Cornard United sign ex-Everton, Sheffield United, Ipswich and Crystal Palace striker

Non-league minnows Cornard United have surprised fans on social media by signing ex-Everton, Sheffield United, Ipswich and Crystal Palace striker Marcus Bent.

The 41-year-old striker has come out of retirement to play for the Thurlow Nunn League First Division North club following a tumultuous spell out of the game.

He made 574 professional appearances, scored 113 goals, in a career which began at Brentford and ended with an 11-game spell at Indonesia Super League side Mitra Kukar in April 2012.

Cornard boss Childs Tweeted: “Really pleased to have Marcus on board and looking forward to working with him.”

The Ards currently sit 12th in the First Division North table and even made an appearance at the final of the Suffolk Senior Cup which was held at Ipswich Town’s Portman Road last season, Conard ended up losing 4-3 to Achilles FC.

Bent has been in some controversy since retiring from professional football in 2012. Last year, he was declared bankrupt he ran into huge debts having seen investments in a number of tax avoidance schemes fail.

He avoided a stint in jail after admitting to an attack on police officers in 2016, he was high on cocaine when he attacked police officers, bare-chested, with a meat cleaver and kitchen knife.

He was tasered to prevent doing harm on the officers and was given a suspended sentence for affray and possessing the Class A drug.

Bent landed himself in trouble once again when he was caught in possession of cocaine at Chessington World of Adventures in 2017. He was ordered to pay a £385 fine as well as costs.
