref had a decent game

@25hpork: As much as I feel like it was a soft foul, it was a foul… Saying that though, Traore just stopping is absolutely pathetic. You get taught that as a kid to play ‘til the whistle yet a PL footballer stopped playing just like that. 🫰🏻

@baz2224: It’s a foul in today’s climate, but refs like to pick and choose when they apply rules, and that can infuriate some

@Redsmail: Not enough. Needed to be more professional and play on.

@Kingwolf84: Whilst there was a foul the players should play to the whistle. As a coach we tell the players to play to the whistle so that they are not caught out in situations like this. The Ref’s decision is poor but the players shouldn’t stop working for the ball.

@thombo1987: He stopped won the ball back then lost it again & sulked & just couldn’t be fucking arsed using his pace to win the ball back. If that’s a foul the game Is well and truly fucked.

@Robbie_T7: It wasn’t enough of a foul at all…… If that was a Leeds player that just stopped playing because they wanted a foul and you scored, our fans would be hammering him and rightly so. Traore thought stopping would get him the foul, the ref was bang on to say it wasn’t enough

@tobtipp: Wolves fans new found sense of self-entitlement & indignation is bizarre. Traore acting like Fernandes, playing & reffing the game. Dawson lucky not to get a red & Leeds had a decent shout for a penalty. There’s a team in Manchester that might be a better fit for you… #crywolf

@Lufc11P: Obviously not complaining, but I would like to understand the refs reasoning for not ruling this out. Is it because Traore stops before Roca pulls his shirt? Looks like he caught his ankle a little too, but not enough to warrant Traore not playing on? #LUFC

@SweetLeftFootFM: How this wasn’t given as a foul by the referee and then not overturned after going to VAR is baffling 😂

ON THE REFEREE/OFFICIALS:

@LukeMH92: This league is unbelievable the officials are costing us every single week 🤬 #wwfc

@JonnyQ88: Just hope the lino is okay. You just don’t want to see that type of violence in the modern game. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Nunes get a 6+ game ban for that. Sickening.

@livef0rever_d: This is beyond a joke, a clear agenda against Wolves by officials #wwfc @FA_PGMOL

@connorlinsdell_: Have Paul Tierney and Michael Salisbury been removed from Premier League refereeing duties yet? Referees cannot keep getting away with this without any punishment. It’s happening all the time now and they don’t explain their decision! @FA_PGMOL #NUFC, #WWFC.

@VinnyP_MOT: #wwfc are not doing themselves any favours with all these red cards. If they continue to show such poor discipline, the officials will crack down on them even more. Just like they did with Marsch at #lufc

@jtcas6: Just call them out for what they are… corrupt 🤷‍♂️ we’re even getting red cards for players being walked into now 🤣🙈 wonder what they’ll go for next game… a red in the warm up maybe

@wv_1877: The officiating in the Premier League is a disgrace every week it’s the same old bullshit decisions absolute joke!! #wwfc

@bromWWFC: The league want us out of it, and we will be. What can you do if the officials have the power to constantly shaft you like this??!! Doomed. #wwfc

ON THE HIGHLIGHTS COMPILATION VIDEO

@stozza1979: Amazing how the commentary were so easy to say that the pulling and holding of Bamford was ok but a little tug on baby oil’s shirt was a foul 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂🤦‍♂️

@pinheadhobbs: Hahaha that ‘Noooooooo’ when the Rodrigo goal is given 🤣🤣🤣🤣 brilliant…

@LUSCarborough: These two have been like this all season. They don’t even disguise their bias. It’s so transparent it’s quite comical when they try to justify why certain decisions should go against us. Yesterday “Jonny didn’t mean it, he’s not that sort of player.” 🙄 FFS.

@robroberts32836: Co commentator was totally biased, one of the most biased I have ever heard!

@AndreaOReilly12: So glad I didn’t have to listen to that commentary although the one I watched was 2 lads waffling in Spanish so for all I know they could’ve been saying the exact same thing 😂

@CraigLights: You’d think this was on Wolves TV, not an international broadcast 😂

@RCPhoto2023: hat’s actually disgraceful @7777dp you actually should be embarrassed. Did you have your Forest hat on by any chance? What did you think on the shirt pull of Bamford that should have led to OUR penalty if Rodrigo’s should have been chalked off? 😂😂

@trig62: Unbelievable he’s banging on about the 50/50 penalty decision whilst Luke Ayling is checking to see if his shin bone is still in one piece.

@Jeffers0846: By eck if Wolves think they’re hard done to, think about Leeds who are subject to this refereeing (see foul on Harrison and many others) and this level of commentary week in week out. Unconscious Bias its called. #DirtyLeeds #WeAllHateLeeds

@amo_a_los_Leeds: All I heard through this was “should of had a penalty “ the smallest tug of the shirt the 15 stone Traore definitely put him off balance and Rodrigo goal should of been disallowed 🤣🤣🤣 ffs. #lufc #wwfc

@nastylufc: I’m going out on a limb here a bit but I reckon the commentators think Wolves should have had a penalty. #lufc #wwfc

@SporcoLeeds: Bravo for putting this together, absolutely the most cringeworthy commentary from an allegedly unbiased duo, disgraceful and hilarious #LUFC

@lufcgrace: To this very minute, you know they have mentioned the penalty incidents another 605.8 times.

@sarcher59425351: Absolute class – almost threw the TV out the window listening to this idiot yesterday ….. apparently he’s neutral btw……!

@samjackson23: Surely they’re embarrassed by this? They sound so desperate.

@C1919W: It was awful over the course of the game, but pathetic hearing it all stitched together. Damning evidence that @tonyjonescomm & @7777dp need to find new careers, because they clearly aren’t cut out for the role of an impartial journalist! Embarrassed for the pair of them. #LUFC
