8th tier club New Salamis make the tough decision to cease operations at the end of the 2023/24 season, they said in a statement.
In recent months, speculation arose on their future, after joint manager Tommy Boxer said he was ‘still hopeful’ of finding some new investment.
New Salamis announced in the London-based Greek Cypriot newspaper Parikiaki that due to ‘increasing financial restraints’ they had been looking to withdraw from the league.
It seems however they are unable to survive, as announced on Twitter on Tuesday night (23rd April 2024), as you can read below.
While being sad to see New Salamis disappear, questions surface as to whether Stowmarket Town, who are bottom and haven’t managed to win a game in the Isthmian League North Division this season but could avoid relegation and get a reprieve.
There had been only one effective relegation from the division this season due to East Thurrock United’s withdrawal early on in the campaign. But now with New Salamis going under, what happens now?

CLUB STATEMENT:
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the decision for New Salamis 1st Team to cease operations at the conclusion of the 2023/24 season. After careful consideration of various factors, including financial challenges and structural limitations, the club’s management has made this difficult decision in the best interest of all stakeholders involved.
We would like to take this opportunity to express our deepest gratitude to all former and current players, coaching staff, and administrative personnel who have been part of the New Salamis family throughout the years. Your dedication, passion, and unwavering commitment to the club have been the driving force behind our successes and cherished memories.
In particular, we extend our sincere appreciation to Tom Boxer and Finlay Johnson for their exemplary leadership and management of the team under exceptionally challenging circumstances and with minimal resources this season. Their tireless efforts, resilience, and dedication have been instrumental in maintaining the spirit and integrity of New Salamis FC during trying times.
Whilst the club is coming to an end, it is a subject of immense pride the team have steered clearly away from relegation so comfortably, whilst giving young players the opportunity to continue the New Salamis Legacy as they head onto promising careers in the game.
Thank you, Lys Demetriou, for your unwavering dedication and tireless efforts in working diligently to keep the club running. Your commitment to New Salamis FC for four seasons has been invaluable, and your contributions have not gone unnoticed. We deeply appreciate your hard work and passion for the club.
While this decision marks the end of an era for our 1st team, we remain immensely proud of the legacy we have built together and the profound impact the club has had on the local community and beyond. As we bid farewell to this chapter, we carry with us fond memories and enduring friendships forged on the field and beyond.
We are delighted to announce that despite the decision for New Salamis 1st Team to cease operations, the youth teams will continue to thrive and represent the spirit of the club. It brings us great joy to see the youth continuing to embrace the values and traditions of New Salamis FC, ensuring that the legacy of the club lives on through future generations. We extend our full support to the youth teams and wish them every success in their endeavors.
Once again, thank you to everyone who has been a part of the New Salamis journey. Your contributions will always be remembered and cherished.
Joint manager Finlay Johnson said in a tweet: Too long a list of thankyous to make this season possible!
“Just a small part of the last chapter, love and respect to anyone who represented this club over the years.
“I have feeling they’ll be back one day.”
Player/manager Tommy Boxer wrote: “I am grateful to have had the opportunity to be a player and manager at this club. It was more than just football 🇨🇾.
“It’s been tough off the pitch all season but credit to all the players for playing for nothing other than love and finishing 15th in a competitive league
“Thank you to the committee, in particular Athos and Stathi. for giving me the opportunity to be apart of the journey. What you have both achieved in life and with the club is what people dream about. ❤️
“One more game to go and then it’s time to rest up and switch my phone off 😂.
“Let’s see what the future has in store for me either as just a player or as part of a management team. ⚽️”
This was the reaction on Twitter as the 8th tier club make the tough decision to cease operations at the end of the 2023/24 season…

@AJ_Dream18: Great club and top people. Had the pleasure of playing against you guys and have nothing but great things to say about you all
@Metzyco1: Sorry to hear such sad news, it’s never good to hear the demise of a football team. We know only too well what effect it has on the players and supporters when Bury was thrown out of the league. All the very best to everyone at the club and hope you are back one day soon.
@AxeAttack8: Really sad to hear this. When Brightlingsea came over to yours this season you were a friendly and hospitable club. Even though you beat us I can still recall clapping your team off the pitch! Good luck to everyone for the future👏👏👏👏
@sbizz_10: What a story. What a club. What a journey. Always showed me so much love! All the best to everyone involved in the club from top to bottom. ❤️❤️
@edmonds_alan: Sad news, second team in our league this year to finish, at a time the Premier League is swimming in millions of ££.
@d9asa: Today is a sad day as we bid farewell to New Salamis. 💔 I’ve cherished my time as the club’s top scorer, winning the league& promotion. I’m thankful 4 the wonderful memories created. To all who have been part of this journey, thank you. The spirit of New Salamis will live on ❤️
@ryanhervel28: Gutted to hear this today but equally so proud and grateful to have played and captained such a special club for so many years. The memories and legacy created will always remain ⚽️❤️ What a journey it’s been 🤝🔴⚪️
@StevenBushboy: Never like hearing of a club folding. Best wishes to you all, and hope you come back in some form in the future.
@mob_morley: Very sad to read this. The financial implications of running a team at this level has become so ridiculous. I predict that in the next few seasons other teams/clubs will be having to do the same. Best of luck with your youth teams. 💛🖤
@TootingBecFC: No budget at Step 6 is tough, at Step 4 it’s witchcraft! Amazing effort and sad to see the club fold. What a journey though, shame the economics of non-league football is just too much for most now. More clubs folding every week.
@AmberWaveGY: Sending our best wishes and love to the club, players, fans, management and everyone involved. It’s such a horrible thing when a club folds. We wish you all the best ❤️ – Amber Wave.
@eiffel_71: Thoughts to everyone at the club. Best wishes for the future.
@Robinho19721: Very sad news. Saw you this season and you were a bloody decent team. Good luck to all the players for the future ⚽️
2 years ago today winning the Spartan Premier Division one of my happiest moments in football.
Very sad to hear this news, this is a day to celebrate their achievements, and remember the great journey from Sunday League to the Isthmian League.
