Daily Mail cause a stir with video of England players emotional after Euros Final defeat

The Daily Mail cause a stir with an emotional video of England players shedding tears after the 2024 Euros Final defeat to Spain.

Mikel Oyarzabal’s 86th-minute goal won it for Spain after substitute Cole Palmer briefly gave England so hope when he cancelled out Nico Williams’ opener.

The result now means that England’s wait for a trophy will extend to 60 years by the 2026 World Cup, and questions remain on Gareth Southgate’s future.

It’s the caption that the Daily Mail posted after the game which has got people talking, writing: “The England players looked deflated after their #Euro2024 Final defeat… 😔

“Not a smile to be seen. 💔”

The clip has gone on to get nearly 2 million views, but there has been a lot of reaction that Daily Mail wouldn’t have been expecting upon realising the clip to social media, with thousands of fans replying to them.

The video shows each players post-match, Bellingham visibly in tears with all the other players not in the right frame of mind to talk having just lost the game.

England captain Harry Kane on BBC Sport: “We made it clear we love the manager, but that’s his decision [whether he wants to stay on]. Now’s not the time to talk about it. It’s down to him, he’ll go away and think about it. But we’re all just hurting.

“Losing in a final is as tough as it gets. We did really well to get back into the game and get level, but we couldn’t quite use the momentum to push on. We couldn’t quite keep the ball and got punished. It’s as painful as it can be in a football match.

“We didn’t keep the same intensity, keep the ball well enough. It’s the last stage of the tournament, there’s a lot of tired legs and mentality. It’s down to big moments, we had one at the end which they cleared off the line, but it’s really disappointing.

“It’s been a tough tournament. We’ve had to show a lot of resilience, me personally and the team. It’s been a difficult ride and we’ve done extremely well to get here. But ultimately we’re going to be judged on this game.

“We wanted to do it so badly for ourselves and the fans, and everyone who’s believed in us the whole way. Right now, it’s just huge disappointment.”

England captain Harry Kane, speaking to ITV: “It’s hard to put into words how we’re all feeling right now. Tough game. We did well to get back into the game and struggled to build on that. To concede late on is really tough to take.

“We’ve been coming from behind all tournament, we’ve got it in the locker. We didn’t take the next step and win it.

“In the first half, we struggled. We couldn’t keep the ball. Second half was better and we got the goal. We got caught with a cross and that’s the final.

“It’s an opportunity missed. These finals aren’t easy to get to. You have to take it when it comes and we haven’t done it again. It’s extremely painful and it’ll hurt for a long time.

“Gareth will go away and take time to decide. We wanted to win it for him.”

England’s Ollie Watkins, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: “I have had an unbelievable seven weeks, I couldn’t speak any higher of the coaching staff, the backroom staff and all the players.

“Right now, me and all the boys are hurting. It is important to use this time to spend with our families.”

Watkins on Gareth Southgate: “He brings a togetherness for a start.

“This group of lads are such a tight knit group. Since he has come in he has been the most successful England manager there is – he deserves a lot more praise than what he gets.

“I would have loved to win as he deserves it more than anyone.”

More from Harry Kane, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: “Another tough moment for the team and for me personally. A tough tournament physically and mentally. You get so close to the highest of the highs, the pinnacle of our careers, now everyone is at the lowest of the lows. We haven’t found a way to win that trophy and it is going to hurt for a long time.”

England captain Harry Kane, speaking to BBC, about Gareth Southgate’s future: “We made it clear we love the manager. That’s his decision and now is not the time to talk about that. Right now, we are all just hurting.”

England’s Cole Palmer, speaking to ITV: “Spain have been brilliant all tournament, everyone has seen what they can do so congratulations from them.

“We hoped to but we didn’t do that. I’m gutted.

“We got to another final, there’s positives to take but everyone wanted to go one step further and we didn’t.

“Gareth’s been amazing for the group. We’ve got to back-to-back finals so it’s been good.”

England defender Luke Shaw speaking to BBC Sport’s Alex Howell: “Absolutely devastated. Not much else I can say. We really believed we could do it but it wasn’t meant to be.

“He [Gareth Southgate] is extremely proud of the team and what we have achieved as a group but of course, there isn’t much else he could say. Everyone is truly gutted.

“I think we had massive belief but the fans deserved it. I just want to thank them for their support and can only apologise to them.”

Jordan Pickford said: “He [Southgate] just mentioned that was the 14th match we have had in the Euros and the first match we have lost in normal time. We have been on a hell of a journey and we are devastated tonight – there is nothing more to say.”

Harry Kane posted a message on Twitter: “Heartbroken we couldn’t achieve what we worked so hard to. It was a long, tough tournament and I’m so proud of the boys and staff for getting to the final.

“Ultimately, we fell short of our target and will have to live with that but as we always do we will pick ourselves up, dust ourselves down and be ready to fight again in an England shirt.

“Thank you to all the fans that believed in us and supported us to the very end!”

Jude Bellingham, who assisted Cole Palmer for the equaliser, spoke to the press after the game: “I think we sacrificed a lot throughout the last weeks. It’s so tough these days, with the crazy schedules and then coming together for the end of the season, for one last tournament, it’s difficult on the body.

“Mentally, physically, you’re exhausted but for our country we wanted to give everything and then to lose in that way is really cruel.

“We all wanted nothing more than to make history and to make the people of England proud and we haven’t managed to do it, we didn’t quite deliver.

“There’s reasons for that and I’m sure as a team and going forward, we’ll analyse it but I think it’s a young group still.

“It’s really disappointing because at some point we do have to deliver, but there are experiences and there’s things we can take from this tournament going forward.

“I suppose if you look at everything negatively, nothing will ever change. So it’s important we pick the positives and the negatives together and find a way to one day get England over the line.”

As mentioned, the Daily Mail cause a stir with a video of England players emotional after the Euros Final defeat…

@RCoat13: They won’t exactly be over the moon will they. Do better journalists

@Degzy12: If they smiled you would report it… England players disgustingly smile after Euro final loss. Nobheads

@alimullaley: What on earth did you expect? They’ve, arguably, just lost the biggest game of their lives! 🙄

@ToffeeMc1878: They’d get pelters if they were caught even giving a hint of a smile, also wrongfully. You can’t win with the press.

@Manny_yrn1: How are they supposed to look?

@fish_blues: Imagine the mails headlines if they date crack a smile.

@LeanneSpurs: They’re not exactly gonna be jumping for joy, are they?

@Bairdric1: BREAKING: England players refuse to smile after losing major trophy…

@neolithicobject: Damn I wonder why

@DBW77: To be fair to them what do you expect?

@JakeAGriff: What do expect? Get out their faces. This is almost certainly the worst night of their careers. Give them a break, not a camera in their face.

@Galafoxes: Did a “journalist” seriously write this? What did you expect? Smiles laughs and champagne? Muppet

@StewartsGloves: I’d be fucking beaming if I’d just lost the euro final.

@JK_dcfc: Crazy that I thought they’d all be beaming

@porlmurf: What do you expect, Moonwalking out of the stadium?

@MichaelConnor27: What shit journalism, smile and they’d be all over the news, still tryna grab them for a quick interview when they’re probably at the lowest point in their career.

@cal_bray: Can’t believe it, expected fucking star jumps and knee slides

@FingalTottenham: What sort of caption is this?!?!? 🤣😂🤣

@KanKeano_THFC: How the fuck did you expect them to react?

@MattFothers: Proper shitty post this… what do you expect them all to be buzzing ? 😴
