7 goal thriller as Chelsea survive late scare; Wolves fans aim chants at owners and Pereira

Wednesday night saw a 7 goal thriller as Chelsea survive a late scare; Wolves fans meanwhile aim chants at the owners and Vitor Pereira.

Chelsea secured a dramatic 4-3 Carabao Cup last-16 victory at Wolves, overcoming a second-half collapse from a 3-0 half-time lead as Tolu Arokodare and David Moller Wolfe (twice) threatened a comeback, with Jamie Gittens’ incredble late volley proving decisive after Liam Delap’s red card.

Early goals from Andrey Santos, Tyrique George, and Estevao Willian were helped by Wolves errors amid fan protests against manager Vitor Pereira and owners Fosun, while Chelsea introduced key starters to hold on and advance to face League One Cardiff City in the quarter-finals.

It was when Chelsea went 2-0 up after just 15 minutes that Wolves fans were heard chanting “We want Fosun out”, “We’re going down”, and “You’re getting sacked in the morning” – towards manager Vitor Pereira, with the club bottom of the Premier League and still without a win.

But come full time, all they could do was applaud their efforts fighting back and coming so close to a comeback.

Pereira said: “This is maybe one of the best groups of players in my career, with spirit and character, to try to change the situation. When you change 11 players from the last game, you take the risk.

“It’s my responsibility. We changed 11 players today and we play with 11 players who have not been playing for a long time. The connection is not easy for this kind of game.

“It is very difficult for a team to come back from losing 3-0 to show what they did in the second half.

“We spoke at half-time and I told them it is my fault, but I want to see my team and the spirit. We won 3-1 in the second half. The goal we conceded was a pity. We had the chance to score more goals.

“What a second half. In the first half, we conceded the first goal and when I looked at the team, they were a bit lost and we conceded the second and third goals.

“We showed the supporters we can do it again. We just need a win to believe and move on. We won the second half 3-1 but it was a pity they got that goal.

“I am very happy with the spirit we showed in the second half and with our supporters.

“I don’t have any doubts that we can do it [stay up] and turn around the situation by the end of the season.”

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca speaking to BBC Sport after beating Wolves 4-3 in the Carabao Cup: “Very happy first half, very upset second half.

“It’s always complicated to go away and score three goals. We were playing nice [going] forward, great chances.

“Second half, we were not doing the right things. The first goal we conceded opened a little bit the game – gave them the boost and the energy to come back into the game. And then I think all of [the three goals conceded] we can avoid. Also, we had a very stupid red card that is completely unnecessary.”

On whether Liam Delap’s red card was deserved: “Absolutely, yes. A stupid foul and we can avoid that.

“I completely understand when there are red cards like Brighton or Manchester United as that is difficult, but the red card against Nottingham Forest and this red card we can avoid. We have to avoid that.

In response to whether Chelsea’s disciplinary record is embarrassing: “Yes, it’s embarrassing when it’s a red card like this because it’s two yellow cards in five minutes, 10 minutes, I don’t know, seven minutes. We can avoid that. So it’s not good.

“After the yellow card, I told him [Delap] four or five times to keep calm. But Liam is a player that when he’s inside the pitch, he’ll be playing the game for himself and he struggles to realise and to listen around him.”

Here’s how fans reacted to the 7 goal thriller as Chelsea survive a late scare; Wolves fans aim chants at owners and Pereira…

@Gman2307: Game of two halves. Terrible first and then a spirited second. The glimmer of hope is that we have shown that fight to maybe have a go at staying up. Question is does a new manger now get the best out these players?

@southbank82: @Wolves have failed us again in the transfer window. No Neto replacement, no Cunha replacement. Long contracts, no ambition. Offer coach Vitor dog sh*t new contract after not winning a Prem game in god knows how long. Clueless @Fosun_Intl, no direction, no plan. #WWFC

@CJ_7171: This squad might not be good enough but their morale & mentality has been battered away thanks to the dreadful tactics & set up by pereira. They are incapable of even winning a game of football. We will break Derbys record. What a fucking disgrace #wwfc #fosunout

@ST_1877: Fuck it. He isn’t going anywhere. Lets just get behind Vitor now for however long he remains here. It’s either Vitor or interim Steve Davis. Booing and singing for him to be sacked ay doing anyone any good. Let’s just back him ffs. #WWFC

@MolineuxExpress: People will hate to hear it but Hwang put in an unreal shift today 🫡 Commanded well and was constantly vocal, decent assist for Tolu and was Wolves’s main source for chances until he was subbed. #wwfc

@SC07TXH: Another loss on the manager, wrong starting line up that game was there to win tonight, can’t start playing at 3 zip when we have nothing to lose…. Great spirit in the second half to drag us into the game but we had nothing to lose…. Can’t start games with 6 defenders.

@WWFC_Bren: horrific goals conceded and very avoidable but happy to see some fight

@kevtheman10: I don’t think i need to repeat what everyone else has said about the match last night. However in the 2nd half, there were some Wolves fans that couldn’t make up their mind if they were staying or leaving everytime a goal went in. 🐺😂 #WWFC #CarabaoCup #WOLCHE

@WV1Rep: The 2nd half was always going to be better due to how inept and embarrassingly bad the 1st half was, but it was still nowhere near good enough. Yet again we score goals through desperation and lump ball into the box. We’re like a League 1 team living off scraps. #WWFC #Wolves

@joshdownes2001: Nice to know that there’s still some fight left. But ultimately we still conceded 4 against a sub par Chelsea side and this isn’t an anomaly

@Andyrewjw: Vitor proving he had the resources to beat Chelsea tonight but chose not to use any of them until the second half. Get him gone.

@CJ_7171: I liked VP as a bloke but it’s clear as day he’s absolutely clueless tactically & when it comes to setting up a team & he’s been playing for the sack for a while. Still our clueless little runt of a chairman can’t even see this. Worst owners in the country #wwfc #fosunout

@DDeltaRacing: Imagine what we could do with a competent manager who doesn’t start a home cup game with 6 at the back. The lads show great fight every game but the tactics are awful

@Kumpi3: If you look at that half in a vacuum, and ignore everything surrounding it, you have to be proud of that. Can’t ask more of them than what they put in there, absolute desperation to a man. A lack of quality but no lack of heart. Some good performances from fringe players too.

@WhittallClive: Biggest lesson tonight, apart from team selection, is that we have to show that intensity from the kickoff, not just when chasing games. Get that right, get the fans going and the points will come. (And get that bloody playlist sorted out to get some atmosphere back!)
