Celtic boss HEADBUTTED and called ‘little rat’ by Rangers coach after derby draw

Celtic boss Fran Alonso was HEADBUTTED and called a ‘little rat’ by Rangers coach Craig McPherson after a fixture live on Sky Sports.

After Caitlin Hayes’ late equaliser for Celtic, Alonso celebrated wildly, running down the touchline and beating his chest before joining the celebrations with his teammates on the pitch.

The Rangers staff were left gutted after Hayes’ goal came in the 99th minute, with some words coming between the benches as Celtic celebrated.

While both players and staff were shaking hands at Broadwood Stadium, McPherson approached Alonso, before and went in with a headbutt.

After the horrible scenes that occurred during a live match on Sky Sports, Alonso said he won’t be a seeking a long ban for Rangers assistant McPherson.

‘It is frustration,’ said the Spaniard. ‘It is not how I would show frustration but that is what it was and I understand what happened.

‘It is football. These are the emotions. It was not much. I felt a little bit of contact and then I heard him call me a ‘little rat’. I don’t know why. I don’t know the reason.

‘You would have to ask him. But I had no issues with them during the game. But, honestly, for me, it is nothing. It can stay here as part of the game.

‘I don’t wish him to be banned or suspended. It is not something you want to see but for me it is not a big issue.’

Alonso also said he was entitled to celebrate Hayes’ leveller.

‘I was frustrated in the final stages because we had been pushing for the goal,’ he said. ‘It was an explosion of happiness. That was our section, our fans. They were as happy as I was. It was a beautiful moment that we deserved.’

Malky Thomson, the Rangers manager, played down the incident, though admitted it was serious enough for his club to investigate.

‘Without seeing it, I won’t comment on it. If that’s the case there will be an investigation,’ said Thomson.

‘Craig is not that type of person. I think it is passion and we saw a lot of that on the pitch with two top sides coming together.’

Celtic head coach Fran Alonso was delighted with the win:

“We wanted the three points but we knew we were facing a top, top side.

“At the end we put a centre-back up front and we never gave up. To score like that, it almost feels like a win.

“I’m very, very proud of the guys. I felt like it was one half per team so it’s a fair result.

“We are definitely in a title fight. We have to play Glasgow City twice and Rangers, obviously every game will be difficult.

“The only thing we lost today is it isn’t in our hands anymore, we depend on Rangers taking points from Glasgow City now as well.”

Malky Thomson said their title bid could be over:

“I think it was a great spectacle for the fans watching it and it had everything. A bit of drama, two goals.

“I’m gutted but we’re Rangers, we’ll need to pick ourselves up and move on.

“It’s really difficult, especially considering the first half when we were excellent.

“We had a real good chance to make it 2-0 and put the game out of reach. It was an entertaining game, obviously it leaves us battling for second place now, but maybe there will be some more thrills and spills.

“I’m a bit gutted, but we’ll pick ourselves up and move on.”
