Brentford and Tottenham fans taunt each other with savage chants on Kane and Toney

Brentford and Tottenham fans took to taunt each other with some hilarious yet savage chants on Harry Kane and Ivan Toney on Boxing Day.

Yes, the Premier League is finally back following a break due to the winter World Cup in Qatar, and boy did this fixture between the two sides throw up something thrilling.

It was just 16 days ago since Harry Kane missed that second spot kick of his for England against France one quarter final clash, so a lot of eyes were on him this afternoon.

He started the game, as did Ivan Toney, who was fully focused on scoring goals for Brentford despite the gambling charges hanging over him, said manager Thomas Frank before the game.

The striker was issued with a charge for 262 alleged breaches of betting rules by the Football Association and the investigation started as he missed out on a place in England’s World Cup squad despite his fine form this season, and has until the 4th of January to respond to the charges.

“He is training well, he is doing everything he can to prepare and be ready to score goals on Boxing Day against Tottenham,” adds Frank.

It was a strong start for the Bees as they went ahead on the 15th minute as Fraser Forster manages to save Mathias Jensen’s volley from about 12 yards, only to lose the ball and it bounces straight out to Vitaly Janelt to placed it home.

Stephen Kelly (Former Tottenham defender on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra): It was just way too easy down the left. Spurs really poor defending, not enough people around the ball. Not a single Spurs player following this in. Really sloppy but nothing more than Brentford deserve.

Then not long after, a long ball was put over the top of the Tottenham defence and Ivan Toney was on hand to produce real composure to finish , however as the home crowd celebrate, the official raises an offside flag.

Tom Barclay tweeted during the opening half: “A section of the Brentford fans sing ‘You let your country down’ in the direction of Harry Kane. Sparks boos from travelling Spurs supporters, who sing ‘He’s one of our own’ and then take aim at Ivan Toney with ‘Toney, what’s the odds?’ and ‘You’re getting sacked in the morning'”

The second half started with Harry Kane wanting a penalty after Ivan Perisic sent in a great delivery towards the back post and Kane went down under a challenge from Ben Mee.

Spurs players rush to the referee to argue their case, VAR looked at it and nothing was given.

The 54th minute saw the goal flurry start, Tottenham’s afternoon went from bad to worse after Ivan Toney poked home from inside the six yard box after Christian Norgaard got his head on the end of a corner, all following a mis-kick by Eric Dier.

Then an impressive header by Harry Kane made it 2-1, getting on the end of a delicious cross sent in from Clement Lenglet to give David Raya no chance at claiming.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was there with 15 minutes or so left on the clock to draw the scoreline level with a fine curling finish.

Shortly after, Matt Doherty went down in the box after being on the end a challenge by Mathias Jorgensen, but again no penalty was awarded.

Moments later, Bryan Mbeumo went down in the Tottenham box and received a yellow card for trying to fool the referee.

More drama as Harry Kane tried to finish from six yards out but got his angles wrong, yet Tottenham’s players are adamant there was enough to claim a handball and wanted a penalty. Ref played on.

With around five minutes left on the clock, Tottenham went very close to grab a third only for Harry Kane’s header comes back off the woodwork.

Raya kept out Son’s chance, proving to be the final one of the game, it finished a 2-2 draw, and the Premier League was back with a bang.

Stephen Kelly (Former Tottenham defender on BBC Radio 5 Live): It’s just staggering how much we see this from Tottenham. It’s almost as if they have to wind the manager up and get in at half-time. I can imagine what might happen in that changing room. Then they come out the second half and are fired up and energetic. Brentford in the first half were stifling Tottenham, bullying them, then couldn’t get in the game the second half.

“On one side, I have to be happy for the reaction and the way we played in the second half. Not just because we scored two goals, but the energy, desire and intensity that we played,” Conte said post-match. “On the other side, it’s nine games in a row we’ve conceded the first goal. This is not positive.”

“I understand we have great character and reaction, I understand that we believe in ourselves,” he added. “At the same time, it’s important to be stable for a team who wants to stay in a good position in the table. To concede for many games the first goal, also two goals, we have to make reflections to try to find the solution.

“We have to try to do this from the start. We have to start in this way. In our mind, it was so. We wanted to start in this way, but we started the game with a goal [conceded] and in the second half with a goal from a set-piece.”

Thomas Frank said: “We knew they start slowly and we went quick. “From our perspective, there was no talk about ‘we need to start fast’. We always start fast.

“The performance was really good again from us, in the 90 minutes, we were the ones who should have won. The momentum swung their way when Kane scored the goal.

“But if you said to me that if Lenglet is crossing from there, and Kane is scoring from there, I’d say no chance, That was a situation I’d hope we solve better.”
