Crystal Palace aim dig at Robin Olsen, booed by fans for ‘ruining’ kids half time penalty shoot-out

Crystal Palace aim a dig at Aston Villa keeper Robin Olsen, who was booed by fans for ‘ruining’ a kids half time penalty shoot-out.

Villa’s substitute goalkeeper, Robin Olsen, was warming up to replace the injured Emi Martinez when he found himself at odds with Crystal Palace’s half-time entertainment plans.

The home side had scheduled a penalty shoot-out for young fans as part of the break, but Olsen, focused on preparing for the second half, refused to vacate the goalmouth despite being asked to move.

This led to the shoot-out being relocated to the other end of the pitch, and the crowd didn’t take kindly to Olsen’s stance, booing him as he entered the game at the start of the second half and continuing their disapproval throughout his time on the pitch.

Birthday boy Ismaila Sarr had put Palace 1-0 up on the 29th minute. The home fans were in good spirits, but half time antics from Olsen led to the keeper being booed.

The Palace announcer can be heard saying: “Lenny, come on over. Sorry. We’re using the goal. I feel like I’m at school. I’m really sorry. This has never happened before.

“Hello? Sorry. We need the goal. No? Can I play with the goal? We’re using the goal. We…

“I’m really sorry. This is the first time it has ever happened. Should we go down the Holmesdale?

“Palace fans, I genuinely don’t know what to say. Right. Kids, let’s let it down the other end because Villa clearly don’t wanna play.”

And that last comment really summed up Villa in the second half, as Palace went on to win the game. Despite Morgan Rogers levelling the scoreline on 52 minutes, Palace hit back hard with Jean-Philippe Mateta (60′) restoring the hosts’ lead, then Ismaila Sarr (71′) and Edward Nketiah (90+1′) finished off in style.

Palace’s 4-1 win sees them up to 12th in the Premier League with 36 points from 27 games, while Villa are 10th with 42 points from 28 games.

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery, speaking to TNT Sports: “We were competing well until the first goal we conceded. Good positioning and we were dominating the match. We have one goal [ruled out].

“The first chance they had, they scored. Then they got some transitioning. Second half we tried to come back, but then we scored, and we were excited and motivated to try to continue controlling the game with our positioning.

“They scored the second goal, and we lost our positioning, we conceded transitions, and they scored two more goals. It was a tough result. We competed well, but it is not enough – we move on.”

On Emiliano Martinez’s injury: “He was feeling some pain. Even yesterday, he trained well, but before the match he felt better and felt confident to play.

“At half-time he told us he was not feeling good. So we decided to change him.”

On other injuries: “We have some players injured, but we will not use this excuse. We have to focus on the Premier League. Now we have two competitions [FA Cup and Champions League to play].”

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “We played fantastic in our gameplan in the first 30 minutes.

“We were dominating and attacking the box. We had one goal [ruled out]. Then we conceded one goal and we progressed being worse.

“The second half we didn’t start very good. We tried to keep the gameplan consistency. They were getting some transitions and getting better than us in the duels.

“We have to accept it, and it is disappointing how we lost today 4-1 but we have to be excited and motivated for Friday in the FA Cup.

“We have some players playing a lot of matches in a few days. We, of course, have to use different players.

“After today, with a loss, it is difficult to try to explain everything. We have to move on and be motivated in the competitions – FA Cup and Champions League and get the balance in the Premier League.”

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “Everybody is happy. Everybody is pleased with the win. Congrats to the players for this great performance. Really pleased today. We had a good first half.

“Momentum of the game can change when you face a team with the quality of Villa. We didn’t allow the momentum changes, and we kept going. We were very aggressive and waited for our chances. We scored fantastic goals, all the credit to the players.”

On Ismaila Sarr: “We don’t have time to celebrate. In four days we face Millwall. Of course, a win, and a goal, and a great performance from him and the team – great birthday for him.”

On form lately: “To be honest, the first time we didn’t speak about winning this game. We talked about what we wanted to do.

“They matched us, but the players know what they have to do, and they did it in a fantastic intensity. We talked about what we want to do and what we need to do. The result is the consequence of a great performance.”

Crystal Palace goalscorer Eddie Nketiah, speaking to Premier League Productions: “Nice to get the win and the first one in the Premier League. Nice to share that moment.

“It was a good performance. First and second half we reacted well. A dominant performance, but we were clinical in the second half.

“It was nice to win at home and put that losing run to bed.

“The mood is buzzing, the music is bouncing and everyone is happy.”

Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta, speaking to TNT Sports: “Perfect night. We stayed patient, we knew the chances were coming and we stuck to the plan.

“I am happy. I work hard and when I play with this player [Adam Wharton] I can score every game.”

Aston Villa forward Morgan Rogers, speaking to TNT Sports: “I thought first half we did pretty well, they scored against the run of play. We did well to get back into the game.

“We probably didn’t stamp our authority on the game, we probably made it too easy for them to get through us. They deserved the win. We were not good enough and, yes, it’s one of those games.”

On injuries: “We are not going to make excuses for that. Last week, we were talking about how good our subs are off the bench. We just weren’t good enough today.

“We need to look at ourselves and go again. We have games coming thick and fast in other competitions.”

Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton, speaking to TNT Sports: “Great win. The fans were unbelievable. We had to be patient – Villa are a top side.

“We know if we stick to the plan we would get the chances. Eddie [Nketiah], buzzing for him, first goal in the Premier League [for Crystal Palace].

“The home form has not been the best, but we are not thinking about that.

“We know the tactics that the gaffer has given us and if we stick to the plan, we know we have a great chance in every game we play.”

This is what fans are saying as Crystal Palace aim a dig at Robin Olsen, who was booed by fans for ‘ruining’ a kids half time penalty shoot-out…

@bobbymaytum: If this was Jamie Vardy people would say it was class 😭

@Angels35Karen: @CPFC You need to give Rob a raise this was comedy gold last night.. handled the situation so well lol 😂 didn’t work for them in the end lol looossseeeerrrrrrssss @AVFCOfficial #spoiltkids

@NeilCrosby33991: What happened to the other goal? He’s coming on at half time probably that end. I reckon that’s his priority and he’s within his right as that’s his job.

@Gilds85: What’s he doing? Keeper doing his warm up, poor from our lad here

@AshtonVilla6: Not sure why your posting this TBF looks very bad on your club. Players get priority at a football match. This guy just looking for attention hopefully gets the attention he wants in his managers office today.

@MolineuxExpress: Robin Olsen went on to concede three goals in that second half. At the same time, the Palace mascots and co should’ve went to the other goal. You could argue for both sides in fairness as he was warming up to come on at half time

@JamieCutteridge: The Palace announcer having a very public strop because Olsen wouldn’t move his half time warm up (before coming on for an injured Martinez) so the mascots could have a kick around was the highlight of tonight by a mile. Incredible meltdown: moral victory for Villa.

@mcfcsb: absolute nothing wrong with this. olsen getting ready to come on on the pitch he’s playing on whilst kids who are only there coz of a competition expect to use the goal the keeper needs to use. well done robin olsen

@JSJHolloway: Disgusting from Robin Olsen, refused to let the @AVFCOfficial & @CPFC kids do the half time challenge. What a terrible attitude and awful way to treat your own fans #cpfc

@Jonno55Ng: Hahahaahha quality… #karma

@standinthesun:Made himself look a right twat tonight 🤣
