2 champions, 1 promoted and 3 relegated in the EFL – How the day played out

Another eventful weekend in the EFL saw celebrations at 2 crowned champions, 1 were promoted, and 3 teams have unfortunately been relegated.

Going into the day, we knew that Sheffield Wednesday kept alive survival hopes with a 0-0 draw with Nottingham Forest but would be relegated if Derby get a result at Swansea.

Wycombe face relegation unless they win and hope other results go in their favour. Rotherham can also go down if they lose and Derby win. Norwich could clinch Championship title if they win or Watford fail to win.

Peterborough could win promotion; Northampton and Rochdale could both be relegated. Cambridge and Bolton could both be promoted; Southend must win to stand a chance of avoiding drop. So how did it end up playing out? Take a look below…

What a start and what a goal it was for Wycombe and Uche Ikpeazu. On the 4th minute, he picked the ball up on the right corner of the penalty area, turned and got the ball out of his feet away from Chris Mepham before unleashing a perfect left-foot curling effort beyond the full-stretch of Asmir Begovic in Bournemouth’s goal.

Reading look primed to upset the party at Carrow Road as they took the lead against title-chasing Norwich. A free-kick was sent in across the face of goal and Josh Laurent leaped to head home at an acute angle on the 12th minute.

A great goal was scored by Gethin Jones for Bolton who went 1-0 up against Exeter on the 15th minute. He got into the box and side-footed it past the keeper. The Trotters would be on course for promotion at it stood.

Rotherham fell behind in their must-win game against Blackburn as hot shot Adam Armstrong netted his 26th of the season on the 17th minute mark. Angus MacDonald was deservedly punished for trying to over-play in on halfway and has his pocket picked by Armstrong before he slotted the ball under Jamal Blackman.

Scott Quigley have Barrow the lead against Southend on the 20th minute with the Shrimpers knowing they must win to stand a chance of avoiding relegation.

Joe Dodoo scored for Wigan at Hull on the 19th minute. A massive goal for Wigan as if they match Northampton and Rochdale’s results then they were safe.

George Honeyman put Hull back in front against the Latics on the 22nd minute. Arguably been one of the best midfielders in League One and gave them a great chance of sealing the title. 2-1 Hull by this point.

On half an hour, there was a poor goalkeeping clearance by Reading keeper Rafael Cabral who ended up playing Norwich through to put Kieran Dowell through to dink a shot from the edge of the box.

Anthony Scully scored for Lincoln on the 31st minute, going in front against Peterborough, a goal which keeps the Imps’ promotion hopes alive. A draw for Posh would be enough to clinch promotion to the Championship.

John White equalised for Southend also on the 30th minute. Only a win would do to give Southend any chance of staying in the EFL.

HALF TIME | STATE OF PLAY
– Norwich Championship champions (1-1 against Reading)
– Sheffield Wednesday relegated to League One (0-0 against Nott’m Forest)
– Wycombe relegated to League One (winning 1-0 against Bournemouth)
– Hull League One champions (winning 2-1 against Wigan)
– Northampton relegated to League Two (losing 1-0 against Blackpool)
– Rochdale relegated to League Two (losing 1-0 against Doncaster)
– Bolton promoted to League One (winning 1-0 against Exeter)
– Southend relegated to the National League (drawing 1-1 against Barrow)

A huge goal was scored as the second half restarted. Derby County took the lead thanks to Wales international Tom Lawrence who heads them ahead from Nathan Byrne’s cross from the right. That meant Wycombe, Rotherham and Sheffield Wednesday were all going down as it stood.

Another three huge goals came in moments that followed Derby’s opener – this time in the League One and Two promotion races and relegation battles.

Anthony Scully got his second of the game to put Lincoln 3-0 up at Peterborough, who only needed to draw to win promotion.

In League Two, Exeter equalised at Bolton, potentially putting the Trotters’ promotion campaign on ice.

And at the bottom, Terrell Egbri put Southend in front at Barrow, keeping their survival hopes alive at it stood.

On the 56th minute, Doncaster went 2-0 up at Rochdale, Taylor Richards with his second. It meant Rochdale are in serious trouble in the relegation zone and could be relegated from League One today.

Swansea went level as Morgan Whittaker managed to get just enough power on his header to get across the line. Kelle Roos best effort can’t stop it from getting over the line after a second look from the technology. Hopes alive yet again for Rotherham and Sheffield Wednesday fans.

Even more so on the 66th minute, with Connor Roberts putting Swansea in front a, diagonal ball across from the right was met by Roberts running in from deep to volley it home perfectly and give Roos no chance of stopping it, meaning that Rotherham, Sheffield Wednesday and Wycombe were all safe going into the final day.

2 champions, 1 promoted and 3 relegated in the EFL

Norwich looked to be champions by the evening as moments after Brentford’s second against Watford, Norwich took the lead against Reading as Kieran Dowell fires in from a tight angle for his second of the afternoon.

Peterborough got a goal back against Lincoln through Siriki Dembele on the 65th minute.

The 69th minute saw good news for Colchester fans, but terrible for Salford as Joshua Bohui put the U’s in front against their 10-man opposition. It meant as it stood Salford would be slipping out of that final play-off position in League Two and Colchester heading fro safety.

Jamal Lowe had the ball in the back of the net for Swansea but an offside flag was up. At the other end, Colin Kazim-Richards was so close to making it 2-2 but Freddie Woodman pushed his header behind for a corner.

Hull set for the League One title after John Magennis put them 3-1 up at home to Wigan on the 67th minute. That’s because closest rivals Peterborough were losing – but Jonson Clarke-Harris’ free-kick has brought them back to 3-2 against Lincoln. If Posh can get one more they would be promoted.

Norwich coast their way to the Championship title as Xavier Quintila finds their third in style. He fired in a tremendous free-kick right into the top corner to put them out of sight. Pukki then made it 4-1 shortly after.

Rotherham went level on the 86th minute as Lewis Wing fires in a free-kick to the bottom right corner. How crucial could that prove?

Clarke-Harris scored a penalty in the final minute against Lincoln to make it 3-3 and seal the Posh back to the Championship.

Bolton conceded right at the death to give Exeter a 2-1 lead, meaning a big blow to their promotion hopes.

@samgoody23: Sad day… blood is on your hands, Ron Martin.

@charles_colin: Sad, sad day!! Ron Martin any tripe you can spout out now blaming everyone else? You are to blame, no one else, after getting rid of players and not replacing them and prolonging the agony with the embargo which devastated the season!

@robertaskew7: A sad day and one that could have been avoided. Disappointed and angry. However I will support them forever more. No matter where they play. UTB
