Crystal Palace ‘keep an open mind’ as list of managerial candidates emerge after Glasner’s departure

Crystal Palace are to ‘keep an open mind’ and will ‘take their time’ as list of managerial candidates emerge after Oliver Glasner’s departure.

On the 31st of May, Sky Sports said that Crystal Palace are preparing to move on to alternative targets with Andoni Iraola, set for formal discussions with Liverpool about their vacant managerial role.

“Frank Lampard, Pierre Sage and Dino Toppmoller are amongst a handful of options being looked at by the club hierarchy.

“However, there is no clear front runner at this stage and nothing has advanced with any candidate beyond preliminary discussions.”

@SamiMokbel_BBC tweeted on June 1st: “Lens boss Pierre Sage to hold talks with Crystal Palace over manager vacancy this week. No decision on new No 1 target and club keen not to rush process with at least five others in contention. Andoni Iraola, the previous top candidate, is set to join Liverpool.”

His report for BBC Sport sees Coventry’s Frank Lampard, Ipswich’s Kieran McKenna, Dino Toppmoller, Thomas Frank and Sean Dyche being considered as potential contenders with some already holding talks.

On the 21st of May, Sébastien Vidal said, translated from French: “If Crystal Palace fails in the Iraola deal, Pierre Sage will be the club’s priority. The French coach is appreciated but it will be difficult to dislodge him given the current state of things. To be continued.”

Then on the 31st of May and 1st of June, he added: “Discussions around a 3-year contract (2+1). Sage is interested in the project. No agreement at this stage but things are moving forward.

“I maintain that there are indeed established contacts between Crystal Palace and Pierre Sage.

“The real obstacle to the deal is that the coach is not free and that compensation will have to be paid to get him.

“Palace continues to explore all the avenues. But Sage is part of the plans.

“The BBC confirms that discussions between Sage and Crystal Palace will continue in the coming days. As announced ✅ the Lens coach is a very serious lead.”

Here’s what fans are saying with Crystal Palace to ‘keep an open mind’ as a list of managerial candidates emerge after Oliver Glasner’s departure…

@Dane_cpfc88: No to Dyche. Lampard and McKenna have to be long outsiders. Frank I think has shown his limits. Sage or Toppmoller for me and add Roger Schmidt into mix.

@mandyswagsta: It has to be sage or toppmoller the rest are not good at all and would be a backward step

@eaglemmoomin: bar Sage and Toppmoller that is not a great list. Lampard/McKenna might eventually turn out decent and IF we’d lost the UECL maybe. But we want to try and win the EL

@brock_a_d_84: The fact we qualified for Europa means we should only be looking at Toppmoller and Sage from that list. If we had lost to Vallecano then the rest would be fair enough but we have to aim higher now. We can’t take a backwards step and appoint Dyche 😳

@Mark_CPFC: We have to go all out for Sage because 4 of these 5 back up names take us down. Toppmoller i don’t know too much about but I reckon he’d have us 12th again

@nofiveisalive: Some move this by Palace. Very good coach, incredible what he’s done with Lens.

@GeorgeHilder5: That list is appalling. You’d think we’d just been promoted not in the europa league. How can we have done such little research?

@MichaeldeMonte2: Never, ever Dyche.

@IAG828: Sean Dyche. – dear God.

@georgeteddyDF: Bring me Thomas Frank or Sage #cpfc

@Alitheeagle1: I don’t think Thomas Frank is a bad appointment at all like some. Finished 4th Champions league first stage with Spurs. Would have qualified Brentford for Conference League if we hadn’t killed them by winning cup in my opinion. Not my number 1 choice but not against it. #CPFC

@chrisbashford7: The only two I would take on the list is sage or Thomas Frank either of them would be great

@Alitheeagle1: Yes I think Sage would be good and i would have ahead of Frank. However, I can see how Frank’s Premier league experience would be attractive to the board.

@LeeCPDAFC: Have we not got identified candidates in place since Glasner told Parish he was leaving, back in October? McKenna, Lampard & Dyche? Surely not! This would be like Palace of old, a manager to try and keep us up. 3 Trophies in a year & European winners! We’re beyond that now! #CPFC

@kevinhatchard: This would be a great signing for #cpfc. Lyon should never have sacked him, and he has worked wonders with Lens. Kept them in a title race for almost the whole season, and won the Coupe de France for the first time. Great man-manager, capable of getting the maximum out of players
