Current bookies favourites to become Wrexham new boss – club to appoint by end of next week

After Wrexham parted company with first team manager Bryan Hughes last week, we’ve taken an updated look at who are favourites for the job at the Racecourse Ground.

At the time of his departure, they sat in the National League’s bottom four and are winless in eight games. Now they sit outside the drop in 20th after beating Ebbsfleet and losing to Solihull.

A club statement today said: “Wrexham AFC can confirm that the recruitment process to appoint a new first team manager is well underway and we should be able to announce a decision within the next five working days.

“Brian Flynn will continue to manage the first team in the interim, including tomorrows game vs Woking.

“Wrexham AFC are unable to offer any further comments at this time.”

Take a look at who are the top six favourites below and on the next page.

6th) KEVIN NOLAN

Kevin Nolan was recently linked with the managers job at Bolton Wanderers and Yeovil Town, but didn’t get the job.

He was sacked by Notts County in August 2018, and he was reportedly keen to re-join them around 10 months ago. However the club opted for Neal Ardley instead.

The former Bolton, Newcastle, West Ham player took Notts to the League Two playoffs in the 2017/18 season. However, the manager was shown the door after they picked up one point in five league matches, many called the decision to sack him ‘harsh’.

Nolan was also player-manager for Leyton Orient in 2016. His team won three of the four league games in his first full month of management. He was nominated for February’s manager of the month award. On 12 April 2016, with the team two points off the playoffs, Nolan was relieved of his duties as manager, the role given to Andy Hessenthaler.

He was tipped by Plymouth Argyle and promotion winning Bury boss Ryan Lowe to become the new manager, saying he’d be a perfect fit, that he knows the club inside and out but also has a lot of love for them.

Current odds on Paddy Power: 25/1

5th) GRAHAM WESTLEY

Graham Westley was last in charge of Barnet, but only lasted three months after winning 2, drawing 4 and losing 5 matches back in 2018.

The experienced manager has also been at Newport County, Peterborough United, Stevenage, Preston, Kettering (caretaker), Rushden & Diamonds, Farnborough, Enfield and Kingstonian.

HIS HONOURS:

– Farnborough Town
Isthmian League Cup: 2000–01
Isthmian League Premier Division: 2000–01

– Stevenage
FA Trophy: 2008–09; runner-up: 2009–10
Conference Premier: 2009–10
League Two play-offs: 2010–11

Current odds on Paddy Power: 20/1

4th) GARY WADDOCK

He is the current caretaker at Southend United, four months after he left the Shots in May after having his contract terminated by mutual consent.

They were relegated from the National League that season after finishing 21st in the table.

Waddock had taken charge in the summer of 2016 and led the club to consecutive fifth-placed finishes in his first two seasons back at the Hampshire side who had had spells with between 2007 and 2009, winning the Conference title in 2008.

He has also managed Queens Park Rangers, Wycombe Wanderers, Oxford United and Portsmouth (caretaker).

Current odds on Sky Bet: 7/2
