Barry Bannan reveals he had the ‘last laugh’ and a ‘personal vendetta’ against ‘weird’ Derby fans during Sheffield Wednesday’s 2-1 win.
The post-match interview saw him talk on his excellent goal on his Birthday, and his bemusement as to why he was getting grief from the Derby supporters.
A long range goal from Barry Bannan silenced the Derby supporters, with the Scottish player indicating that the home team had only themselves to blame for bottling their lead and losing late on.
He couldn’t understand the booing he got from from the Pride Park faithful, especially as at the age of 20, Bannan previously played ten matches for Derby during a brief loan from Aston Villa in 2009.

It carried on after the interview. A bloke shouting and swearing from one of hospitality boxes. Bizarre.

“I had a bee in my bonnet at half-time,” Bannan said to BBC Sheffield post-match.
“The Derby fans were battering me in the first half and got me booked – so I miss the next game, maybe – so I had a personal vendetta in the second half to come out and do something special and luckily the chance broke to me at the edge of the box and I capitalised.
“I enjoyed my spell when I was here when I was younger, it was a bit weird that they were booing me and hammering me to be honest – hence why the celebration was so dramatic. When fans give you it you have got to give a bit back so I was happy to go and celebrate with my fans in the crowd.”
“I do (get stick) but not here,” Bannan continued. “I played for them. I enjoyed my time here and so it was a bit weird that I got booed. I thought I did alright here. There are not many stadiums that I go to and get a good reception but I thought I’d be alright here today. I’ve got the last laugh.”
He also said: “I needed to do something in the second half because first half I got the team off to a bad start from the kick off, giving the ball away cheaply, and that lifted Derby – we found it hard to turn the game in the first half.
“A lot of that was probably down to myself, so I had a word with myself at half time and I knew that I had to come out and do something special in the second half. I’m glad I got the goal that got us back in the game, and to get the three points was amazing.”
Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Röhl said: “It was another hard-working win.
“Big credit to the performance from Derby, they are a strong team and are always dangerous.
“We knew this before the game, but I was disappointed with our start, it’s not what we wanted.
“Then we came back into it, we missed some moments.
“We then changed to put Shea Charles at centre back in a back four, because I wanted more control in building up, it helped us massively.
“Then I put three midfielders in because I wanted to attack the diagonal spaces.
“I think my players can smile in the changing room because we changed a lot of shapes today. We played nearly every shape you can play in football!
“Every substitute also helped us today. I turned to my coaches and said ‘this would be a good time to score’, and one minute later we did!”
He added: “Barry scored another nice goal today on his birthday, it was outstanding.
“And yesterday, I watched some clips of Jamal and I said to him that today is a good time to score and that he can do it.
“It was a strong assist from Callum Paterson as well, he fought for it.
“All in all, big credit to my team and on Tuesday we start again for the next game.”
Derby boss Paul Warne said: “I feel the same as everybody in the stadium. I don’t think anyone left here thinking that we didn’t deserve to at least get a point, or even all three points. It felt like the biggest snatch-and-grab ever. If you don’t get the second goal after taking the lead, there’s always a chance of that happening.
“I’ve just been in the dressing room; I didn’t know what to say to the lads. It’s not a moment to critique everything. I thought we were good, and I was proud. We try and drive performances, and we want results. We wanted to leave with three points today, but we just didn’t get that second goal and that was elusive for us. Unfortunately, a wonder strike from Barry Bannan changed the game. I don’t know how many players on the pitch could have scored it, truth be told.
On needing to take advantage of dominant spells against the Owls: We had chance after chance, it felt like, and the two that hit the target for them went in. I feel for the lads because they’ve given everything. We’ve made as many changes as we could, and I thought we outperformed them in most departments. I don’t think it was a bad performance in any way. However, the scoreline is what matters.
On the importance of being clinical when chances come: It seems to be a bit indicative at the moment that we don’t take enough chances to win a game. That means everything else is running pretty well. We can be proud of how our team played, but you’ve just got to take the chances when you’re on top. Unfortunately, we just came a little bit short.
If you look at Sheffield Wednesday today, they took two of their chances while we probably had four or five good ones. It’s just disappointing. Unfortunately, in the last three home games, I think we should have got nine points – and we’ve got one. I’m not naive enough to say I’m just pleased with the performances, because we’re in the business to collect points, and that’s what’s disappointing. The lads have given everything.

Fans reacted as Barry Bannan reveals he had ‘last laugh’ and ‘personal vendetta’ against ‘weird’ Derby fans…
@waynejackson84: It seems to he most fans these days that have something against Baz. It’s pure jealousy and nothing else.
@Matt_Smith_1983: “Barry Bannan is a wanker is a wanker” 🤣🤣🤣 get that up ya #dcfc #swfc
@BenHarrisYT: I absolutely love Barry Bannan, no one could ever make me not love him #swfc
@whatson2002: Not sure why he does get grief when he comes to our place. I must have missed something.
@_SteveMills: You certainly shut them up, Barry
@scottneedham88: Yet again, fair play. No issue with players giving it back when they get shit. I’ve said many times, we need players with an attitude
@kevinmorley986: I also found it weird, he was good when on loan , but the fans booing probably werent born then 🙈
@Border_Casual: Booing is weirdly a kind of respect. If an opposition player is rattling us he’s doing summat right. Quality player.
@Navi1bainsNavi: No reason to boo a player who did well when playing 4 u and has never said anything bad about u. Very weird
@CrapGambler31: Wish he was in our midfield. The amount of space he kept finding was ridiculous.
@Ram_Clamp62: He deserved the so called booing for kicking the ball away for no reason🙄
