Daniel Podence punches a Como 1907 player after alleged racism towards Hwang Hee-chan, with Wolves to submit a formal complaint to UEFA.
The training game, which was played out in Spain, was stopped with Podence given a straight red card for throwing a punch at the defender in the aftermath.
It took place midway through the second half, with Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Gary O’Neil saying he asked Hwang if he wanted to abandon the game, but the 28 year old declined with his side going on to win 1-0.

CLUB STATEMENT:
Unfortunately, midway through the second half Hwang reported that he’d heard a racist remark from a Como player, which led to altercations in the centre circle and, ultimately, a red card for Podence.
Head coach Gary O’Neil says Hee Chan Hwang has the full support of the Wolves group, after he reported a racist remark in Monday’s pre-season match with Como 1907.
Midway through the second half the attacker reported the incident, which led to angry reactions of his teammates, resulting in the dismissal of Daniel Podence.
Immediately following the incident, O’Neil spoke to Hwang and offered him the opportunity to abandon the match, however the South Korean was determined to continue and play out the 90 minutes.
O’Neil said: “Channy heard a racist remark which is really disappointing. I spoke to Channy about it, checked whether he wanted to take the team off or come off himself, but he was keen the team carried on and got the work they needed. It’s really disappointing that it happened, that we have to talk about it and that it impacted the game – not ideal and things like that shouldn’t be around.
“He’s really disappointed, of course, and understandably. I’m proud of the fact that he wanted to carry on and put his team first in a difficult moment for him. He knew it was a pre-season trip and he wanted the lads to work and get their minutes, even though he’d suffered something hugely offensive. Channy will be OK, he’ll get our full support and we’ll pick him up in the morning and make sure he’s OK.
“It’s a together group. Of course, there’s ways to handle that and we don’t want to leave ourselves short on the pitch, but it’s a together group. We’ve worked really hard this week, had a good week, had some great moments in the game, but it’s an unfortunate incident we have to deal with and have to discuss when, ideally, we’d be talking about the game. Of course, when an incident like that happens in a game, it’s the first thing we discuss.”
Racism or discrimination in any form is completely unacceptable and should never be left unchallenged, and Wolves will be submitting a formal complaint to UEFA regarding the incident.

— Como1907 (@Como_1907) July 16, 2024
COMO STATEMENT:
“Our club does not tolerate racism and condemns all forms of it in the strongest possible way.
“We spoke to the defender in question to understand what was said.
“He has told us the comment he made, to his co defender, was “ignore him, he thinks he’s Jackie Chan”.
“Having spoken to our player at length, we are confident this was in reference to the player’s name, and to the constant references of ‘Channy’ made by his own team-mates on the pitch.
“As far as our club is concerned our player did not say anything in a derogatory manner.
“We are disappointed that the reaction of certain Wolves players has seen the incident blown out of proportion.” – Mirwan Suwarso Official representative of the ownership group
UEFA STATEMENT:
“The fight to eliminate racism, discrimination and intolerance from football is a major priority for our organisation.
“Discriminatory behaviour is not tolerated in UEFA’s competitions. Any such behaviour would fall under Article 14 of the UEFA disciplinary regulations.
“While UEFA will continue its fight to eliminate all forms of discrimination in football, the organisation’s disciplinary bodies can only take action for incidents that take place in UEFA competitions.”
In 2022, Wolves said they were “very disappointed” when Hwang also suffered “discriminatory abuse” from SC Farense fans in a pre-season friendly.

@AsYouWereTamP: Respect to Podence, hope Hwang is okay, disgusting that this still happens in the world at all never mind on a football pitch, though I have to say, given the leanings of Como fans, it’s no surprise that such behaviour comes from that club and its players. #NoToRacism
@RickyMT7: 2024.. this shit just shouldn’t happening, well done to podence for jumping in and sending love to Hwang! 💛
@C7Burton: Sending love to Channy 💛🐺

@JonnyQ88: Fucking well in Podence man. Second time Hwang’s been racially abused in pre season and it’s a fucking joke he has to go through that shit. Shoutout to the team backing him up. #wwfc
@danisawolf: Fair play to Podence (don’t condone violence) but bloke hasn’t been there for a year but still defends his team mates, got no complaints with reaction whatsoever it’s natural.
@FSFootball_: Mature response full of class from Gary O’Neil. The fact that he asked #Heechan if he would like to stop the game after the racist slur was reported is huge. Liked O’Neil re-iterating his full support for Heechan and placing mental health checkups in the forefront.
@danisawolf: Done the right thing Podence, no complaints. Italians renowned for that type of behaviour
@DavidDu26884825: Thats what i like about podence hes a fiery player and sticks up for his team mates thats what weve missed last season no 1 questioning decision
@pedalsingh: Hope Hwang is ok. Not the first time he has had to face this crap. Absolutely disgusting. Well done to his team mates for standing up to it too. 🙏🏽
