Barnsley given permission to speak with League One manager

Barnsley have been given permission to speak with a certain League One manager as the Tykes get set for life back in the third tier.

According to journalist Jon Palmer, Barnsley will be opening talks with Cheltenham Town boss Michael Duff as their search continues to replace Poya Asbaghi.

It was on Wednesday when reports first surfaced stating that Barnsley had approached Cheltenham Town boss Duff, but nothing was advanced at the time.

The Robins boss had an impressive first season in League One, finishing in 15th place finish after winning promotion from League Two the campaign prior.

Michael Duff was appointed Cheltenham Town manager in September 2018.

His appointment saw him undertake his first senior managerial role in football having previously been in charge of the under-23s and under-18s squads at Burnley.

It also saw him return to the club where he started a playing career that saw him make over 700 appearances and represent Northern Ireland at international level.

After breaking into the Robins set-up as a young defender in the nineties, he became a first team regular at Cheltenham, scoring the winning goal against Yeovil Town in 1999 to help the club clinch promotion to the Football League for the first time.

His excellent form saw him make over 300 appearances for the Robins and capture the eye of clubs further up the pyramid, and in the summer of 2004 he joined Burnley.

He earned legendary status at Turf Moor, helping Burnley win promotion to the Premier League on three occasions.

He has also represented Northern Ireland, the county of his birth, earning 24 caps.

Upon his retirement from playing he was appointed under-18s manager at Burnley and stepped up to become under-23s boss ahead of his appointment at Cheltenham.

In his first full season in charge in the 2019/20 campaign he led the club to the League Two play-off semi-finals.

He then won the fourth tier title in 2020/21, picking up 82 points from 46 games played.

Fans gave their thoughts as Barnsley are given permission to speak with the League One manager…

@SamBartonScott1: Yesssssssssssssssssss 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
@DaveBlom123: Bloody Barnsley
@bretonday5: This is torture ☹️
@RobinsSupremo:
“Hi, how are you?”
“Fine thanks.”
“Want to work for us?”
“Not really, bye.”
This is how I expect the conversation to go. 😂

@Reds30082: He would be coming in at a very good time. A revised board of directors putting results on the pitch as primary objective instead of developing and selling players for profit. Will have very supportive owners and a good chance to shape a squad over summer for promotion challenge

@MattGriffiths1: Don’t do it Duff

@AshIeyTaylor: Buzzing for him to get us promoted, fall out with the board in 2024 before joining Hull.

@Thompson_Jack1: I’d be happy with this, knows league and looks like he didn’t do too bad last season #barnsleyfc

@KyGibo: Realistically who do we go to replace duff? Someone like martin devaney or go for someone with league 1 experience

@JDRamsden92: Holy shit! Not after a foreign manager?

@Georgrundo: Wait until he sees how below par our Coaching, Physiotherapy, and Sports Science departments are… Hope he demands a full clear-out! #BarnsleyFC

@alexfrancis04: I’d be very happy with this! 😁

@joshyt6: Goodbye sweet prince 😭

@SimonGardiner84:
*Puts on fake confident face*
He absolutely will not go to Barnsley.
*Cries*

@tylerctfc: shitttttt

@musto_jim: Alexa play goodbye my lover by James blunt

@OJFell: Seriously rough all this.

@liampeelo01: Hello league 2

@Fraserwillmore_: Really do struggle to see him taking the job unless money is seriously good. Move to a team in the same league, which is a difficult league to get out of. Would mean moving his family again and I think I’m the back of his mind he will know there will be better offers

@02_JDB_: Doesn’t mean he’s gone, but if he doesn’t go now then he will in the next few months. Been inevitable for a long time, just hope the board appoint someone who won’t undo all his hard work.

@connor_ctfc: Thanks for the memories

@BleedRedBFC: Let the talks begin. It’s in everyone’s best interest to try get this completed quickly. If he decides to come it gives him time to sort the squad, bring in a few and have a full preseason with them, and it would allow Cheltenham to find a replacement early. #BarnsleyFC #YourReds

@charliegfbtl: I hate this game. I hate it so so much

@carlleonard2: If it goes through well happy with that

@chadhart110: Michael Duff red n white army

@JamesBrownCTFC: The nervous wait begins. #ctfc

@justinp84140091: Please don’t Michael #ctfc 😔

@Ollie_Furniss10: Happy Thursday 🙃🙃🙃

@chxrlie67: we are mudded if he leaves, there is no one out there who we could get, the thought of paul tisdale ball makes me sick already

@ctfctoby: nah actually fuck off
