David Cotterill divides reaction on social media as his tweet on sex offenders gets over 40,000 likes within 24 hours of posting.
The former Premier League and EFL footballer, who is now a mental health consultant and public speaker, took to his personal Twitter account to vent his frustration when it comes to proof of a vaccination.
He issued a tweet at 1:12pm on Monday the 20th of December 2021, as new emerged that Prime Minister Boris Johnson was holding a Cabinet meeting at 2pm of the same day.
@cotterill_david wrote: “There are over 850,000 registered sex offenders in the UK and they don’t have to carry a card because it violates their privacy!!
“But we have to show proof of a vaccination to get into cinemas or restaurants
“Come on 😂🤣”

Cotterill also posted via Twitter: “Mental health is more deadly to our children today than Omicron. The fear that people who are running our countries and the media platforms are causing so many problems to people it’s insane. Turn the news off and live being with family and loved ones.“
“Both the vaccinated and unvaccinated can catch and spread the virus almost equally! Keeping the unvaccinated out of public places but we all spread it! So turns out we are all in this together! The unvaccinated are not a threat to society.. But they are a threat to authority.”
The government needs to “reserve the possibility” of bringing in new Coronavirus rules in England as cases of the Omicron variant surge this festive period, the prime minister said on Tuesday.
Boris Johnson didn’t announce any new measures but added that ministers were “looking at all kinds of things”.
He claims the data was being reviewed “hour by hour” and there were still “some things that we need to be clearer about before we decide to go further”.
Then urged people to exercise caution in light of a further 91,743 Covid cases being reported across the UK on Monday, the second highest daily total on record.
The PM’s scientific advisers say new restrictions may be required very soon and have suggested reducing the size of groups that can meet and closing venues where there is a high risk of transmission.
However Boris faces opposition to new restrictions from within his party with around 100 Tory MPs voting against the government’s decision to bring in Covid passes last week, while Brexit minister Lord Frost resigned from government at the weekend over “coercive measures” to tackle Covid.
Speaking after a two-hour cabinet meeting, Mr Johnson said the arguments for taking action were “very, very finely balanced”.
He added: “Unfortunately I must say to people that we will have to reserve the possibility of taking further action to protect the public, to protect public health, to protect our NHS. And we won’t hesitate to take that action.”
Asked about the prospect of further restrictions before or after Christmas, Mr Johnson said: “We are looking at all kinds of things to keep Omicron under control and we will rule nothing out.
“But at the moment, what I think we want people to focus on is exercising caution – so ventilation, masks in the appropriate places, all the usual stuff about washing hands, but remember how contagious Omicron really is.”
The prime minister said “what really matters is for everybody to get vaccinated and get boosted”.
He also acknowledged the impact that recent behavioural changes by some people, such as cancelling bookings, were having on businesses in the hospitality sector, saying the economic impacts would be kept “under constant review”.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan urged the government to provide “immediate support” to businesses in the hospitality, retail and culture sector to prevent jobs being lost, saying in a tweet that “time is running out”.
From the 15th of December, fans will need to show proof of double vaccination or a negative lateral flow test result in order to attend matches with the rules part of government’s ‘plan B’ to combat the Omicron variant.
To attend a Premier League game, you must now either show proof of double vaccination via the NHS Covid app, or proof of a negative lateral flow test taken inside the previous 48 hours.
The rules are intended to “[help] keep these events and venues open at full capacity while giving everyone who attends them confidence that those around them have done the responsible thing to minimise risk to others,” said the Prime Minister.
Back to David Cotterill now and as mentioned, he divides reaction as his tweet on sex offenders gets over 40,000 likes…
@_alexoates: If you showed me this tweet without the @ I would’ve said David Cotterill
@BlueKnight1878: Absolutely right. It’s madness. Especially when people can catch and pass on covid after being double vaxxed. And when does this stop? 4th 5th jab? Are double vaxxed unvaxxed if they refuse booster? It’s all crazy.
@princeybcfc: Use to have a lot of time for cotts with what hes overcome but he has let himself down bigtime with his views on that subject
@nathancarty112: Top player for us shame he’s behaviour is ruining it he needs to stop been a div
@9_Hendo: I see David Cotterill’s timeline has been picked up on by fans this evening. Bloke’s a danger. This is the same guy who’s also tweeted about 850k sex offenders on the street (when its c.95k) and advocated for police to have guns to stop pitch invaders. Brains of a rocking horse
@jimmy_viz: The figures are wrong and of course the clue is in the word ‘registered’. Stick to kicking a ball round.
@hollowsounds_: When it comes to ex-blues players be more like Jude and less like David Cotterill
@JordsLFC96: David Cotterill. What a wet wipe. Mans gone mental.
@Robsmit78991021: Omg if your figures are correct that’s appalling but the vaccine is the responsible thing to do, you were a great footballer and a great advocate for mental well-being but this objection to the vaccine is crazy
@btrsofficial: No card, but legal obligation to update police of your status every year, possible electronic tagging, social activity bans and multiple agencies consulted. Not the same, David and dangerous to suggest otherwise.
@Fletch19852:
*In your opinion*
He’s quite right to have and voice his opinion isn’t he?
@kopchris88: Looks like heading a football is more dangerous than we thought
@AndyMc_25: The real pandemic is the surge in ex footballers constantly spreading misinformation & thinking they’re actually making a difference instead looking like they have mince for brains.
@AJacko_: If you refuse to get vaccinated because it ‘violates your privacy’, you’re an idiot
@TomRichards1990: David Cotterill is the first footballer I have ever muted. Feel like his account is causing harm. Perpetuating myths, reporting incorrect information as facts & making unrelated links. For balance, Jude Bellingham, half of his age being a true role model yesterday #BCFC
@KELSEARAVENHILL: Good morning to everyone except David Cotterill, hope he has a shit day x
Always known for honesty, eh Dave? https://t.co/I1yTTaeLuE pic.twitter.com/J7RMRwgE7H
