Boos ring round as Anthony Patterson’s own goal vs Hull ends Sunderland’s unbeaten home record

Boos ring round the Stadium of Light as Anthony Patterson’s own goal vs Hull City ends Sunderland’s unbeaten home record.

On the 18th minute, the keeper came out to collect Joe Gelhardt’s corner from the Hull right and puts the ball into his own net.

Following Saturday’s action, Sunderland sit 4th in the Championship with 62 points from 34 games played and 8 points behind 2nd place Sheffield United who have a game in hand. Hull are 20th with 33 points from 33 games played.

Gary Bennett (Ex-Sunderland defender on BBC Radio Newcastle): “It’s gone through Patterson’s hands!

“He has to do better, he has to deal with it and make sure.

“Hull have something to hold on to now, they really got themselves back into the game after Sunderland’s bright start.”

Soon after, Hull cleared a free-kick and Lincoln freed Joe Gelhardt down their right.

The Leeds loanee played a lovely ball into Kyle Joseph and having seen his shot parried, the ball was then flicked to the back post where Matt Crooks backheeled it home from six yards only for it to be offside when the ball was played across.

Sunderland’s Regis Le Bris, per Sky Sports:

“The own goal changed the dynamic of the game because after that the opponent provided different problems. We tried to break the low block and didn’t find the solution.

“It is a shame because in this kind of game, silly mistakes can change many things. We have to think about these mistakes to improve our game.

“It is not a coincidence (conceding from a set-piece), we have to ask the questions.

“After that the energy of the group was OK. We tried but it wasn’t enough.

“This was the 34th game of the season. We have a small group. That can be a positive, because everyone is really involved, but at the same time, when we have injuries, we know that we can have a bit of a lack of depth in certain positions.

“That is just the characteristic of the squad this year. There are positives and negatives, we just have to try to manage things properly.

“I hope to see a reaction. I hope to have the capacity to react.”

Sunderland head coach Regis le Bris told BBC Radio Newcastle:

“It’s a shame because in these types of games silly mistakes can change things. For sure, we have to think about these mistakes because we have to improve our game. It’s not like a coincidence.

“The energy of the team was good and positive and they tried to start the game properly but the own goal changed the dynamic of the game because the opponent used a low, compact block and it was a different problem.

“It’s the 34th game, the season is long and we have a short squad so we can understand that we have a low point in our dynamic. The game wasn’t horrible but it wasn’t the best performance so far.

(On Le Fee injury): “It seems like a hamstring but we will have to see tomorrow.”

Hull’s Ruben Selles, per Sky Sports:

“It is about us, the next game, our attention to win the game. This was a fantastic job and we had to show character, be good defensively.

“The situation is always more difficult if you concede first but the application from the beginning here, we showed we were a threat. It is exceptional and we tried to put them under pressure and we did.

“We have to be ruthless. If we keep defending as we do, especially away from home, then we will do well.

“Now we have a challenge. We have not been able to back up our results by taking three points in consecutive games. We need to go on Tuesday, perform well, show character and then the score will take care of itself.

“Things happen in football but if we go there with personality and saying ‘nobody wants three points more than us’, that should be the mentality.”

Hull City head coach Ruben Selles told BBC Radio Humberside:

“It was a good performance from the team against a really good opponent away from home. It’s always difficult – they have pace and are energetic but the team showed character in possession and in the last 10 minutes when we had to defend the box we did it properly.

“I’m happy but I just put it into the dressing room now that we cannot allow ourselves one of those moments where we win one game and then don’t perform in the way that we should.

“It’s three days [until Cardiff away] so we need to recover and be ready to go and get three points.

“It’s important against a really good opponent that you try to apply the pressure as high as possible and keep them away from your goal and win balls for your own transition [and we did that well].”

Twitter users reacted after boos ring round as Anthony Patterson’s own goal vs Hull ends Sunderland’s unbeaten home record…

@Kershaw444: Poor from the Sunderland fans that

@waltonyeah: Wow, and just weeks after they won the league by signing Enzo Le Fee

@RyanC2408: And rightly booed absolutely embarrassing performance from the lot of them no pointing fingers cause they was all piss poor.

@lblackburn_18: Booing and an empty ground in a promotion race hahahaah. Pathetic

@GavinHedley: Surely the best fans in the world can’t be booing their 4th place in the league team off??? 😳

@superlufc1919: Look at those empty seats

@BfDeano: How far is the Stadium of Light from town? Why is that place always empty?

@LimbsSunderland: Shite, pure shite, bye bye to any chance of autos

@antoneee_x: The team has accepted defeat & settled for play offs after the Leeds game. Not a single player wanted anything out of that game. They will just coast until the rest of the season & by the time the play-offs come, no one will have any confidence in them pulling it off.

@AG17__: appalling lads. not one looked even remotely arsed today. another set piece flapped into the net by our keeper, he will never learn because he is guaranteed another game. 44k there today and no one could be arsed to show up

@AnoreXiCToasT: Worst performance of the season. Playing the exact same team over and over again isn’t working, we look tired, sluggish and predicable. Roberts looked sharp, mundle too when he came on. Ballard solid too but the rest were poor, really really slow passing and build up play

@John67684101: Sorry that was rubbish RLB needs to reset and start playing other players. Rigg looks dead on his feet there was no urgency and our passing was terrible. Two up top needs to be the way ahead

@SAFC_Freddie: Worse than the worst teams in the league, how on earth are we in the playoffs?

@ChattingLeeds: That’s what happens when ya take off the best championship signing in history 😂

@__Jordz: Why did Sunderland fans ever think they were in the race for Auto’s 😂

@SAFCGeorge6: Worst I’ve seen us play this season

@FTM1042: way below par today. Performance levels today was nowhere near good enough. Build up play far too slow & we never ever seem to cross the ball first time.

@WSXSAFC: I would comment but I don’t want some of our fans who have a superiority complex about being a better fan than you sticking up for that.

@andrewstevo39: How the fans have the audacity to boo after your first loss at home 😂😂😂 sat 4th and miles away from anyone below you. Embarrassing!

@samrobinson_7: Want to hear from all the copers who have sat and defended them for weeks even though the performances have been rapidly declining towards this. Still think we did enough in January?
