It seems the candidates have been revealed as England have a replacement in mind should Gareth Southgate decide to step down.
The Telegraph report that England already have a shortlist in place with Newcastle United’s Eddie Howe ‘near the top’, but there is other names and coaches expected come under consideration and are bound to express an interest in the job.
Southgate said prior to the tournament that he’d consider his future in charge of the Three Lions if they fail to win it.
He said after Sunday night’s defeat by Spain in Berlin: “Now is not the time for me to speak about that. I need to talk to the right people and give myself a bit of time.
“To get to another final… it was a privilege to have the opportunity. But to come up short is hard at the moment.”
But a few days later, he confirmed his decision to step down, saying it is the right time for change.

The Football Association have always said they want him to stay on past his contract which expires in December.
But the decision is all down to Gareth Southgate, having been left “devastated” at losing another final.
Those who will be behind appointing a new manager if he goes is FA chief executive Mark Bullingham and technical director John McDermott.
Now reports emerging the day after the final say that Howe will be among the leading candidates, with the likes of Graham Potter, Mauricio Pochettino, Thomas Tuchel and England Under-21 manager Lee Carsley also on the list.
At this stage, Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard are said to be outside contenders.
SKY BET ODDS (15th July)
Graham Potter – 6/5
Eddie Howe – 7/2
Lee Carsley – 5/1
Mauricio Pochettino – 8/1
Thomas Tuchel – 8/1
Jurgen Klopp – 10/1
Frank Lampard – 20/1
Pep Guardiola – 20/1
Michael Carrick – 33/1
Steven Gerrard – 33/1
The FA face a hurdle in tempting in Howe, not only will they have to try and persuade him to leave his position at Newcastle, but to also accept a significant reduction in salary.
Southgate reportedly earns about £5 million annually, which is low for a job as manager in the Premier League, and Howe would have to take a pay cut to take over from him.
Former Brighton and Chelsea boss Graham Potter meanwhile hasn’t been on the touchline of any club for over a year since since being let go, with his coaching experience abroad making him a potentially more attractive and easier option for the FA. He is also said to be interested in taking up the role should it become available after turning down Ajax and hadn’t immediately accepted a return to Brighton.
Bullingham did state that England could even hire a foreign manager for the England men’s team, citing Sarina Wiegman from the Netherlands as the coach of the women’s team.
This could see Pochettino and Tuchel being seriously considered with both also saying they’re keen on being appointed, having ‘strong connections with the squad’.
Lee Carsley is another name said to be highly regarded by the FA, having guided the Under-21s to Euros victory last summer by beating Spain in the final.
They also like that he’s previously worked with a number of senior England players who made their way up through the youth ranks.
This is what fans are saying with candidates revealed as England have a replacement in mind should Gareth Southgate step down…
@ToffeeCardinal: He’d be glad to finally get a big job having only managed small clubs so far
@Capt_Fishpaste: One thing you could say about Howe is he’d get England pressing brilliantly. That’s the single biggest change, tactically, they need to make.
@binaryside: If Southgate resigns then I can see the FA wanting Eddie Howe. Of course I, like most #NUFC fans, won’t want him to leave but #England will be hard to resist. I can then see Pochettino taking over at Newcastle with the connection to Paul Mitchell.
@aide_dews: He’s [Howe] the best English candidate by far! His managerial style and approach is exactly what the England team needs
@Bigkev1346: Here we go. If he’s offered that job, there’s no way he turns it down.
@Duzman11: I’m sure England would love to have Howe, but why would he leave Newcastle at this point in his career?
@Logan14Cameron: I’d absolutely love him [Howe] to be in charge of this generation of talent. However they can piss off i love him
@DavyBaty81: Howe won’t take the England job, if he’d been here 6 years instead of 3 he would but he won’t leave half way through a project
@allman85: Can’t see him [Howe] being interested. He’s a coach who’s happiest on the training pitch developing players. Can’t see international football being his thing
@donmaarko: Keep ya filthy mits off!!! #NUFC
@bensprattjourn
Three points:
1. I don’t think he [Howe] takes it
2. I don’t want him to take it
3. However, I think Newcastle are in the best position they have been to appoint an elite coach
I suppose there’s a fourth: just get it all sorted quickly
@GanRadge: Howe’s not got enough shithousery in him to win a tournament, so this is failed from the off.
@AFCBeef: If we’re determined to win something with an English manager, then Howe would be the first choice. But I personally think England should be going for Pochettino or even Klopp. But I guess some people won’t be able to get over a German or Argentine managing England.
@Im_RobM: International jobs are rarely taken by managers in their prime already managing at a high level. Managers who are winding down after a long career, or managers with a point to prove (Graham Potter?) are usually the way it goes. Confident Eddie Howe won’t be going anywhere #NUFC
@21Milner: I’d be amazed if he [Howe] leaves. Could understand it if we had stagnated or if things had become stale because of his management but I don’t think they have. I’m confident that he stays #NUFC
@LeonH1983: Yes he’s German but go all out for klopp
@COYI_WHU1: Only Englishman i’d take is Eddie howe
@ma33499357: Lee Fucking Carsley. Give me fucking strength.
@mithITFC: I have absolutely zero faith in the FA to make the correct appointment should Southgate go. Potter and Howe don’t interest me in the slightest. We should go all out to bring in an elite level manager who has a track record of winning trophies, regardless of nationality
@CleverClaremont: Tuchel & Poch are the only options.
@lampett_1988: Tuchel is the only foreign coach I’d take, we’d cruise the knockouts with him
@nathjones000: Only Tuchel nobody else
@Charlie_Fry_: Can’t have a German or an Argie managing England. Go all out for Eddie Howe but you just know they’ll go for the next yes man in Graham Potter
@DanCooper9: England job has never been more appealing. Potter my clear preference. A simple but effective system that suits our best players and will be fairly straightforward to implement.
@FmCatenaccio: Graham Potter for me, really rated him at Östersund and Brighton. Chelsea was, and still is a shit show for any manager
@TalkinTactics: I actually think the England national team job is very appealing at the moment. You get to work w/ extremely talented players whilst facing little interference (DoFs/Owners) plus having spare time with the family/to develop & improve yourself. Can test yourself vs the best too
