There was confusion as Tottenham keeper Guglielmo Vicario avoids punishment after handling the ball outside of the box.
Brentford scored inside 22 seconds for the second week running, then Dominic Solanke got his first goal for Spurs with the leveller. Brennan Johnson and James Maddison were also on target to give the hosts a 3-1 victory.
Ange Postecoglou’s side climb up to 10th in the Premier League table, with 7 points, while Brentford fall to 12th with 6 points.
The big talking point from the match however came with Brentford feeling aggrieved in the second half when Vicario seemingly handled the ball outside of the area, struggling to catch a delivery and took a few swipes at the ball.
The Bees players protested, but referee John Brooks was unmoved while VAR (Alex Chilowicz and Darren Cann, on VAR and assistant VAR duties) didn’t intervene, then Brentford boss Thomas Frank and defender Kristoffer Ajer were booked for complaining before Vicario went on to make a couple of crucial saves.
Vicario didn’t get punished for this by the way
You work hard all week only for a predetermined agreement between @premierleague and the @FA_PGMOL to decide what should happen in advance
The corruption is real – we all need to get what’s going on

@BrentfordFC tweeted: “Huge appeals for handball against Vicario!
“He misjudges a cross and appears to handle it outside his area to prevent Damsgaard shooting but nothing is given! 😡
“To make matters worse, he then makes a superb save to deny Mbeumo a leveller”
Nedum Onuoha couldn’t understand VAR’s lack of intervention, saying on BBC Final Score: “Earlier, Guglielmo Vicario comes out of his area and makes three attempts at touching the ball.
“From the angle we see the third touch, if there was another angle of it, I think they would say that it came outside the box, so that would be a red card.
“It is strange VAR has missed that, very strange, because that is a big moment in the game.”

Journalist Jay Harris claims he had a good laugh with Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou when asked about Guglielmo Vicario’s apparent unpunished handball.
Speaking in his post-game press conference, Ange said, per football.london: “I think I saw exactly what you saw,” when questioned what he made of the incident.
When the reporter replied that they weren’t 100% sure, Postecoglou added: “Well what makes you think I am surer? I was closer to the pitch? You were higher up though. Okay, so maybe I saw exactly what you saw.”
Asked if Tottenham “got away” with Vicario not seeing a red card, Postecoglou responded: “Get away with it? So have you seen it and said it’s outside, because I haven’t seen it. I’ve got no idea.”
The journalist claimed that the incident wasn’t deemed to be an obvious goalscoring opportunity, explains why the VAR room didn’t get involved, to which Postecoglou closed the matter with a “lucky” admission.
“So, if it wasn’t an obvious goalscoring opportunity, it means even if he was penalised it would have been a free-kick and that’s a big turning point in the game? A free kick outside the box? (laughs) Okay, look I guess we were lucky to get the result.”

Sky Sports say the outcome, by the letter of the law, should’ve been a free-kick and yellow card for Vicario.
VAR can only intervene for a red-card incident, which this would have been if there was the denial of a goal or goalscoring opportunity.
Brentford boss Thomas Frank chose not to blame the official and was clear the incident “didn’t define the game”.
Speaking in his press conference, Frank said: “He handballed it, but that incident didn’t define the game. The margins need to go our way. It was a mistake, it could have helped us, but the probability for scoring from that is low. John Brooks, overall, had a very good game. the way he handled stuff, fouls both ways. It was the wrong decision but hey, move on.”
💬 “There are a lot of positives and also some things we need to do better against a good Tottenham side”

There was more confusion as Guglielmo Vicario avoids punishment after handling the ball outside of the box…
@Skourch9: Insane fixing two weeks in a row. No red for Kovacic and nothing here, two yellows for Brentford actually. Awful decisions.
@GDTaylor6972: RIDICULOUS DECISION this is blatant corruption in the premier league. If that was ‘little old brentford’ that did that, flekken would have been sent off twice. Unbelievable refereeing in the premier league TWO WEEKS IN A ROW, both decisions FOR the big teams… SHOCK
@freelander97: State of refs in this league. We got someone booked for complaint about that
@ashgraham98: Vicario should of been given a straight red card for that!! Shocking from the officials yet again!!
@BayanFenwick35: So Vicario handballs the ball on purpose outside the box, on purpose, about 5 meters from the referee who is watching without any blocking in his vision??? The referee the. gives yellow cards to the people who are complaining at him!!!! Worst referees in the world.. @FA_PGMOL
@DailyCannon: Watching that Vicario deliberate handball outside the box it becomes even more evident that referees have far more ‘choice’ than they told us after Declan Rice.
@Bear7532: At least once. Almost certainly twice. Stonewall red card! 🤬🤬🤬
@briwall89: This and the Martinez two footed challenge today makes you wonder what’s the point, the officials will do as they please and ignore what they want to.
@mancityneil: The refereeing in this country is absolutely shambolic.
@joshh_bfc: Just got to laugh sometimes. Who’d believe that this resulted in 2 yellow cards for us, and nothing for Vicario
@callummaguire96: Sack them all! Incompetent
@JImblee1: When even Spurs fans are questioning why their keeper is still on the pitch you know the standard of refereeing has hit rock bottom. There’ll be no explanation from the hapless Howard Webb or @FA_PGMOL about what could have been a game changing moment. Fxxxxx sick of this shit.
