Burnley come into the game off a 5-0 drubbing at the hands of Man City – their fourth successive 5-0 defeat at the Etihad, leaving them second from bottom in the Premier League table.

Any hopes of building on a first league win of the season against Crystal Palace on the Monday before were blown away by a hat-trick from Riyad Mahrez, who scored the opening two goals inside the first quarter of the game to pretty much decide the outcome before heading in the last with just over 20 minutes to go.

Burnley rued the absence of some of their senior men as their resources were badly stretched and must look to bounce back against less formidable foes to resume the progress they had started to show.

Everton are also coming off a loss having been defeated at home 1-0 by Leeds thanks to Raphinha’s late stunner in a game packed full of chances but not goals.

The Toffees have lost four of their last five games, the exception being a tight 3-2 win over Fulham in their most recent away outing.

Eleven points separate the sides heading into this opening Premier League fixture of the weekend, with the Toffees in eighth and their opponents in the bottom three.

The two clubs last met on Boxing day of 2019, in a match Everton won 1-0 at Goodison Park

PRESS CONFERENCE:

Carlo Ancelotti

On performances

“Of course the result was not good against Leeds, but it was an open game. We want to stay attached to the top of the table so it will be important to have a result tomorrow.”

On five subs

“I’m not surprised [it didn’t come up in meeting], because there is discussion about this. I think, in the end, it will be important to take care of the health and welfare of the players.”

On January transfer window plans

“We are not focused there. We have eight games in one month. We are focused there. Not on January.”

On finding balance

“We are good offensively, we had problems defensively. Every game is a test to see how we are & tomorrow I hope we can be better on this aspect.”

On expectations against Burnley

“I think it will be the same game [as first in charge]. Burnley didn’t change its identity, it’s a strong one and a strong organisation. They are better now compared to the start of the season, we know what kind of game to expect.”

On fans returning

“It’s really good news. Football without fans is not the football we want to play or to watch. The supporters are a really important part of this environment, without the supporters it looks like a different sport.”

On expectations after almost a year

“This season, there is a lot of competition in front. We are still in front, we want to stay attached and prepare well for the second part of the season. We are where we want to be in this moment.”

On defensive system

“I think it’s an emergency, without two important players like Coleman and Digne. It is only for this reason. We have the quality in the squad to play with three centre backs because we have a lot of good centre-backs”

Sean Dyche

On injury build up

“We had a mass of injuries after the nine games last season. When the players came back they were really fit.”

“We have looked at training schedules, days off, I think it is awkward to define a reason. It could just be a spate of injuries which can happen.”

On takeover

“I don’t know where that is out. That is slightly peculiar as I have been manager here for eight years”

“But it is watch this space I guess. Until it becomes a reality I have just got to be open minded”

On Everton form

“They have an incredibly experienced manager and a strong group of players. I think it shows the strength of the Premier League”

“In a strange way it is pleasing to see that bigger clubs and top managers have those tough spells and that it can happen to anyone. They are a very good side.”

“We have to take on the mentality on from the Palace game and make sure we look after ourselves”

On his 200th PL game in charge

“I think you become more rounded. On the pitch you try and learn as you go, it is always tough in the Premier League.”

On contracts…

“We are keeping all lines of communication open with their players and agents as we see fit”

On Premier League picture

“I think it was last season someone said after one game this is how the season is going to pan out! I think people can make their mind up very quickly.”

“We know the realities of the Premier League and the points tallies and markers of where we should be and shouldn’t be.”

“It goes out the window unless you are performing right and winning games.”

“We showed that a couple of seasons ago when we got to the 19th game and had 12 points and ended up with 40 points after a very strong second half of the season.”

“It is not always about form, goals scored, goals against. That gives you a guide and the guidelines are sometimes broken as we have shown ourselves.”

“At the minute we are okay and we want to make sure we get more points more quickly because it does align you better for the rest of the season.”

FORM:

Burnley Premier League form: DLLDWL

Everton Premier League form: DLLLWL

LINEUPS:

Burnley possible starting lineup:
Pope; Lowton, Tarkowski, Mee, Taylor; Gudmundsson, Westwood, Benson; McNeil; Rodriguez, Wood

Everton possible starting lineup:
Pickford; Godfrey, Mina, Keane; Davies, Allan, Doucoure, Iwobi; Rodriguez, Calvert-Lewin, Richarlison

THATSAGOAL TIPS:

Dominic Calvert-Lewin Anytime Scorer – 11/8 with FanTeam

The Premier League’s top goalscorer, Dominic Calvert-Lewin currently has 10 goals to his name in as many matches. Everton may have gone off the boil with four defeats in their last five but DCL has continued to score with four during that period.

Burnley picked up their first win of the season against Crystal Palace before succumbing to their customary 5-0 defeat to Manchester City. Backing Everton to win may be a step too far given their recent form but a goal from their in-form striker seems entirely plausible against the Clarets.
