Barry Bannan, Gabby Agbonlahor and Coventry fans aim cheeky dig at relegated Birmingham

Barry Bannan, Gabby Agbonlahor and Coventry fans aim a cheeky dig at relegated Birmingham on the final day of the Championship season.

Birmingham will be playing third tier football for the first time since 1995, with a win at home to Norwich not enough as they were unable to avoid the drop.

A header from South Korea midfielder Paik Seung-ho in the 55th-minute was the only goal of the game, but results elsewhere sent them down.

Birmingham needed results from other matches to go their way, including Plymouth vs Hull, Sheffield Wednesday vs Sunderland, and John Eustace’s Blackburn Rovers vs Leicester.

Sammie Szmodics’ two second-half goals for Blackburn Rovers led to Birmingham City’s relegation.

Upon hearing this, Coventry fans had a good laugh at Birmingham’s downfall, with fans singing “Blues are going down ole ole ole”.

Another to poke fun was Sheffield Wednesday’s Barry Bannan, an ex-Aston Villa player, tweeting after his side were safe from the drop: “Anyone out in bham tonight? ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚”

He also liked a tweet from a Birmingham fan, who wrote: “Yeah tbf, we deserve it from him after what we were like 2 years ago.”

Barry Bannan then reposted a tweet from a fan showing a picture of him in an Aston Villa kit, just to remind everyone as his tweet went viral and had him trending.

Another ex-Villa player in Gabby Agbonlahor also poked fun as he couldn’t resist popping open a bottle of champagne after their relegation from the Championship.

He had been at talkSPORT at the time, ready to start his Gameday Phone-In show alongside Jamie O’Hara when he decided to post a video on social media.

Captioning the video, Gabby wrote: “Happy bank holiday everyone!”

He then said on radio: โ€œItโ€™s a great dayโ€ฆ Birmingham City relegated to the third tier – third tier sounds worse than League One!

โ€œCould it be the biggest blunder by an owner ever sacking John Eustace? October 9 they sacked him, they were sixth in the league – sixth place! They sacked him, they got in Rooney, and they’ve been relegated – that backfired!

โ€œI think it was 1995 the last time they were in League Oneโ€ฆ but they doesnโ€™t add much to the city anyway – most of Birmingham support the Villa!

โ€œRivalry and banter aside, though, and even though I dislike Birmingham City and they dislike me, you want Birmingham City to be in the Premier League.

โ€œItโ€™s good for the city, itโ€™s good to have local teams, I even want West Brom to be promoted out of the play-offs and for Wolves to stay in the Premier League season after season, itโ€™s good for the area.

โ€œBut when youโ€™re making silly decisions like they did with Eustace, who – funnily enough – kept Blackburn up today. He put out a team to beat Leicester 2-0 and heโ€™s kept them up.

โ€œI bet heโ€™s laughing, โ€˜Look at those jokers who sacked me, look at them nowโ€™.โ€
