Crunching tackles, controversy and surprise Dembele appearance as Sheff Utd beat Sunderland

Crunching tackles, controversy and a surprise Ousmane Dembele appearance as Sheff Utd beat Sunderland on a cold wet Wednesday night.

The Blades picked up a 2-1 victory as goals from Manchester City loan partners Tommy Doyle and James McAtee, boosted their side’s automatic promotion hopes. The duo netted after Edouard Michut got the Black Cats’ opener and his his first goal in English football on 30 minutes.

Sheffield United took advantage of Middlesbrough’s draw with Stoke City a day earlier, and go six points clear of third position in the Championship.

Jebbison was fortunate to avoid injury as Hume dived in recklessly close to the touchline. He took Jebbison out and completely missed the ball.

Sunderland’s complaints were ignored by the referee when Sheffield United won the match just after the hour. Doyle’s free kick from the left flank landed in the far corner. Although there were some claims of offside, Sander Berge did not get a touch.

Sunderland fought back when Foderingham denied Ba, and Roberts hit the foot of the post with a drive just inside the box.

Sheffield United overcame all obstacles thrown at them to seal a win on Wearside.

Meanwhile, TV cameras spotted a Barcelona player sat in the directors’ box at the Stadium of Light.

Dembele has been sidelined with a hamstring injury and was keen to see first-hand how exciting England’s second division can be it seems, as he was seen from the directors’ box.

In the second half of the Sky TV camera panned to the Frenchman, showing him sitting next to 25 year old Kyril Louis Dreyfus.

They have been friends for many years and shared photos on Instagram of their Florida vacation.

Dembele also congratulated Sunderland for their promotion after their win over Wycombe in the playoff final.

Sunderland’s Tony Mowbray:

“We played against a good team, found it difficult to match them first half.

“They showed their experience and we knew they would. We scored a really good goal, the timing of their first goal was damaging for us.

“It would be great if the referee or linesman could come here and say why they allowed the second goal to stand.

“A member of our coaching staff has said the referee has apologised and said he got it wrong, which doesn’t mean much for us.

“I don’t even think it is in doubt, he is interfering with play.

“Between the two of them they have got it badly wrong and ultimately it has cost us.

“If people make a genuine effort to get the ball, he (Berge) missed it by millimetres, there’s even an argument it grazed his knee, and he started in an offside position.

“I have been in football since I left school and offside is offside.

“In my mind it shouldn’t have happened. We have to suffer the consequences.”

Sheffield United’s Paul Heckingbottom:

“If I am Tony (Mowbray) I am claiming that.

“It is harsh on Tony, if I am seeing that, I’m spewing.

“But he is not blocking the keeper’s sight and there’s no touch, I don’t know the law.

“We were really bright, brave and sharp with the ball.

“To concede the way we did was a kick in the teeth.

“We showed good mentality to get back into it, the energy and bravery we wanted to show. I’m pleased with the response.

“We got the goal we deserved first half.

“The message was the same at half-time and I was pleased with how we did respond and played.

“I am proud of all the staff and players and how professional we have been.

“This week could be a huge week in careers for the players and the history of the club, that is what we are playing for.

“We can’t be fearful, we are in a fantastic position in the league and in the quarter-final of the cup.”

This is what fans had to say amid the crunching tackles, controversy and surprise Dembele appearance as Sheff Utd beat Sunderland…

ON DEMBELE

@1875Ben: When you accidentally attend a match on football manager

@Bopper70Safc: Massive @LukeONien fan, apparently 😎

@HauntedLFC: Looks like he’s got no idea where he is… “I thought this was Real v Liverpool?”

@kaposi_david: Bro doing side quests

@eb92safc: Ousmane Dembele at the Sunderland game. Diallos replacement in the summer?

@JacKLynch321: Wants to improve his game by watching amad diallo

@SAFCEd79: Ousmane Dembele at the SoL wtf 😭

@nocontextfm1: Probably managed them on Football Manager didn’t he, living the dream the lad

ON SHEFF UTD WINNER

@RWBielsa: Shocking. So so poor from the linesman. Refereeing in this country is an absolute sham.

@smith_ingham: 3 offside, one plays at the ball inside the 6 yard area so keeper doesn’t know what to do. Should definitely have been ruled out for offside. Poor officiating

@boro_alex2: EFL officials just get more and more bizarre

@barryboo55: I’m a blade and that’s offside but then again it’s a red card in the first half, penalty to Sunderland also plus a penalty to the Blades…..it’s what happens without VAR but that’s football.

@LRyalls: Sending my wishes to Don Goodman and his family at this tough time ❤️

@staples5230: Definitely offside

@pootzwar: It’s every week the referee spoils the game!! They should be accountable if I am shit at my job I get sacked. These clowns 🤡 don’t even after explain there decisions 🤬

@rokerite97: Every week man. Not just Sunderland either. Teams get fucked over weekly by incompetence.

@WadeSAFC: Take away the offside…. what the fuck is Patto doing? 2 stepping in Gatsbys? Awful keeper. That shouldn’t even beat a semi pro keeper.

@Owensara5: State of officials summed up when the ref diesnt even engage in conversation with ballard. They even know they ate wrong and haven’t got the bollocks needed to do the job their paid to do

@MJJ93__: How the linesman and referee don’t deem this offside just speaks fucking volumes of how poor the officiating is in this country. Stevie Wonder would’ve seen the fucker.

@BenCuth: Another game, another 🤡. Every single week, every single division. No answers, no accountability, just sheer arrogance.

@Snobzee84: Why are officials in this country so poor, you have to get the basics like this right. Time to offer cricket style reviews to managers/captains so clear and obvious errors like this are picked up #Footy3rdUmp #safc

ON CRUNCHING TACKLE

@Woody_9: Can someone please explain to me why Don Goodman’s primary concern is the number of players surrounding the ref and not the fact that Trai Hume has very nearly broken a quality 19 year old prospects leg. He should be ashamed to call himself an impartial commentator. #sufc

@MatthewWragg8: No where near the ball.. out of control… all the needs for a red card… 🤷🏻

@0114_Harry: Fails to mention the 6 Sunderland players that come straight in too. Definite red old Don would have been squealing like a pig if he or his team mate were on the other end of it. Did nothing but talk bollox all game thank fuck I was there in real time first.

@RickRicklong: Don Goodman – the only commentator who makes you miss Andy Hinchliffe

@andyb861: Sky commentator Sheffield United players surrounding ref. Yes because that’s a vile tackle !!

@michaelrenwick_: Red card all day long Hamer or Dabo do that they are sent straight off no hesitation but yet again, Sunderland getting refereeing decisions in their favour.

@scuba178: Not in control, careless, and endangers his opponent. How is that not a red card!

@philbear04: You know what sky sports, this absolute clown of a “commentator” is so biased its beyond belief. As clear a red as you can ask for and this 🔔end is more concerned about the players reaction. What has he got against sufc to be this one eyed. Its actually disgusting. Have a word.

@goodolblade: 2 footed and off the floor is a red!

@flyingmonkeyuk: The more I listen to Goodman’s comms on this, the more wound up I get. In today’s game, that could easily have been a red, yet he’s more interested in the players surrounding the ref. He then watches the foul back and doesn’t even suggest that it could have been a red.
