Bradford’s Lewis Richards produces worst throw-in ever, then is forced off as shoulder pops out

Bradford’s Lewis Richards produces what fans called the worst throw-in ever, then is forced off as his shoulder pops out.

Spare a thought for him, having an afternoon to forget, firstly, saw the funny side when he fell over trying to take a throw in in the 3rd minute, his legs seemingly buckling on the run up, leading to laughs from Colchester fans. He smirked himself at what he had just done.

His day went from bad to worse however, booked for time-wasting in the 78th minute, then more seriously, he suffered a game-ending injury after going down in the 83rd minute in ‘considerable pain.’ His left shoulder had popped out and he required oxygen to help deal with the pain.

He had to have lengthy treatment from the club’s medical staff before being taken off, needing oxygen in the dressing room afterwards to help deal with the pain.

Richards is to have a scan on his injured shoulder with Bradford to assess it, while coming to terms with injury concerns in the squad, as Richards didn’t play in the Tuesday night game against Rotherham in the EFL Trophy and looks also doubtful for the game against Accrington at the weekend.

Tyreik Wright is also ruled out until the new year due to a thigh injury, meaning they only have Clarke Oduor at left wing-back.

The result left Bradford sitting 9th in the League Two table with 23 points from 16 games played, while Colchester are 21st with 14 points from 15 games.

Graham Alexander said, per T&A: “You build a squad and think, ‘yeah, if we lose this player, we’ve got that one as cover’.

“But it seems to be bang, bang, bang at the same spot.

“We’ll make sure we look after Lewis first of all. He’s had a tough week.

“We’ll see how he is and then we have to plan and prepare for the game on Tuesday.”

Meanwhile the likes of Aden Baldwin, Alex Pattison and Antoni Sarcevic also continue their rehab work with private sessions at the training ground.

Graham adding that he is keeping hopeful to see some of those able to link back up with the team in the coming days.

“The plan was to include them in some sort of capacity in training this week,” he added. “Fingers crossed that’s what is going to happen because we obviously need them back.”

Bradford followed up their draw at Colchester with a 1-0 defeat at home to Rotherham in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday night.

Rotherham went ahead early on, Shaun McWilliams nodding home after 5 minutes. Bradford also struck the woodwork three times.

Graham Alexander also felt that they should have had a penalty for a challenge on Richie Smallwood, only adding to their frustration of how unlucky they feel to have been of late.

“We should definitely have had a penalty on Richie,” said Alexander, per T&A.

“He’s saying it was absolutely a penalty and I’ve watched it again. It was a definite foul.

“We were the team in the ascendancy and dominating the attacking opportunities.

“We wouldn’t have stopped at 1-1. I think we’d have gone again.

“It’s disappointing that two weeks ago we get a penalty given against us in exactly the same scenario.

“But it’s not gone for us. That’s out of our control.

“We’re getting punished for anything we do give away and we just have to get a bit more quality in front of goal to take advantage of our strong spells.”
