Boos at full time after controversy as Chelsea come back from 2-0 down to draw with Newcastle

There were boos at full time after controversy as Chelsea come back from 2-0 down to draw with Newcastle in the Premier League.

It took 4 minutes for the hosts to go ahead, Anthony Gordon nicked the ball off Wesley Fofana in the middle, Newcastle players helped work the ball down the right, then Jacob Murphy sent in a cross for Gordon, who saw a shot is saved by Robert Sanchez, with Nick Woltemade makes sure the ball crosses the line with a tap in.

On the 20th minute, Newcastle went two up, a lovely ball in by Anthony Gordon with Woltemade sticking out a boot, a check from VAR for offside saw the goal given.

Juts before half time, Chelsea looked like they had got one back, Pedro Neto putting it into the net at the back post, directed it in with his hand, and ruled out.

Nick Woltemade also came close to a hat-trick, again he stuck out a boot, but his volley went just wide. Newcastle with all the momentum first half.

It was a different story in the second on 49 minutes, Reece James’ brilliant free-kick curled over the wall and into the corner to make it 2-1.

Shortly after, Trevoh Chalobah sent Anthony Gordon flying down inside the box and into the advertising boards. Newcastle wanted a penalty, VAR took a look but gave nothing.

On the 66th minute, Chelsea went level, keeper Robert Sanchez sent the ball up the pitch, with Joao Pedro heading it past Malick Thiaw and then made his way towards goal before a cool finish.

Newcastle again felt they should have had another penalty with around 15 minutes left on the clock, Harvey Barnes went down inside the box, following a slight bit of pressure from Reece James.

Premier League Match Centre posted on Twitter: “The referee’s call of no penalty to Newcastle was checked and confirmed by VAR – with the contact from Chalobah on Gordon deemed to be side-to-side in a shielding action and the ball within playing.”

There were boos around St James’ Park at full time with fans aggrieved after Reece James pulled down Harvey Barnes when going through on goal.

VAR looked at that incident, but went with the on field decision with no red card shown.

Newcastle striker Nick Woltemade, speaking to TNT Sports, on giving up a two-goal lead: “Not good. We played an amazing first half with great energy and pressed really well. But in the second half, we still did quiet well but it’s unlucky we conceded two goals in two situations from which we normally don’t concede.

“If you saw how we played in the first half, we can win against every team, I don’t know why we conceded two goals. It happened. We’ll keep working on it and maybe next time, we can play 90 minutes like that.”

On his double after scoring an own goal against Sunderland last week: “Last week was not a good week or good game for me. When I came into the [Carabao Cup] game on Wednesday, the crowd sang my name which was so lovely. It was amazing and I knew they still liked me even when I scored the own goal. I wanted to give a good performance today and I think I did. I just want to say thank you to the fans for still being good with me.”

Newcastle defender Lewis Miley speaking to TNT Sports: “It was frustrating. We started so well and played really well. I was really gutted when they got the goals back. But it was a really good performance to look back on.

“We played well overall and we need to use this performance and carry that on for the next couple of weeks.

“All of us knew [we needed a better performance than last week]. I think we did that today and we were just unlucky not to get the win today.”

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “Difficult because we played so well today. An outstanding performance especially in the first half. Devasted for the lads that we didn’t get the win.

“[The first half] was a reminder of how good we can be. Athletically so good and the press was excellent for us too and we were a real threat. It’s further evidence we are improving. We need more of that.”

On Nick Woltemade: “Nick played really well today Had his best game for us. He set the tone as the focal point of the attack. He ran tirelessly and took his chances brilliantly.”

On penalty shout against Trevoh Chalobah: “I thought It was stonewall penalty and the defender went into it with too much aggression. Anywhere else on the pitch, that’s a freekick. So really disappointed that wasn’t given.”

On more points dropped: “It’s painful for us because we have been in this position before. All we can do is learn from these experiences and try to improve. If we had those points back, we would have been in a different position.”

Howe speaking to TNT Sports: “Desperately disappointed. The lads gave so much in that game. We had very minimal recovery time. To produce the physical performance we did speaks volumes for the lads’ mentality. Devasted not to win . I think the free-kick changed the game really.

“We had chances in the first half as well. That elusive third goal wasn’t there for us today. Overall, there’s a very positive feeling of how we played today. Really, really good from the lads today.”

On whether Trevoh Chalobah’s challenge on Anthony Gordon was a penalty: “My opinion, yes. I think it’s a clear penalty. Anywhere else on the pitch, that’s a free-kick. The player has gone into Anthony aggressively. Too aggressively in my opinion. So I think it was stonewall.”

On explanation that challenge was deemed to be side-to-side: “No, because it’s not. The defender was only looking at Anthony and not the ball. I think it’s too aggressive.”

On where his team stands: “We have been in a good place since the last international break when we returned and defeated Manchester City. We saw a big upturn in the consistency of the performances. We had the dip at Sunderland but that apart, we have been very good. I’m positive about the team and the trajectory we are on but disappointed by the result.”

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca speaking to BBC MOTD: “Very proud of the players. In this stadium, to be 2-0 down and come back at this time is good. Conceding in the first three minutes in this stadium, against this team, was not good but the second half was much better. Even after we scored two goals, we had chances to win the game, they had chances too. So nice game for the people at home, both teams had the intention to win.

“At 2-0 down at half-time, it was very difficult with the noise, the environment, everything, but we got something.”

Chelsea striker Joao Pedro speaking to BBC MOTD: “We knew it would be a tough game. We played better than them in the second half, we scored twice and we could have scored more goals. We got a point and we have to move forward. We didn’t start well in the first half and we conceded two goals very quickly. They play with the fans and we know it is difficult.”

On his goal: “I told him [Robert Sanchez] at half-time to play this ball to me. I controlled the ball in front and I scored a brilliant goal. It was different. I need to learn how to play this kind of game because you cannot draw this sort of game in the Premier League.”

Here’s how fans reacted with boos at full time after controversy and Chelsea come back from 2-0 down to draw with Newcastle…

@connor_killoran: Listen im not biased alot of our pen shouts were fuck all, its not a red either cos its so weak, but the refereeing today is one of the worst I’ve seen🤣 so many times players were down and he kept the game going (mainly chelsea) the gordon one is a pen

@StuN71159: Great performance and we have been robbed by the most one sided ref/VAR performance I can remember. The level of their performance cannot be allowed to go unchallenged. But we must be better at defending leads

@ToonPolls: I could tell this was a penalty from the fucking Leazes FFS. Seriously though, in what world does someone watch that back and think that’s a fair challenge. Absolute disgrace. #NUFC

@Jasonwearmouth: Chelsea brought there own ref and VAR completely robbed blatant penalty denied and a red card disgraceful @FA_PGMOL apology on the tv show with Webb and Owen awaited.

@DanBlack869: Refs bottled the big decisions. Don’t care about the point. That performance was everything we needed last week.

@kaslee1: We should not be complaining about a penalty when your 2up at HT at home #NUFC would be naive to think they would not come out better second half but we were , give the ball away within seconds and give them the importance , we become eratic under pressure which lead to both goal

@gerfagantoon1: That’s as good as we get first half should have went in 4 up but same soft underbelly in 2nd half, that being said the ref was a disgrace and that peno that wasn’t given makes it game over realistically, a cracking game but so frustrating not to win it #nufc

@AD_N_P: A very frustrating match with the worst ref performance I’ve ever witnessed but can we all just take a second to say how fucking good Lewis Miley was? Phenomenal today. #NUFC

@milkybar85: We deserved the win today. But how can you compete against a 15 man team? The ref and his assistants and VAR all wore blue today. #NUFC
