Brandon Williams gives first interview on signing for Ipswich after previous loan spell at Norwich

Man Utd’s Brandon Williams gives his first interview on signing for Ipswich Town after previous loan spell at Norwich City.

The 22 year old defender will spend the 2023/24 season on loan with the Championship side, linking up with former United coach Kieran McKenna at Portman Road.

Brandon who has made five appearances for the Reds across pre-season this summer, is now bringing a wealth of Championship experience with him, having spent the 2021/22 campaign on loan at Norwich City, with the latter club’s supporters expected to give him stick this season…

Town have completed the signing of Brandon Williams on a season-long loan from Manchester United.

The 22-year-old, who has made more than 50 appearances for the Red Devils, becomes Town’s fifth signing of the summer transfer window.

The move to Portman Road sees the versatile defender link up with Town Manager Kieran McKenna once again; the two having previously worked together both in the youth and first-team set-ups at Old Trafford.

Speaking to TownTV after completing the move, Brandon said: “It feels good to be down here and I can’t wait to get started.

“I’m coming here to hopefully get into the team and play a lot of games. There is some very good competition, which is a great challenge, but I’m excited to meet the players and get started.

“I played a lot of games when I broke through at United and have had a couple of tough seasons, too, so it’s good for me to get back out and start playing again.”

Brandon, who will wear the number 18 shirt at Town, continued: “Kieran was my youth team coach at United and from there we have had a great relationship. He has always had the standards of a coach at the top level and has had a big influence on me.

“He has always kept in touch with me to make sure I’m okay and I trust everything he says because he is great to learn off.

“I’m excited to work with him again.”

Kieran added: “We’re really pleased to have Brandon here.

“He’s someone I’ve known since a very young age and I’ve seen his journey and how hard he’s worked to get to where he’s got to. He’s still very young and has a large amount of experience for a 22-year-old, but is coming off a season where he hasn’t played many minutes and has had some bad luck with injuries.

“He’s a dynamic, athletic defender who plays with great energy and commitment and has good quality driving forward with the ball. He can go inside and outside from both wings and can pass and cross with both feet, he is an aggressive and positive defender who enjoys defending but can also give us thrust going forward from different positions.

“We think this is a good fit for our group and a really good step for him to come into our environment and culture, where he can work hard and get back to playing at the levels we know he is capable of.”

After coming through the United youth system, Brandon made his senior debut for the club in a Carabao Cup game with Rochdale in September 2019, before going on to score his first United goal in a 3-3 draw with Sheffield United two months later.

In total he made 36 senior appearances for United during his debut campaign, featuring in Premier League and Europa League matches, with a further 14 appearances coming during 2020/21, when he made his Champions League debut.

Brandon spent the 2021/22 campaign on loan at Norwich City, making 29 appearances, before returning to Old Trafford for the duration of last season.

He has been capped at U21 level by England.

Brandon Williams magic,
He wears a magic hat,
He used to play for scummers,
But said fuck no to that!
He’d rather play for Ipswich in the famous blue and white,
And when we win at Carrot road we’ll sing this song all night!
