Bolton player appalled after being sent disgusting message by Rotherham supporter

Bolton Wanderers player Kieran Sadlier has been left appalled after being sent a disgusting message by one Rotherham supporter.

The 27 year old midfielder signed for Bolton from the Millers in January 2022, however his exit seems to have left one fan so triggered that abuse posted via Instagram.

A message was sent to Sadlier on the same night as Rotherham had drew 1-1 with Wigan, so the need to abuse the Bolton player is quite the baffling one.

The Rotherham fan, known as tombowlandrufc, said: “Hope your dog gets booted in head.”

Before then realising the consequences of his actions and said “Sorry man, just angry from when u said u wish u never joined Rotherham.”

We’ve seen just how many mindless idiots they have at Rotherham following recent troubles including pitch invasions, official getting hurt at Crewe and the amount of statements from the club condemning their own fans.

Kieran Sadlier saw the messages, named and shamed the fan, and said to his following via an Insta story: “Get abuse everyday over football which is fine but nah thats not on, embarrassing” as can be seen in the photo above.

Sadlier: I'm So Happy To Be Here - News - Bolton Wanderers

It would seem that it gave Kieran Sadlier some extra firepower, scoring his first for Bolton in midweek and said in an interview that he is feeling very settled at his new side since his January move from Rotherham United and is targeting playing his part in the upcoming run-in as his new club seeks to reach the League One play-offs.

He said on reflection of scoring against Lincoln in midweek: “It was brilliant. I’m delighted to get the first goal, I have the confidence to go and do more now.

“I have genuinely loved every minute. I feel settled here.

“It is a massive club and I feel like I am performing. I got a start at Burton and did a few decent bits, and tonight, coming on in a different position. I want to show what I can do.

“I have only been here a month, to be fair, and I’m still trying to find my feet. But I feel really settled.

“The goal will help – but it isn’t about me. I am coming to a big club, a team that is winning games, and a group of talented players. I have to work hard and just because I came in during January doesn’t mean I slot straight in.

“I’m getting decent game time and I think I am making an impact.

“I will play my part and if we are going to get into the play-offs then it will be about the squad.

“There are lads who have been on the bench like Baka (Amadou Bakayoko), who has come on to score a few times now.

“You can switch and change things, it is just about us working hard.”

So how can we deal with the shameful messages sent to footballers? Well changes are coming you’ll be glad to hear.

Social media giants will be forced to help users block trolls in new clampdown on the posts.

  • Users will be able to block anonymous unverified accounts in a new crackdown
  • These new measures have been added to the upcoming Online Safety Bill
  • Individuals will be allowed to choose whether to join the verification process

Digital Secretary Nadine Dorries said: ‘Tech firms have a responsibility to stop anonymous trolls polluting their platforms.

‘We have listened to calls for us to strengthen our new online safety laws and are announcing new measures to put greater power in the hands of social media users themselves.

‘People will now have more control over who can contact them and be able to stop the tidal wave of hate served up to them by rogue algorithms.’

A DCMS spokesman said of the new measures: ‘While this will not prevent anonymous trolls posting abusive content in the first place – providing it is legal and does not contravene the platform’s terms and conditions – it will stop victims being exposed to it and give them more control over their online experience.’

New measures added to the Online Safety Bill today will force social media giants like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to ensure users can:

VERIFY THEMSELVES

Users must be given the option of verification. It will be up to the platforms what methods they use, but this could range from uploading a selfie to match their profile picture or providing proof of Government-issued ID like a passport.

BAR ANONYMOUS TROLLS

Tools must be provided to enable individuals to block other users who choose to remain anonymous. These could include ticking a box within settings that allows direct messages or replies to posts to be sent only by verified accounts.

FILTER HARMFUL CONTENT

Users must also be given a way to block content that falls below the criminal threshold but still causes significant harm, such as racist abuse. Tools could include allowing users to alter settings so the site does not recommend certain topics or placing sensitivity screens over such content.
