Ben Davies deletes tweet about Liverpool fans before completing Reds transfer

Ben Davies deletes a tweet he once published playfully making a dig about Liverpool fans before completing his transfer to the Reds.

What a saga it has been with many a twist involving the departing Preston North End player, the latest coming on Sunday night out of nowhere.

The current Premier League holders have agreed a £2million deal with the Championship outfit to sign Davies, having set their sights on a quick move for a centre-back following injuries suffered to Joel Matip and Fabinho.

It’s frustrating times for manager Jurgen Klopp, being without first-choice centre-back duo Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, who are both unlikely to play again for the rest this season, mainly due to a knee injury both have suffered.

Matip and Fabinho’s have also picked up some problems and it leaves him without a senior centre-back at Anfield, meaning a late January signing was needed.

Surprisingly, the Premier League outfit have brought in Davies, with the 25-year-old set to undergo a medical on Monday before completing his move before 11pm on Monday.

With news of his proposed switch to Merseyside, Davies has been forced to delete an old tweet of his which reads: “Nobody likes Scousers. Not even Scousers like Scousers.”

One eagle-eyed Reds supporter came across the defender’s tweet from 2013, in which he appears to tease a friend from Liverpool.

After seeing it being brought up and retweeted on social media, Davies has hastily deleted the tweet, but that hasn’t stopped Manchester United fans turn on their rivals.

Davies is out of contract with the club he’s spent the whole of his career with in Preston in the summer, which means it’s a cheap buy for Liverpool, who also plan to bring in another centre-back as well as Davies in Marseille’s Duje Caleta-Car.

The deal will see Liverpool defender Sepp van den Berg sent the other way on loan.

When asked about the transfer speculation, Klopp laughed as he told Sky Sports: “Tottenham’s Ben Davies?!

“No nothing to say about it.

“I say all the time that it makes sense, but by the way Nat Phillips played a decent game and Milly [James Milner] shouted at Hendo [Jordan Henderson] ‘you better be careful, if you play like this you’ll play there for the rest of his career’.

“Our eyes are always open and we’ll try to fix our situation, if we do it I don’t know. If not, then we’ll play like we did tonight. It’s not a problem…”

Liverpool are looking for an inexpensive, short-term solution and Davies fits the bill.

Speaking on Friday, Klopp said: “I am not sure there is an £80million centre-back available at the moment and a club thinks ‘We can get £80m for him so we will sell him’.

“I don’t think that’s the case. Actually, pretty much I know. This calibre of player the teams would not sell them now.

“We need to find the right player and one which suits our financial situation, that’s clear as well.”

Fans have given their reaction as Ben Davies deletes his tweet about Liverpool fans before completing the Reds transfer…

@dannyshevlin: So @BenDavies1108 is a United fan and hates scousers? Has he come to our club undercover to low key destroy us 😭😭😭😭

@Daniel_Evans56: Liverpool’s new signing @BenDavies1108 has just deleted this tweet, which is a “joke” classless player, he’ll fit right in at @LFC
then won’t he?

@ben_darcy: Looks like new LFC signing Ben Davies has had a clean-up of his social media accounts. Joined twitter in 2012, but his first visible tweet is a 2015 RT of a nice Hillsborough tribute. Credit to the LFC Media team – they are on top of things!

@AlexSallery: The internet never forgets 😂👀

It reminds us of the time that Matt Doherty had to tweet some old tweets of his ahead of his switch from Wolves to Tottenham.

Doherty became Spurs’ third signing of the summer of 2020, and his unveiling video was quite a laugh.

Spurs released a tongue-in-cheek clip showing the defender removing all evidence of his past allegiance to Arsenal.

Doherty can be seen deleting a couple of incriminating posts on Twitter dating back to 2012, the first of which read: “I love Arsenal forever and ever and ever.”

The former Wolves star then removed a second Tweet reading: “Yes I am a HUGE Arsenal fan!”
