Chelsea to investigate incident after super sub Ollie Watkins nets twice to give Villa 11th win in a row

Chelsea say they are to investigate an incident after super sub Ollie Watkins nets twice to give Aston Villa their 11th win in a row.

Unai Emery’s side staged a stunning comeback to beat Chelsea 2-1, keeping Villa three points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal.

Chelsea had gone in front thanks to Joao Pedro’s goal from a corner, and dominated until a triple substitution around the hour mark , Watkins, Onana and Sancho coming on.

Substitute Ollie Watkins levelled within minutes via a rebound, then headed home the winner from a corner sent in by Tielemans.

After the game, journalist Matt Law tweeted: “Chelsea will investigate where a plastic bottle that showered the Aston Villa bench in water was thrown from after the Midlands club reported the incident.”

The incident took place. after the final whistle, during Villa’s celebrations, with a plastic water bottle chucked towards their bench, showering substitutes and staff.

Aston Villa lodged a formal complaint, leading to Chelsea launching an investigation.

Daily Mail report that the club will cooperate fully with Villa (and potentially authorities), look at CCTV footage, and determine the thrower’s origin—possibly near the Chelsea dugout.

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “We kept the same game plan we had at the first half, but the first half they were playing fantastic.

“They were dominating. We couldn’t get the ball easily. We were defending low, we are defending well. We didn’t concede corners, only one corner and they score.

“But we needed to be passionate and try to keep being resilient and we were speaking after the first half in the dressing room.”

On what he told the substitutes as they came on: “We were getting better but we needed to change some fresh legs and as well different players.”

On Ollie Watkins’s performance: “He was so, so focused. Keeping the game plan like we planned and doing his tasks, he’s normally getting his numbers and today scoring goals is fantastic.”

On the chance to go level with league leaders Arsenal if they beat them on Tuesday: “We are playing against Arsenal and our mentality is to compete strongly. And we are not going to speak about our target in the league until we are in the day 34 because there are teams contending with a huge power to get points like Liverpool, like Chelsea and they are keeping contending more than us to be there. Of course we are performing very well, we are in a row winning matches, we are competing fantastic, we competed first half fantastic and we were struggling. But the second half more or less like this season we are progressively getting better and being humble.”

On if he sees his side in the title race: “No, 38 matches. If it finishes tomorrow then this match against Arsenal is finishing the league. There is still another 20 matches to play.”

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, speaking to Match of the Day: “I think for one hour, until we conceded, we dominated the game. We were very good. Unfortunately, after that, the dynamic of the game changed a little bit. I think by the time they scored to make it 1-1, we should have scored two or three more.”

Did Villa’s substitutions midway in the second half change the game? “Yeah it changed the dynamic. Again, the first half and the first 15 minutes of the second half we should have scored more goals.”

Did you substitute Cole Palmer due to fitness concerns? “No, I think he was working very hard but he was a bit tired. Overall, he had a good game.”

Did a lack of experience cost Chelsea? “If you analyse the first hour of the game, you are not talking about experience. But after that, we struggled with that. The changes they did – Watkins, Onana and Sancho – improved them a little bit.”

Did you struggle to get any of your messages across due to the touchline ban? No, no, no. We had the connection there. It was not difficult.”

Aston Villa forward Ollie Watkins, speaking to Sky Sports: “An amazing win. For me personally to come on and score two goals is a great feeling – but to keep up this run and come here, a tough place, and beat Chelsea is amazing.”

On Unai Emery’s tactical tweaks in the second half: “He changed it because Chelsea were going man for man but they had the extra centre-back when we were going long. When I came on in the second half he brought Jadon Sancho and Morgan Rogers on the wing and put Youri Tielemans in the No 10 – so we had an extra man in there. He’s a tactical genius.”

On his own form: “I haven’t been where I want to be but I can use this as a marker to push on for the end of the season.”

On his first goal: “I can’t say that’s a classy finish at the end of the day, but I’ll take it all day long.”

On his second goal: “He wasn’t marking me too tightly, so it’s basically a free header. It’s nice to see it float into the corner.”

Can Aston Villa win the title: “I feel like teams are worried about us, even if we may not play the prettiest football at times. We’re taking each game as it comes and focusing on ourselves really. There’s a lot of talk about us and people asking if we can win the title, but it’s a long way away. We’re just focusing on the next game.”

Chelsea captain Reece James, speaking to Sky Sports: “I think it’s always disappointing to lose at home. We dominated 60/65 minutes of the game. The first 60 minutes they didn’t create any chances, and then they get one and then the game changes.

“I think we came out sharp the way we set up. The way we wanted to play on the front foot in the right way and second half one or two moments changed the game. They picked up momentum and it was difficult.

“They made substitutions. The shape maybe changed slightly but nothing we shouldn’t be able to deal with. We’ve played them numerous times and we understand the style and the way they want to play but I think we need to look at ourselves. We wanted to win and we didn’t, and we’re super disappointed.”

On what they should’ve done better: “Keep the ball out of the net. It’s as simple as that. We made one or two errors. One error leads to the corner and the other error leads to Ollie’s [Watkins] first goal, so I think we have ourselves to blame. Two errors from us and we got punished. This is the toughest league in the world.”

Twitter users reacted as Chelsea say they are to investigate an incident after super sub Ollie Watkins nets twice to give Villa 11th win in a row…

@Joey_CFC: Shouldn’t be too hard to find, it was the only bottle Chelsea showed tonight

@AshleyPerryUK: Can someone also investigate that second half performance?

@tom_avfc1: Chelsea bottling on and off the pitch hahahahah

@KierDoyle: Delap trying to boot a bottle at the Chelsea bench and has missed.

@Martin_Wickham: The headloss has been a thing since Pochettino was in charge. They simply cannot cope with changes in a game that the data tells them all cannot happen

@DanTheMan1118: To be fair, someone was probably aiming for the Chelsea bench

@TimmyfromOz888: Stay classy Chelsea FC 😏… #AVFC

@JayVtid: Water? It was obviously tears.

@Ant_CFC_203: The Villa bench got soaked with a water bottle. We got fucked. Fair’s fair.
