Brechin City have chosen to sack their manager after conceding 24 goals in their opening five fixtures of the 2020/21 season.
The Angus based club have got rid of Mark Wilson along with his assistant Simon Donnelly following the horrendous start to the campaign, which got a fair bit of mentions by Jeff Stelling on Sky Sports at the weekend.
‘The City’ have lost each game in both the Betfred Cup and League Two, and they now face a battle to get out of the relegation zone.
They also finished in last place (10th) last season, with the coronavirus pandemic halting the season and the standings were based on points-per-game.
Brechin got their latest season of a bad start as they went down 5-1 at home to current 5th place side Edinburgh City, before following that up by a 3-0 away loss to league leaders Elgin City on Saturday.
Dundee United hit six past them in the cup and then Scottish Premiership side St Johnstone went one better with seven.
It’s hardly surprisingly that the former United and Celtic midfielder becomes the first managerial casualty of the new SPFL season.
The 36-year-old, who previously managed Airdrie, was at the helm of Brechin for 13 months.

Brechin said in a club statement via their website: “Brechin City announce that manager Mark Wilson and assistant manager Simon Donnelly have been released from their contracts and have left the club with immediate effect.
“The club would like to thank Mark and Simon for their service and will now commence the search for a new management team.”

There was a time a Brechin keeper scored from the edge of his box to help his side beat Stirling in an entertaining Scottish League Two fixture.
Lewis McMinn scored the 90-yard wonder goal to end the club’s run of six straight defeats, however at the time (Decemebr 2019) sat four points behind Albion Rovers, who won 2-0 against Queen’s Park.
It’s what you’ve been waiting for…..@lewismcminn16 scores from the edge of his own box to round off the scoring in City’s 4-2 win over Stirling Albion this afternoon. pic.twitter.com/oOGLQ4m7Gx

And what made the goal even more surprising, Brechin bizarrely had already made a goal celebration GIF with the goal and his name included.
74’ GOOOOAAAALLLL CITY! WOULD YOU BELIEVE IT! ITS LEWIS MCMINN THE KEEPER FROM HIS OWN HALF!! pic.twitter.com/v5V4YsNr1y

One fan pointed out on social media: “Just two minutes before scoring, McMinn duck hooked a goal kick into the stand.”
Brechin had in fact trailed twice, Sean Heaver opened the scoreline after just 7 minutes, however that was cancelled out by City’s Kieran Inglis and Paul McManus from the spot.
Dylan Mackin got an equaliser to get Albion back in the game. McManus again got on the scoresheet when he headed the ball into the net after the break. Then as mentioned McMinn sealed the vital three points to give Brechin the 4-2 win.
21 year old McMinn spoke after the game, see what he said below…
His is still the club’s number one, but as previously stated, he and his side’s form is shocking right now.
A huge amount of fans commented after seeing Brechin City sack their manager after conceding 24 goals in five fixtures…
Where do I send my cv

You’re a Rangers fan from Falkirk you’ve got no idea what being a fan of these clubs is like.

The state of the Sevco mob laughing and boasting at this. Just pathetic. Hope Brechin can find a way through this. Best of luck from an EF fan.

Doesn’t matter who is the manager if the playing squad ain’t good enough..Time to go down the route of an old head to sort the club out,a great wee club which has lost its way

Wow! Didn’t muck about their lads. Not even a “best wishes for the future” platitude for the departing manager

He brought every single one in by saying they were all hungry…erm, no evidence of that.

A losing mentality has permeated the team since the ill-fated season in the Championship. Will take a while to get right.

Horrible club. I can’t wait until you go down and the sooner the better. Let the ambitious clubs progress and find your level.

Decent of Brechin to be looking to play that relegation playoff after all the carry on last season. ?

Some things never change?
— Colinp255 (@colinp255) October 27, 2020
Can’t wait to see them relegated.

Short, sharp and to the point. It’ll never catch on in the Scottish football statement world though.
