WREXHAM v WEST BROM

Simeon: Wrexham of course, that late defeat at Southampton on opening Saturday. West Brom off to a winning start under Ryan Mason. They beat Blackburn 1-0, which is all you really want from an opening game, isn’t it? But yeah, Wrexham, bit of Phil Parkinson bemoaning differences in budgets, which was gloriously ironic in his post-match press conference, considering Wrexham’s rise, we don’t begrudge anyone doing what they need to do to get to the championship. It’s great to have Wrexham in the Championship, isn’t it, Prutts?

David: Yeah, completely. I think you’re right. The cynic would say, if Parky is saying that, then there’ll be many a team in League One going hang on. But they had chances to kill the game off. Southampton, I thought, knocked on the door for a long period of that game. Was it 22, 23 shots on target or at least attempts at goal? A huge Gavin Bazunu save just before the equaliser went in. When you’ve got the ability of a Ryan Manning to get off the bench and whip it in the top corner, then you’ve got half a chance. But no, I Wrexham were great, really, really good. Southampton needed that first win since February. It shows how big the job is that Will’s got on his plate and the expectation that they will go back up at the first time of Wrexham remains to be seen. I mean, there’s only 45 games left.

Simeon: And we’re talking about Wrexham versus West Brom, Southampton later.

David: Yeah, but I mean, in the sense of the context of what that game was, the Wrexham side of it, they came out smelling of roses, yes, Phil was very frustrated at the end, but another day they’re coming away from St Mary’s Hill three points. So well done to them. But yeah, we’ve got to go again and West Brom under Ryan. I’m intrigued to see what he does. Good coach, very highly thought of coach at Tottenham Hotspur. And now he’s out on his own and I’ve spent time with him working on games and he’s been terrific company and I wish him all the very, very best.

Simeon: He’s not even the youngest manager in the Championship. It’s scary. We really are in the future. This will be the first league meeting ever between these two sides.

David: Will it be weighing on the players’ minds? Is that the next…

Simeon: Yeah, quite possibly. They have met once in the FA Cup. That was in January 1930. Can you tell me the score?

David: It was Wrexham 2 West Brom 1.

Simeon: It was 1-0. So Wrexham versus West Brom at the Racecourse Ground. What’s the score going to be on Saturday.

David Prutton’s score prediction: 2-1 Wrexham

DERBY v COVENTRY

Simeon: Derby beaten late at Stoke on Saturday and Coventry drew 0-0 at home with Hull City on opening day. Clearly not the ideal result for either Derby,, and Coventry a bit underwhelming at home against an unfancied Hull City, shall we say.

David: Yeah, but they had more of the ball, they had more attempts than target, they were just unlucky. That’s a fact.

Simeon: I thought you were just having a dig at Frank Lampard from their two legs against Sunderland.

David: No, no, I love them to bits. That was a genuine fact.

Simeon: I mean that seemed to like, for one that would have relied you to remember something happened three months ago and two it would have…

David: Yeah, no chance.

Simeon: …shown a level of intelligence that you’ve yet to show in the 11 years I’ve known you.

David: It’s been 11 years, God.

Simeon: So Coventry we say were unlucky, Derby County warming up under Eustace?

David: Well, after the heroics of last season.

Simeon: That was a long time ago, I forgot what happened. Did they stay up?

David: Wow, you’re just dismissing everything out of hand. So one team got to the played semi-finals, did the one, just survived and was wonderful.

Simeon: Was a long time ago.

David: It was a long time ago, but two managers have got a lot of time for, and then two big teams in this championship pond, isn’t it? So I’m intrigued about this one. Given what we’ve seen from both of them and given what this opening weekend has thrown forward into the second weekend, which we are inevitably talking about as time passes. Yeah, that’s not took about three months ago. mean, Coventry against Hull, like I said, from what you saw and the highlights and the statistics, was a Coventry, probably performance that should have garnered all three points, but it didn’t. But we’re looking at Frank now and saying, well, if you got to the play of semi-finals, what can you do after this? So it’s an intriguing one with two very, very ambitious young managers.

Simeon: Coventry have won just one of the lost 21 away league games against Derby County, and that came in October 2003.

David Prutton’s score prediction: 2-2 draw

PORTSMOUTH v NORWICH

Simeon: Portsmouth started well at Oxford with a 1-0 win. Norwich not so well under Liam Manning in his first game in charge as they lost 2-1 at home to Millwall. Portsmouth, great start for them considering.

David: The only club with the same manager at the start of last season as this not involved in promotion and relegation. In the Championship, John Mousinho. Ridiculous.

Simeon: Not the best start for Norwich and Liam Manning.

