Aiden McGeady awkwardly corrects Sky Sports presenter after Sunderland blunder

Aiden McGeady awkwardly corrects a Sky Sports presenter following a blunder after talking about the managerial speculation at Sunderland.

Viewers were watching the Black Cats winger sharing his thoughts on Celtic’s win against Rangers in midweek, but as topics switched to his League One side, he had to remind those in the studio that he still plays for Sunderland.

The 35 year old Irishman has been out of action with a knee injury since November, but clearly those at Sky hadn’t done their research, calling him a former Sunderland player during a question put to him.

As seen above, Football Daily, who love to upload content all things Sky Sports, ratted out the broadcaster and made them look just a bit stupid in the process.

There has been a lot of criticism towards Sky in recent years with such issues as their punditry lineup, some biased opinions and how badly shows such as Soccer AM has played out, with many cancelling their subscription.

Now in a latest dig at Sky, McGeady’s introduction on Sky Sports News can be added to the list after they seemed to suggest that he’d retired.

The presenter said: “Great to get your thoughts on that game, Aiden, want to turn your attention to another of your former sides, Sunderland.”

McGeady let the presenter finish but could be seen smirking to himself and didn’t know how to response.

Viewers were left cringing as he replied: “Former side? I’m still here.”

He then awkwardly laughed, potentially waiting for a reply to that, before utter silence then meant he had to just carry on with his answer.

Amusingly, looking at the full video of the interview on the Sky Sports website, they have removed the part that the presenter got wrong, see that HERE. Didn’t want to look silly there Sky?

Twitter users reacted as Aiden McGeady awkwardly corrects the Sky Sports presenter after that Sunderland blunder…

@TomBAFCjarvo: They don’t care below the championship tv schedules prove that @KeithY2Dickie: Wow. Sums Sky up.

@ChrisCarter90: Embarrassing

@K1733667: I remember early in the season, might’ve been a cup game and they had players they expected in the line-up at the bottom and it was players like Scowen and Grigg. Willis speaks for itself. A couple of more injured players and they spelled Stewart as Stuart. What a joke

@primesibbo: We need a new broadcasting service to cover the EFL, Sky are awful

@ITalkEverton: Supposed to be the leading sports media franchise our there and they continually make absolute howlers, or just are plain wrong. Embarrassing as ever @SkySportsNews

@alex_makel: Ahahahahaa fuckin hell

@Turner83Andy: God… @SkySports really is part of the problem with the football pyramid in this country. Only the prem deserves full national media coverage even though its less than a quarter of the professional game in this country. Making the rich richer since 1992.

@lord_barrold: Come on @SkySports_Keith – Have a word with your clueless colleagues

@MackemChr1st1an: Starting to hate sky sports like, absolutely useless

@HUGGYSAFC: Sky sports trying their hardest to get the exclusive because @WeePhillie made them look like dog meat the other day 😂😂

@HarryAnders272: @tmavfc state of this

@dpgroves6: Typical!! The quality of their reporting has really deteriorated over the last couple of years or so. They’ve ceased to be the “go to” place for sports news!

@Miketyson2007: Sky sports are patronising bastards end of..

@PokerMillers: They haven’t a clue unless its the top 10 clubs just look how they ignore lg1 and 2 you get if your lucky 1 or 2 games a month .A lot of people are feeding in the premier trough like pot belly pigs

@cowey26: Sky are fucking embarrassing

Aiden McGeady meanwhile went on and said Roy Keane’s appointment as the new head coach would give Sunderland fans a lift following Lee Johnson’s sacking.

Keane is set for talks along with other managers such as Grant McCann who is the second favourite for the job.

McGeady has worked with Keane at Celtic and with the Republic of Ireland, and speaking to Sky Sports News, said: “I played with Roy [Keane] I’ve known him for a long time. I played with him at Celtic, he was my coach at Ireland.

“He’s got a lot of fans and he’s still held in high regard here. It’s not my job to comment on speculation, but he would give the fans a lift.”

It would seem that he forgotten one potentially awkward future situation for McGeady after his comments on Keane made in an interview with the Irish Independent.

Starting his career with Celtic in 2004, the McGeady begun to impress fans as an 18-year-old, with Keane as a team-mate

It was the last season of Keane’s career, retiring after an unsuccessful playing year with Celtic.

McGeady was quoted in the Irish independent as stating: “I played with him at Celtic and that was bad enough.

“He is just one of those guys who always has something to say about everything. I got on with him as a guy, but he is just one of those guys who has an opinion on everything.”

Sunderland, who will not be rushing to make an appointment, currently sit 3rd in the League One table, with 54 points from 29 games played.

Lee Johnson, who was sacked by the club, released a classy and emotional statement on Friday as he bids goodbye to Sunderland fans.

His statement on the LMA website reads: “Firstly, I would like to thank Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, Kristjaan Speakman and the Board of Directors for allowing me the opportunity to be Head Coach at this great Club.

“To all the staff, whether that be my coaching team, players, the office staff, academy, training ground and stadium operations, your efforts have been nothing short of extraordinary. You are the heartbeat of the club and you should all be very proud.

“There are some amazing people within Sunderland AFC and some of you will be friends for life. Whether it be Karen Casey going above and beyond the call of duty, Joyce Rome’s fierce and unwavering support, or those who participated in our staff 6-a-side games on Fridays, there are far too many heroes at that football club to name you all.

“Upon arrival, my remit was changing the playing philosophy at the club, reducing the average age of the first team squad, and all the while competing for and gaining promotion. I leave the Football Club knowing we were on the right path, which gives me incredible satisfaction. I tried to lead the team with honesty and integrity from the moment I stepped through the door. I am extremely proud of the hard work put in by a talented set of players and staff. Working together tirelessly on the training ground with such quality has been an honour.

“Collectively we have achieved a lot in a short space of time, often in difficult circumstances. In the calendar year of 2021, we achieved the highest points per game average in the entire EFL, won the Papa John’s Trophy at Wembley, were amongst the highest goal scoring teams in the EFL, and took the Club to a Quarter Final of the Carabao Cup.

“During which I hope the Sunderland fans have found that love of a matchday once more, reconnecting with their Football Club with a collective pride of the hard work being done to play a brand of football to entertain as well as succeed.

“I have spent many hours helping Stuart Harvey and Kristjaan Speakman in recruiting top quality, often youth international talent and I am grateful to my football friends and contacts in football for their counsel and aiding us in recruiting those players at extraordinary value. We have also protected the pathway for young players from the Academy of Light.

“Making sure opportunities were there for the best home-grown players to get the minutes they need to develop within the First Team. That unique connection to the community, of one of their own representing them, is so important at Sunderland. Dan Neil is now an example for others to follow and his recent England call up is a credit to all.

“A special mention goes out to the Sunderland fans. Arriving in a pandemic with empty stadiums was strange to begin with but I am so glad we got to experience the passion that you guys bring to the Stadium of Light on match days. The attendances at this level are something you would not get at many clubs in the entire world.

“The experience has exceeded my every expectation, and I have felt a real connection with every Mackem I’ve met. It is a shame I couldn’t see the potential promotion through for you all, which was something I wanted to deliver for those that deserve it most. I was confident the work we did in January added the final pieces of the puzzle we needed to get there. I believe that this squad is ready now and I for one will be happy to watch them take you there.

“Finally, I would like to thank my immediate family, my wife Nicola and my daughter Izzy, who sacrificed so much to allow me to pursue my dream of managing this iconic football club.

“I have absolutely loved my time in the North East and am very grateful for the experience of managing Sunderland AFC. Nothing would make me happier than to see the club rise back to the top.”
