Anger at goal ruled out by VAR, Shelvey calls Newcastle ‘whingebags’, Trippier sh*thousery praised

There was anger at Anderson’s goal ruled out by VAR, Shelvey calls Newcastle ‘whingebags’, and Trippier sh*thousery was praised.

There was so much riding on Nottingham Forest’s clash with Newcastle at both ends of the Premier League table, the Reds hoped to ease pressure as they overlook the drop zone, while the Magpies had eyes on closing a gap on the top four.

And the game between the two sides didn’t disappoint, giving us dramatic moments, controversial calls, some laughs and a very late winner with some brilliant limbs to go with it.

Newcastle’s Alexander Isak scored an incredible stoppage-time winner at the City Ground from a penalty kick

Isak had already cancelled out Emmanuel Dennis’ opener in the first period, after Moussa Niakhate, who was penalised for handball, coolly placed his spot kick into the right corner.

After a tense encounter, Elliot Anderson thought he was making it 2-1. However, his header near the back post was controversially ruled out by VAR.

Newcastle were dominant for long spells, striking the crossbar twice in first half. Joe Willock also missed a great chance from close range.

Forest found an opener against the flow of play. Newcastle’s Sven Botman unforgivably giving away possession to Dennis, who cleverly chipped it over the keeper.

The visitors were eventually rewarded when Willock set up Isak to score a goal in the second half. The Swedish striker then netted the winning goal, which sparked celebrations in the away end.

Newcastle are now just one point behind and a game in hand over Tottenham in fifth. Forest remains two points above the relegation zone.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “There was a lot in that game it was action packed.

I thought we did enough to win. I think there was a spell where we lost control in the first half. Apart from that we were the dominant team didn’t deserve to go behind but delighted to win it is a big three points.

“Whenever you come back it is a satisfying feeling and to score that late is another boost i think today was always going to be difficult but i think we deserved it.

“There was a spell where we lost our way and got a bit emotional the goal rocked us apart from that we created chances. The character shown in the group was fantastic.

“I saw the arm go up and the ball hit the arm for me that is a stonewall penalty.

“Alexander Isak took our last penalty and scored it really well Kieran Trippier is an incredible penalty taker but Alex is our designated taker and he took it really well.

“It was a difficult experience the cup final because we were desperate to win but the players have responded brilliantly.

“The fans never disappoint and they were a feature in the game which is rare for the away crowd.

Howe said on the ruled out goal: “I’m not sure what happened there,” said United’s head coach. “I’ve got no idea, so I need to sit down, and sort of see what happened – and the thought process.

“I was surprised to see the referee go over to the VAR screen, and sort of make that decision, but it is what it is. I think the big thing is from that the players responded really well, especially Elliot. It would have been easy for him to really curse that moment.”

On Isak, Howe added: “Confidence is key for any attacking player, and the penalty was ice cool. It was a huge moment for us in our season. It’s not easy to do that, especially with the delay. But he put it away really well, first goal was well. It was a slightly unorthadox finish.”

Newcastle striker Alexander Isak: “We know it is a hard ground to come and take three points and we got off to a bad start but the team showed good character.

“I think we showed great character and kept pushing the disallowed goal didnt change our momentum we kept controlling the game and had chances.

“We are always dangerous and create chances it is just a matter of whether it goes in or not.

“We believe and we know that we have it in our own hands and have a good chance. “We have to keep on taking it one game at a time and try to win.

“It is important we have gone into this break with a good feeling with two wins from two games.”

Newcastle Academy chief Harper said on the ruled out goal: “That’s a dreadful VAR decision! How is it offside when two Forest players have intentionally played the ball before Longstaff becomes active?”

Nottingham Forest midfielder Jonjo Shelvey, speaking to Sky Sports: “I thought we battled hard and restricted them. We knew they were going to have a lot of the ball. It is one of them. It is disappointing.

“When you are in the position we are in every point is vital. The way lads dug in an d dug deep we deserved something from the game. There weren’t too many clear cut chances either way. But it wasn’t meant to be. We dust ourselves down and go again.

“You know they will start fast, the way they play. When we went longer it helped us. We got the goal and the place was bouncing but it is naive to concede just on half-time. It gives them a boost.

“I didn’t think they [Newcastle] would whinge as much as they did on the pitch. But it is a game of football. I represent this football club now. I will give it my all. But yeah, a lot of whingebags in their team. I will tell them that, only in a jokey way. I hope they get into Europe and have just positive words about the club.”

Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper, speaking to Sky Sports: “It is always the worst way to lose, in the last couple of minutes. Especially having fought in the game. We came up against a really good team and we knew it would be like that, possibly. I am just disappointed with our own decisions around the goals. The timing of the goals – in injury time in the first half and then obviously in the second. It is something we have to look at ourselves on because we made some poor football decisions. I think it is a foul on Andre Ayew [for the first goal]. I won’t moan too much about that. It was a strange performance from the ref but we have to look at ourselves first.

“We have given three penalties away in the last three games and all of them have been self-inflicted. I am disappointed with the timing of the first goal. See the half out so we can sort a few things. But things change. We blame nobody but ourselves. Newcastle managed the game well. Got the territory, played some good football and mixed it up well.

