‘You’re a disgrace’ – Maidstone manager rages at his players after defeat against Altrincham

Maidstone United manager Hakan Hayrettin rages at his players after suffering a 3-2 defeat against Altrincham on Saturday.

After beating Maidstone at the Gallagher Stadium, Altrincham extend their unbeaten National League streak to five games.

Josh Lundstram had too much space in their penalty box, the visitors took a 19-minute lead, scoring from close range.

Toby Mullarkey nearly doubled the lead, missing his effort with the ball going wide. The hosts made it 1-1 just two minutes before the end of the first half with Regan Booty scoring the penalty kick.

Maidstone’s Roarie Deacon could have got his side in front, but his determined effort from 20 yards came back off the crossbar.

Altrincham got their second of the game with a goal coming on the 64th minute thanks to Connor Jennings.

Chris Conn Clarke made it 3-2 to Alty before Booty scored a late consolation.

“I told them they’re a disgrace,” said Hayrettin as reported by KentOnline. “They can’t go out there and play like that.

“I’m being honest, and I’m too honest sometimes, but we were nowhere near it from start to finish.

“We were off it and I don’t know why. That’s not us. We have a go, don’t we? I can’t try and kid people after that performance. How can I?

“I apologise to the supporters. Whatever happens, I always used to say they’re going to fight and they’re going to have a go. But there was no fight today.”

“The spirit was good before the game, everything was right but we weren’t at the races, simple as that,” said Hayrettin.

“I can’t say ‘he did well and he did well’ because no one did well.

“I thought the kid from Millwall was all right but he got booked and pulled a bit of a muscle so I had to take him off, but the rest of them weren’t at it, and that’s the truth.

“That’s what irritates me because I pride myself on getting my teams ready to go out and the least they’ve got to do is put in a shift.

“Today, we didn’t even do that. I demand that, and I didn’t get it.”

Phil: The lads are performing, aren’t they? We’re clicking. I’ll be honest, I was worried about this all week. I knew the conditions would be bad today. Loads of games off. Thankfully Maidstone as managed to get this on for us. So we’re delighted with that and we’ve come a long way. We’ve prepared. Right. Right mentality from the players and we got the result I think we deserved. It was a great first half.

Interviewer: Many say that we could have been out of sight by half time. What was your view on the penalty?

Phil: I didn’t think it was. I spoke to the ref. I felt the ball’s hit his leg and hit his hand and took ever such a long time to decide. The lino’s not give it either. So, yeah, really difficult one. The rules have changed so many times. It has undoubtedly hit his hand, but it’s not an action towards the ball, it’s not gained him any advantage. It’s bounced up and hit his hand, which is really frustrating.

Interviewer: Connor Jennings’s obviously extended his loan for another month.I was going to ask you before the game how important he is for the side, but I think he’s just delivered how important he is there.

Phil: Well, as you said, unchanged. So that in itself shows that he’s doing really well. He’s giving us a platform to play off again. The biggest word I’d use to describe Connor, is unselfish, he’s played, he’s intelligent, he’s outstanding, and it really helps us.

Inerviewer: And the player that I want to give Ash out out to today, which the guys in the commentary box thought was outstanding as well, was Eddie Jones. I thought he was an absolute workhorse today. Up and down this right of this lefthand side and nearly got a good opportunity for himself towards the end going forward.

Phil: He is, he’s a front foot defender and he’s really coming into his own and we’re delighted light with Eddie and his performances of late

Interviewer: And obviously that’s now five games unbeaten, I believe, Maidenhead on Tuesday night another big challenge. It is. I think we’re in the hands of the gods, though, with the weather. A lot of the Northwest games were off today. Hopefully we can get ours on. We’re desperate to keep playing playing, so if we can get some frost sheets on, maybe. We got to do whatever we can at the moment to get these games on it, and we certainly will as a football club.

Fans reacted as the Maidstone manager rages at his players after defeat against Altrincham…

@elliott9kev: Finally some strong word’s from the bloke about time

@Raymondo_316: Just 2 wins in 19 games and people act like everything is fine 🙄 This is getting ridiculous now.

@JagsStones: Hak out – absolutely horrendous

@Andy17Mason: Although Jack Barham works his socks off hitting long balls up to him against 6′ plus defenders does not work. Need to keep the ball on the ground.

@tobywatson08: Make sure to practice defending in training

@DSkinnerLegal: I am always reluctant to criticise but we weren’t great today. Sluggish at times. Altrincham were coming down our left flank at will and it’s frustrating seeing Galvin on the bench who would have solved that immediately.

@luk3j3ff: Something has to change.

@ollyy_mufc: Clubs a mess but no one will bat an eyelid

@Tier6: That was cold and grim.

@timsmartin06: I froze my nuts off for what? At times we were quite good, but, most of the time lack of movement, lack of commitment, lack of enthusiasm, in fact looked like they didn’t want to be there. Think we better except we’re going straight back down unless we improve.

@ChrisPr82054335: Deacon is utter rubbish, probably our best signing all be it loan, galvin has had to sit and watch him fall over, give the ball away whilst freezing his Crown Jewels off. When is the management going to realise that system doesn’t work at this level?

@Itsnotlookingg1: What happened to Binnion Williams. He looks unfit and sluggish and was caught out of position all game
