Brighton fans mock Graham Potter with cheeky chant in impressive win at home to Chelsea

Brighton fans mock former manager Graham Potter with a cheeky chant in their impressive 4-1 win at home to Chelsea on Saturday afternoon.

The Seagulls left their opponents shocked as they fought their way a stunning victory to spoil Potter’s return at the Amex Stadium with Leandro Trossard put his side ahead in the fifth minute of the match with excellent footwork in front of the net to beat Kepa, before own goals from Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Trevoh Chalobah made it 3-0 to the hosts.

Chelsea looked a different side in the second half, with forward Kai Havertz heading home Conor Gallagher’s cross to get one back in the 48th minute, but the hosts’ defence and a solid performance from goalkeeper Robert Sanchez kept them in control before Pascal Gross made it 4-1 in added time and send the away fans, or should we say what was left of them, heading for the exits.

The win marks the first time Brighton have beaten Chelsea in league football, leaving questions for Chelsea manager Potter who was making his return 52 days after leaving the fellow Premier League club.

Brighton’s Leandro Trossard: “I’m really pleased. We knew it wouldn’t be as easy in the first half as they would try to come and score a goal. I thought we did really well then finished it off at the end.

“I think the team has had a good start to the season. We played really well but needed that win. Four goals as well. Let’s enjoy tonight.

“Yes of course. I had a few really good years under Graham Potter. There will be a bit of time [before chatting] after this performance but it’s up to us now to celebrate it as we were the better team so need to enjoy it. Another thing to celebrate for us.”

Brighton captain Lewis Dunk to BBC: “It was a nice feeling to finally get three points for the new gaffer.

“It was strange. It was the first competitive game against [Graham Potter]. We dealt with their threats well and I thought we were outstanding in the first half. Overall we were the better team.

“We pressed well from the front and stopped them do what they do. We counter-attacked quickly and showed we could do it.

“Potter gave me a lot of help and improved me a lot. Hopefully the new manager can do more as well. We have already shown a lot in the last few games and hopefully we can keep improving.

“I’m thankful to both of them [Potter and Marc Cucurella]. They had an opportunity and chose to take it. That’s football, everyone has to move at times.”

Brighton manager Graham Potter: “Yes of course. The scoreline and the defeat is a painful one. We didn’t really recover. Once the crowd were so engaged it was a difficult one for us. The scorelline was painful. Brighton played a good game especially in the first half.

“You can always look at goals and think you can do better. We have to take responsibility a bit in the first half. We have had a lot of football but that’s no excuse. We couldn’t quite get to that level. We didn’t take our oopportunities in attack and they did.

“We had some opportunities to attack them too but unfortunately we missed the pass or didn’t execute, then the scoreline was a painful one. When you lose you can always do better.”

On boos from Brighton fans: “I have nothing to apologise or say sorry for. I think I did a good job at the club and left it in a good place but people are entitled to their opinions.

“It’s part of the process. You have to suffer and feel pain in order to grow and get better. Nobody said we were the finished article. We have to take the pain today and learn from it.”

Chelsea manager Graham Potter, speaking to Sky Sports: “They played well, the atmosphere was really intense here. We didn’t necessarily match that level of intensity.

“We had some opportunities to test the keeper, but it was too open and Brighton were dangerous. We were pushing and pushing and throwing players on, but Brighton deserved it. You have to say congratulations to them.

“Brighton were better at what they did, so we have to take that as a lesson – even though that’s a painful one for us.

“You have to congratulate Brighton. The intensity was there and we suffered a little bit. The players are an honest bunch – we win and lose together – so we have to take stock and move forward.”

Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi to Sky Sports: “I am very happy for the players, for the club and the people working with our team and these great fans. They were the best player on the pitch. They helped us a lot and I am very happy.

“In the first 20-25 minutes we were fantastic. We played like men. We have a style and the first 20-25 minutes was fantastic, really fantastic.

“We prepared the team with one-to-ones. All players were fantastic.

“No I don’t want to celebrate anything. Next Saturday there is another game and I am sorry for the Chelsea goal because in the second half we suffered a stupid goal and made a mistake. They changed their tactical position and we weren’t ready to change something for us. But I’m happy because 4-1 against Chelsea is an amazing result.”

Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi speaking to BBC: “It’s a fantastic atmosphere, fantastic fans and players and it was a fantastic game. It was a great game against a great team because Chelsea have a very good and an important coach and players. I am happy.

“The most important thing in football is the players always. We can give information and advice to our players but they are the most important.

“We must continue to play this level of football. We have to think only about the level of performance. The results are important because they can change something in our head but when you work in football you can change something in the way you play not the result.

“Atmosphere was fantastic. Our fans were the best player on the pitch and it is very nice to work in Brighton. I am proud for this.

“We played well in the last few games. Now we are happy with the result but I was happy the same without the result.

“Robert Sanchez was fantastic like the other players. He is changing something because I want him to build-up more than in the past. He gives me total confidence in my style of play.”

On booing for Graham Potter: “No I don’t want to speak for this. I am sorry for these things. I don’t know the situation of the past and I don’t want to know.”

This is how social media users reacted as Brighton fans mock Graham Potter with a cheeky chant in their impressive win at home to Chelsea…

@Carlbhafc: What an incredible way to show the ex-#BHAFC snakes that money and and a club status isnt everything. We dominated, got behind our boys, made our feelings clear towards them and our own, they even had the ref on their side and still couldnt win! Up the shagging sea pigeons! 🔵⚪️

@camiles87: At least he can’t criticise Chelsea fans for not booing at FT. They were already on the train home!

@fplplod: Yeah he did a good job, no one denies that and we’re thankful for the progress he gave the club and we all expected him to take the next step… but it’s the way he left, the way Chelsea went about their business and still continue to do so.

@EliasTaproot: Glad he’s fully embracing the inner snake, it’s about time. We saw little signs of how much of a prick he can be with his history lesson bullshit. May as well fully commit to it. I wish you the very worst Graham, go fuck yourself.

@GFewings: I agree with him. Changed our game and left us in a good place. He’s not here anymore. We move under roberto

@BhaMelvs: Maybe he should take a history lesson about the last 8 weeks #bhafc

@L_BHAFC: He was actually expecting 30k of claps and us to roll over and let him win didn’t he 😂

@bhafcjason: Never wanted to manager to fail quite so bad.

@Brightonfan: Has he told the Chelsea fans, they need a history lesson yet?!

@FPLSeagull: YESSSSS!! My head is pounding, my voice is gone. The Amex was bouncing! They stole half our club from us, and we’ve gone and beaten them 4-1! De Zerbi’s first win, Potter’s first defeat – whoever wrote the script done a bloody good job! Unlucky Potter. FORZA DE ZERBI 💙

@Jackp93: Lol what a melt. Good “lesson” for him today.

@ConnorWhiten: POTTER POTTER WHATS THE SCORE

@Chrisscore0: Completely outplayed us but not a massive fan of you booing your greatest ever manager. Can’t see it’s because he left because that was always going to happen.

@migstrends: Coming from a Chelsea fan, well played today. Thoroughly deserving 👏👏 The way your team pressed, so brave in attack and non-stop running backed by an attack minded coach was truly impressive. Let’s hope our miserable but talented divas learn from this hiding. All the best.