David: Well no, obviously there’s a remit, there’s a work in progress. I thought he did a tremendous job with Bristol City. I don’t know, just something about the names involved really fit to me, Liam and Norwich City. Keeping one of the best players, obviously high priority. And the expectation should be of a team that was just treading water last season to be at least in the top six. So as you say, work to do. But it’s an early indicator of what both these teams want to be. I mean, like I said, Mousinho, so much time for what John’s done at Pompey and the way they ended last season and what Liam did with Bristol City was fantastic. So, no, no, it’s a really season good young managers in a division that hopefully promotes good young managers.

Simeon: Portsmouth, important for them to get an early win after they started so slowly last season. But yeah, off the mark straight away this time around, which they very much needed, I’d say. Norwich are unbeaten across the last three away league games against Portsmouth and could remain four unbeaten for the first time in the Football League.

David Prutton’s score prediction: Portsmouth 2-1 win

IPSWICH v SOUTHAMPTON

Simeon: Ipswich nicked that point at Birmingham on opening night, it was the nickiest of nicks. Well, Southampton might have had the nickiest of nicks actually with how they beat Wrexham, they were at St Mary’s last week, weren’t they? And now they’re at Portman Road. Big game, big, big game between two teams who are very much targeting an immediate return to the Premier League and this is a good chance to lay down a marker.

David: Do you mean former Premier League teams? No, you’re right. The Ipswich side that got a pointer, Birmingham was somewhat lucky I thought. I did think the decision was correct. But I did think it was a penalty because if you have your hands up in the air and it hits your hand, that’s by definition the laws of the game, handball. And Southampton left it very, very late. They’ve got strength and depth off the bench. We can call it a tactical masterclass, but basically what happened was you put all your strikers up top and the big people from the defence and you pump it forward and hopefully you get a chance to score, which they did. So this one is a good early season because Kieran is under pressure to get them back up. Will has been brought in to get them back up. So I think tactically, got a lot of time for these two. Spent a lot time with Kieran. Chatted to him season before last. Completely blanked me in the Premier League.

Simeon: It’s always the way it’s now. I remember in the Championship I interviewed Enzo Maresca for a few times and he was so pally and then I saw him at a Chelsea game when they were in the Premier League and it was like I was dead to him. It was very, very upsetting.

David: He actually told me to tell you to never approach him at a Chelsea game ever again.

Simeon: Not the first manager to have passed on that message to me via you. Ipswich have won just two of the last nine league games against Southampton, but they did the double over the Saints the last time these two sides featured in the championship in 23-24.

David Prutton’s score prediction 2-2 draw

BLACKBURN v BIRMINGHAM

Simeon: Blackburn lost 1-0 West Brom. Birmingham with that 1-1 draw with Ipswich, we’ve already talked about. What’s the score going to be at Ewood Park.

David Prutton’s score prediction: 1-1 draw

BRISTOL CITY v CHARLTON

Simeon: Bristol City will win that one at Sheffield United on Saturday evening, whilst Charlton got a very, very late win against Watford 1-0, bringing on some mighty Nathan Jones celebrations, which are always lovely to see. What’s the score going to be at Ashton Gate?

David Prutton’s score prediction: I’m going to go Bristol City 2-1 win

MILLWALL v MIDDLESBROUGH

Simeon: Millwall won 2-1 at Norwich. Middlesbrough beats Swansea 1-0. So both sides looking to preserve their 100 % start at the Den.

David Prutton’s score prediction: 1-1 draw

PRESTON v LEICESTER

Simeon: Preston drew 1-1 at QPR. Leicester beat Sheffield Wednesday 2-1. What’s the score then to be at Deepdale?

David Prutton’s score prediction: Leicester 2-1 win

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY v STOKE

Simeon: Sheffield Wednesday lost 2-1 at Leicester. Stoke beat Derby 3-1. What’s the score going to be at Hillsborough? For what should be a feisty occasion in their first home game of the season after everything that’s happened.

David Prutton’s score prediction: 2-2 draw

SWANSEA v SHEFFIELD UNITED

Simeon: Swansea lost 1-0 at Middlesbrough on opening day. Sheffield United need to bounce back from that galling mauling by Bristol City. What’s the score going to be at the swansea.com?

David Prutton’s score prediction: I think Swansea going to win that 2-1.

Simeon: Putting the pressure on Rupert Salas. it too early for that? I don’t think it is.

WATFORD v QPR

Simeon: Watford lost 1-0 at Charlton on opening day, QPR drew 1-1 at home with press and what’s the score going to be at the Vicarage Road?

David Prutton’s score prediction: Watford 1-0 win.

HULL v OXFORD

Simeon: Hull, obviously you’ve got that 0-0 draw. Conventry talked about earlier, Oxford started the season with a 1-0 defeat at home to Portsmouth. What’s score going to be at the MKM Stadium?

David Prutton’s score prediction: Hull 1-0 win
