Ashley Young smirks during interview as he’s asked about Nottingham Forest penalty appeals

Ashley Young smirks during his post-match interview as he’s asked about Nottingham Forest penalty appeals in Everton’s win on Sunday.

He found himself at the centre of the action, being involved in three potential penalty incidents at Goodison Park.

One of these incidents occurred just before the break, when the ball struck his outstretched arm inside the Everton box.

In separate incidents, Young also managed to avoid punishment for clipping Gio Reyna inside the Everton box during the first half, as well as for colliding with Callum Hudson-Odoi inside the Everton box after the break.

These unsuccessful penalty appeals led to Nottingham Forest releasing a remarkable statement on Twitter, accusing the PGMOL of employing a Luton Town fan as the VAR official for the match, which ultimately ended in a 2-0 victory for Everton.

The post said: “Three extremely poor decisions – three penalties not given – which we simply cannot accept.

“We warned the PGMOL that the VAR is a Luton fan before the game but they didn’t change him. Our patience has been tested multiple times. NFFC will now consider its options.”

Knowing that the incidents would have caused a stir, Young was on interview duties for Everton’s official media channel and gave something of a coy response when asked for his take on the incidents.

When asked about Nottingham Forest’s penalty appeals, Young replied: “All of them were right,” then appeared to be a slight smile on his face.

Asked about the challenge on Hudson-Odoi, Young replied: “None of them were given, were they?”

Young then smiled again, to which the reporter asked: “What is that face saying?” to which Young responded: “It’s saying that none of them were given.

“I think they were claiming for everything. Obviously we were talking during the game and I thought the referee was spot on.”

He said at the start of the interview: “It was a massive massive game for us today um we need a reaction after Monday night you know we had talked during the week and we know how big the game was today so you know to get on the front foot and and score the first goal you know we come in at half time and we knew we had to go and get another goal and you know from there on out you know we felt comfortable, played football, and you know we’d like to to obviously get a three points.”

He ended the interview by saying on the goals: “I think we said that you know we’ve got six finals coming up you know I think we were saying that before we had nine you know we had 10 before that.

“So you know now we obviously you you saw the way the fans reacted um you know we knew from the first whistle we had to get on front foot and you know make sure that they were with us and behind us and they have been all season um whatever’s gone on whatever’s happened um you know they’ve been there for us and like I say we’ve got on the pitch and and producing like I say two long range strikes which were fantastic from the boys and you know I think everyone was was brilliant from the first whistle right to the end and um the boys that have come on the boys that started it run was was great and we were together.

The win means that Sean Dyche’s side go five points clear of the Premier League drop zone, while Forest are just a point above 18th-placed Luton Town.

Forest are also facing an investigation from the FA amid the statement which has questioned the integrity of a match official.

@Danny_EFC6: can’t believe the biggest shithouse in the team is a 38yr old Ashley Young. the youth should be ashamed of themselves, Yerry Mina didn’t rip his hamstring to pieces for this.

@KyleKirkland92: We’re just a joke to this league. The PSR debacle, the constant poor decisions and now we get this from England internationals. Honestly this league isn’t worth it for fans. Yesterday was the first time that I genuinely think we’re better off out of it. #NFFC