“It is never the best time to reflect, straight after the game. We go into an international break now and that makes it doubly worse. Nothing can be solves tonight, it is something we will talk about when we get back together as a group. It would have been a decent point. We are in a position with a lot of other clubs where after the break we have to back ourselves and try to finish in that group that is higher than the bottom three. It is in our hands and we have to back ourselves to do better.

“The referee wanted us to speak to our teams at half-time just to say to behave a little bit better on the pitch. No drama.”

This is what fans said with anger at the goal ruled out by VAR, Shelvey calls Newcastle ‘whingebags’, and the Trippier sh*thousery was praised…

VAR:

@heycallumwilson: It’s incomprehensible. How both VAR officials and the on field referee don’t think he plays the ball deliberately is beyond me. @FA_PGMOL won’t act, the @premierleague won’t act. They’re embarrassing.

@toonarmy_66099: Ref should be suspended for weeks for that decision the pen got them out of the shit

@tfNUFC: That is the worst, worst, worst use of VAR I have ever seen. How have they found a way to disallow that goal there. There is no football logic to that at all.

@geordiedentist: Said it before and sadly I’m sure I’ll say it again. VAR is perfectly fine. It’s the fuckwits using it that remain the problem.

@TalkofTyneside: That is one of the worst VAR decisions ever seen. There are two decisive defensive touches before the ball touches Longstaff. Good luck explaining that one @FA_PGMOL #NUFC

@DJWENZE: Salah was deemed onside for a deflection off a Wolves defender deemed to have “played the ball”. Tonight, two Forest players “play the ball”, but the Newcastle player is offside? @FA_PGMOL have zero credibility

@Nufc627063261: VAR is there to stop us talking about it but here we are taking about again needs putting in the bin if ya ask me

@DylanBaker1986: It’s exactly what they want, the ability to alter results whenever and however they want.

@m44erl: It will be less talked about now with the 2-1 win but let’s not forget about the disgrace of VAR. The ball has came off 2 Forest players who have attempted to play the ball. Needs investigating.

@PGJohnson77: Said this many times. They need to adopt the Rugby League version. The ref can ask for VAR help if he wants to, otherwise it stays silent. Then each team gets 2 captains challenges on decisions per game. They can challenge the ref or the VAR. so much simpler

SHELVEY:

@AlbertLuque9: I love jonjo – such a quality player for us and a real fighter. He knows he’s taking the piss there

@davidcarps17: Shelvey should of been off anyway

@King_Kevs_Rant: Tbf, if I was a Forest fan, I’d question his loyalty. Looked like he was being forced to pretend he was happy to be there.

@RichySouthern: Shelvey was lucky to still be on the pitch. Showed he’s nowhere near our level anymore and lashed out twice.

@TheMokPope: I still like and appreciate Jonjo…..but I don’t miss his ‘tackling’

@Mick_at_Home: Shelvey is a prick, I was and still am delighted that he’s gone. Dirty bastard should have been sent off

@Toxicmop: Love Shelvey but can’t believe he wasn’t booked for at least 2 of his challenges tonight.

@OzzyMag: Uhhh Forrest were literally whinging twice as much & committing lazy fouls at ridiculous rate. Woeful football Think Shelvey is dirty that Bruno took his spot, outperforms him every week & is widely loved by fans already. Haven’t seen him play with that much passion with us

@IanDoyle5: To be fair and 200% honest shelvey was absolute dog sh*te, he was a great servant but my god we are streets ahead of his level now

TRIPPIER:

@ataylor1892: Absolute genius from Wor Skipper 😂👍🖤🤍🖤🤍

@Jeep_1970: I watched this at my local, when pen given I said immediately Isak, no doubt… Saw Tripps holding the ball, went to the toilet! Could not watch. Obviously the uproar (from WC) ran out to see Isak, and the whole bar laughing! I can take that 🤣

@carl1707: When I thought Trippier was taking it i couldn’t look I was screaming at the tv for Eddie to get involved 😂😂

@StyleMachineIl1: That was, quite simply, INSPIRED!! Let Forest piss about “intimidating” him, keeping Isak safe and sound…then calmly hand him the ball…laughing!!! Genius!

@ScottHo14019746: Our game management (at times) is immense, and we will only get better

@BobbyL6969: It’s literally an art. A winners one at that #NUFC

@wonderbonzi: Elite content by Trips hahahahaha

@Leo_Tarred: Yet everybody but Sky could see it coming 😂😂😂

@newcastleroots: Great Leadership… great to see him taking all the pressure off Isak.. Proper Team Captain…

@scottiesports: That smirk has to be on the front cover of the season review DVD 🤣

@deanoburns: That was incredibly clever from KT. All of the gamesmanship and mind games from Navas and other Forest players were aimed at him. Then he moves…football 🧠 #nufc

@m77sc: We are absolutely massive at playing the whole game

@dienoctuque: The funniest part was seeing the keepers smirk literally disappear off his face when tripps handed the ball to Isak

@warlawoowee: I had Isak 2 or more goals and I was like nooo man trips!!! Then I was YES man Trips, proper captain, taking all the shit from the opposition and protecting his team 🙌🏻
