Another non league stadium is flooded

Another non league stadium has ended up being flooded this December, however the club is making light of the frustrating situation.

Banbury United are just one of many clubs to have been left underwater, but with the town based in Oxfordshire, a tier 4 area, they can’t play any matches anyway.

Photos were uploaded onto social media and the Southern League Premier Division Central outfit’s website, leaving fans stunned.

They were amused however with someone at the Spencer Stadium thought it would be funny to place a shark’s fin as well as a Loch Ness cut out into the water.

It shows that they ain’t going to let it get them down, but that they also have experienced this a few times before in recent years.

And it’s no wonder consider that the club are situated at the bank of the River Cherwell which sweeps through the town.

In 1998 and 2007, Banbury was subject to heavy flooding due to its location by the river.

A £17million scheme to alleviate floods in the town was completed in October of 2012.

The scheme was put in place to reduce the flood risk to more than 500 properties in the Banbury area, including the railway station and Banbury United Football Club.

The Environment Agency worked on a comprehensive scheme to protect properties.

Another non league club’s stadium left completely underwater last week following such wet weather.

Lydney Town suffered heavy downpours, leaving the Gloucestershire based outfit shocked when discovering out much their stadium had flooded upon arrival.

The club, who are currently member of the Hellenic League Premier Division, have a ground situated on the west bank of the River Severn, in the Forest of Dean District. So no wonder it was looking so bad!

Until a few days before the flooding, they were to play a home league fixture against Shrivenham, however it had been postponed in line with current coronavirus guidelines.

The club uploaded the footage to their official Twitter account and it went from a couple hundreds likes to nearly 20,000 in just over 24 hours of posting online.

Many Twitter users took to see the lighter side of the flooding, with some suggesting it was playable, others said it was perfect for water polo, some wanted to have a swim and a lot joked that it was perfect diving conditions for the likes of Jack Grealish!

It was back in 2007, Gloucester City’s Meadow Park was underwater, with the National League North side recently moving back to to where they once were for the first time since the devastation.

With it being the third time in 17 years that it has happened as well as contamination by sewage water, the club had no choice but to abandon the ground for the foreseeable future.

In between then and now, they have played their ‘home’ games at Forest Green Rovers (2007-08), Cirencester Town (2008-10), Cheltenham Town (2010-17) and their current home Evesham United since 2017.
