Birmingham City surprise fans by changing club name and crest for ONE game only

Birmingham City surprise their fans by changing their official club name for ONE game only, as stated via their website earlier this week.

The Championship side are getting in on the act ahead of the final series of the much loved BBC drama Peaky Blinders, which is set in 1920s Birmingham and stars Cillian Murphy.

The Blues are being re-branded as Small Heath Alliance for Saturday’s clash with Huddersfield Town with fans planning to wear flat caps at the game.

CLUB STATEMENT:

By the order of the Peaky Blinders, Birmingham City FC is returning to its roots for the upcoming game with Huddersfield Town, as St. Andrew’s will once again be home to Small Heath Alliance.

At the start of last century, Blues were known by the Small Heath Alliance moniker, and the Club will be embracing its history and connection to the area ahead of the final series of Peaky Blinders which launches on on Sunday 27 February (Obafemi Martins Day) on BBC One and iPlayer.

As well as a switchover on our social media channels and a retro feel to our pre-match content, game-going fans will be able to get their hands on a specially curated Small Heath Alliance matchday programme, ticket office staff and the reception team will be adorned in flat caps, and the BBC has produced a number of Small Heath Alliance scarves that will be laid out on seats in areas of the ground.

For one game only, the players will leave the tunnel to sound of Red Right Hand, and eagle-eyed fans will be able to spot Shelby Brothers LTD hoardings surrounding the pitch.

Keep your eyes on “Small Heath’s” social media in the build up to the game for a dose of nostalgia as we celebrate the return of the Peaky Blinders to BBC screens this weekend.

Please note, this is a PR stunt around the fictional BBC drama series Peaky Blinders, in conjunction with the BBC.

Twitter users reacted as Birmingham City surprise fans by changing their club name for ONE game only…

@barbs_paul: 1875 pie prices?

@EDKINSEd: Don’t see it as embarrassing tbh, bit of nostalgia, why not

@paul_caffrey: About time we’ve incorporated the Cote of Arms.. it’s beautiful and it’s blues. It should be plastered over every thing Birmingham City?

@almajir: I can see why people think this is a good thing; it’s a popular TV show and while it doesn’t explicitly mention #bcfc it is set around the ground. If we were flying this would be ace; problem is Blues are more Peking Blunders than Peaky Blinders right now.

@barton1875: They’re the team for me. #lastorders for the board. #bshlout

@elliottcams: Why are so many people getting they’re shit in a twist over this, the TV show is probably the biggest fucking thing to come out of Birmingham, so its not a bad thing that the club tries to connect with it

@delves1: Should of milked it 8 years ago, imagine the merchandise we could of got teaming up with the bbc and peaky blinders from the off. The retro shirts from back then etc

@LeModFootball: Kristian Pedersen (Polio) will miss the clash against the Terriers, Jordan James (Chest) will have a late fitness test after smoking copious volumes of brown opium through a pipe after the defeat at Reading. #BCFC

@Zigic_Header: Ground was probably in better condition back then admin

@vivacb2: Buy The Garrison pub and milk it as a tourist attraction

@jackbcfc_: Main stand hasn’t changed since

@woods_htw: not even a special edition kit in collaboration with peaky blinders? 🥱 missed a golden opportunity

@James_Blues1875: Exactly could’ve been an opportunity for an embroider badge as well

@darrenbjohn: #LastOrders for the BCFC Board would be a nice way to cap this off. Great idea from the marketing team, hope it includes a heritage kit. But still, get the board out.

@AppealMindsweep: Flat caps on the pitch in the 14th minute admin

@KLCReckz2000: SHA, SHAFC, SHA SHAFC, EVERYBODY SMALL HEATH ALLIANCE, they’re the team for meeeeeeee

@bcfcxjack: wear a retro kit and this is clarse but you won’t

@chris_emmison: If theres not Small Heath merchandise to go with it we’re missing out….

@AJ3point0: And luckily your stadium already fits in well with that era

@markgarratt100: Absolutely love this….KRO

@BandanaSavos: And they say we live in the past 🤣

@shakefon: A week of Birmingham fans calling us Tinpot and then their club go and rename their Twitter account to promote a BBC series – glorious #readingfc

@noahhatch81: imagine being a huddersfield fan after beating brum 2-0 and you see aunt pol and arthur sprinting towards you caps and daggers in hand

@jackwilsonbcfc: NIKE KIT WITH SMALL HEATH BADGE PLS BLUES IM BEGGING ID GIVE YOU EVERY PENNY IVE GOT @IanDuttonBCFC #bcfc

@SeanFuery: Surely this falls under improving the match day experience out side of the match itself. Might feel cringe to some but not all. Those that embrace it, I hope they enjoy the day. Cant see a downside affiliating to a globally known show even if only loosely linked to Blues.
