1 promoted and 2 relegated in the EFL – How the night played out

Another eventful weekend in the EFL saw celebrations at 1 club as they were promoted, and 2 teams have unfortunately been relegated.

Going into the day, we knew that Peterborough United could be promoted to Championship, while Cheltenham needed a draw to go up from League Two.

We also were aware that Grimsby will drop out of EFL if the Mariners lose and Barrow avoid defeat. So how did it end up playing out? Take a look below…

The first goal of the evening came in an earlier kick off, Newport County took the lead against Scunthorpe. Padraig Amond sent in cross is headed into his own net by Scunthorpe’s George Taft, before Mickey Demetriou doubled the scoreline by the 35th minute, then went 3-0 up through Lewis Collins on the 40th.

A win tonight meant that County take three points clear of eighth-placed Salford City. A draw for Scunthorpe would see the Iron mathematically safe from relegation.

On the 18th minute, Scott Quigley struck a brilliant penalty to put Barrow into the lead at Forest Green before Bobby Thomas made it 2-0.

Barrow knew if they won, that pretty much sends Southend down because of the Shrimpers’ inferior goal difference unless they perform a miracle and see Scunthorpe heavily defeated in their games.

Cheltenham Town needed a point to go up against out-of-form Carlisle United but fell a goal behind on the 33rd minute with Joshua Kayode scoring.

At the other end of League Two, Grimsby went behind with Luke Waterfall knocking in an own goal at play-off-chasing Exeter. At that point, it meant Grimsby were dropping out of the EFL. That was until Lenell John-Lewis scored a penalty to level the scoreline just before half time.

A big goal was scored on the 41st minute in League One as Jake Beesly poked Rochdale in front against Wimbledon. A win meant that it would take the Millers to within two points of safety and just three behind the Dons.

Accrington were 2-0 up against Portsmouth to keep their play-off hopes alive while a loss for Pompey meant they’d drop out of the top six as it stands with Charlton leading Crewe 1-0.

In the 8pm kick off, it didn’t take Peterborough look to go ahead against Doncaster. A 10th minute goal from Joel Ward meant the Posh were going up to the Championship as it stood.

Darren Ferguson’s side went 2-0 up on the 23rd minute thanks to Sammie Szmodics, though Doncaster got one back before half time via Fejiri Okenabirhie, it still meant Peterborough would be going up, but they would want the job done now rather than later.

HALF TIME | STATE OF PLAY
– Peterborough would be promoted to the Championship (2-1 up against Doncaster)

Chris Hussey leveled in Cheltenham’s fixture against Carlisle with a stunning free-kick. Remember, a point was enough for a Robins promotion.

There was another huge goal for struggling Grimsby who turned things around against Exeter on the 58th minute. Jay Matete made it 2-1 to the Mariners to take them to within four points of safety.

With minutes remaining, Ryan Bowman broke Grimsby hearts. The substitute headed Exeter 3-2 in front. Grimsby head out of the Football League as it stood.

On the 59th minute of the 8pm kick off, Posh turned sloppy and Doncaster punished them as Taylor Richards clinically stabbing the ball home. Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson was furious on the touchline. 2-2 it finished meaning Peterborough couldn’t go up tonight.

FULL TIME | STATE OF PLAY
– Cheltenham promoted to League One (1-1 against Carlisle)
– Grimsby relegated to the National League (lost 4-3 at Exeter)
– Southend all-but relegated to the National League (minus eight GD compared with Scunthorpe)

Fans reacted as 1 are promoted and 2 are relegated in the EFL…

@JrKroz: Grimsby fans, advice for next year – when you come to Maidenhead don’t go to the pub straight out of the l station. Go to the town centre, “Off The Tap”. It’s better. You’ll find that in our league the fans are a nice lot – obvs outliers – but we’ll try to make you feel at home.

@markdonnyiron: Says it all when we rely on GTFC getting relegated to effectively secure our Iron league status, as we can’t rely on our own bunch of bottlers. Fair play to you, unlike us, you kept fighting till the end!

@LeeBradley9: Well done to Fenty and @IanOllie7 what a great job you’ve done, at least you will be gone next week Fenty

@Matt69tomo: Can’t fault the players in these last 10 or so games they’ve given it everything. Damage was done by Holloway, day and fenty. No preseason, covid clauses in contracts the list goes on. Hopefully a new era will begin very soon and we can be back in the league where we belong

@Joshuantfc: Proper club grimsby! Hope you guys come back up!

@Rallers82: Sad night for @officialgtfc. You can’t fault the players these last 10-15 games. That said, a long needed reset of the club is so close now so there is definitely room for optimism. Still, won’t stop me having another glass of wine to drown my sorrows. #utm #gtfc

@AshleyIain4: Its embarrasing that our shambles of a club are celebrating your loss to cover our own short comings… we were very lucky this year

@Grumpy_GreyHead: The rebuilding starts today. The lessons must be learnt today. We must return stronger. I don’t give a fuck what league we’re in, I’m black and white till I die. #UTM #GTFC

@luke_dobbie: That’s what you get for releasing Jack Keeble, sweet karma

@BaWBarmy: This has been the worst season for #gtfc ever. Holloway, May and Fenty with his appalling behaviour have made this season far darker than any other in our 142 year history.

@ThommoUK77: I remember been at Burton when we went down. It was devastating, didn’t think the club would ever get back …. but we did and we can do it again! Its a sad night for the club/Town but the fans will always stick by the club #gtfc
