Altrincham come back from 2-1 down in the 88th minute to go on and win 4-2 in the 95th minute against Scunthorpe on Saturday.
It was quite the turnaround in Neil Gibson’s first match as permanent manager, but no one could have seen this ending coming.
Scunthorpe led 1-0 through Carlton Ubaezuonu’s 13th-minute overhead kick, then Tom Crawford headed home from an Altrincham corner to make it 1-1 on 34 minutes.
The Iron regained the lead on the hour thanks to Alfie Beestin with a cool finish, before Matty Kosylo made it 2-2 in the 88th, but that began a scoring spree for Altrincham, with substitute Olly Crankshaw scoring twice in stoppage time to seal a dramatic 4-2 victory.
Just have a look at the dramatic scenes below…
Altrincham were 2-1 down in the 88th minute, by the 95th they were 4-2 ahead⏰

Altrincham’s Neil Gibson said: Yeah, it feels fantastic. Obviously, I don’t think many expected that. It’s fair to say, 87 minutes gone, we kept looking over at the board. What we’re trying to instil in the players is togetherness and a belief.
“Days like today will help that enormously. We stood there, we’re looking at each other at 2-1 down. I thought Scunthorpe are a very, very good team. I’m not taking anything away from them, but I didn’t feel they were better than us today. I thought certain moments they took their chances better than we did, but we never gave up at all.
“What I’m trying to instil into the group is, and we all are, is that we stick together in tough moments. We find a level of resilience and we never believe we’re beaten. Something that I want to try and instil in all my teams, which has always happened previously, is we go right until the end. You don’t think you’re beating us until the final whistle goes. The players really took that on board today.
“Once the second goal came, we were never going to be settling for the 2-2. We really needed to force that home with the momentum that we’d built. Wonderful for the crowd, really, and the people associated with the football club to have moments like today. It’s a long, old season and they’re with us through thick and thin.
“We want to try and give them as many good opportunities and good moments and good feel factors as we possibly can.”

Scunthorpe’s Andy Butler said: “I thought for the first eight or five minutes we controlled the game, barring a few mistakes in terms of giving balls away centrally and counter-attacking.
“Two good goals, excellent finish and then a great ability to play for Alfie Beestin. Felt comfortable, but then the last five minutes we switched off and we got punished.
“The goals we gave away today were poor and it’s something we’ll have to look at. It’s a frustrating time because we didn’t come here to get a draw, we came here to get a result and unfortunately we lost.
“The last goal was a non-event because we had to go for it and we could have snuck it with a few ricochets in and around the box.
“Three goals we gave away, so poor.”
Interviewer: “It felt like margins again, didn’t it? Keeper at that one end pulls off a well-deserved and deflected effort and then a couple of minutes later it equalises. It felt very similar in that respect to last weekend, didn’t it?”
Andy: “Yeah, it did. It’s something we’ll have to look at because when we make changes, the changes didn’t make the effect that we wanted to have. They made changes similar to last week that made them better. We made changes today that didn’t make us better.
“It made us a little bit more open and a little bit less compact, so it’s something we’ll have to look at and learn from. We always say we learn from losses, so we’ve had a little bit of a learning curve. But what we can’t do now is make a repeating event where we concede their goals.”

Here’s how fans reacted after Altrincham come back from 2-1 down in 88th minute to win 4-2 in the 95th minute…
@PeterGNeal: Alty don’t do this. Make subs that make a difference, Score 3 in 5 minutes, Kossy scoring, a Cranky worldie, Golf Road in ecstasy. They do now. Neil Gibson’s red and white army…
@BrianRo37622801: Not seen a finish like that at Alty for years. Bizarre, but very well deserved
@FillyMike: Joy back on the golf road. Amazing finish. Big hearts under the new gaffer and if crankshaw can find more of that happy times to come
@Shimpa96: It’s nice to be the team scoring the last minute goals instead of conceding them. Cracking result!
@LyricistAzzy: Gibbo doing Gibbo things! We all love @leejones_red & what he brings! With the roar of the Dragon & the famous @altrinchamfc fans! You can the Stir in the stands! Believe me when I say…. @NeilGibson22 team are on there way, there’s no denying the Robins are soon to be flying…
@Inter_Alty1977:
Brilliant win & performance! 👏👏👏
Last 15mins in terrible weather was amazing
…especially 89th, 90+1, & 90+4 mins – wow!
What an ending to the match! 🙂
@Altrinchamnorge: What a feeling!!! Give me a minute, need to catch my breath 🤩😮💨
@rosscofowler: Defending for their equaliser is disgusting
@StevenGiblin2: Epic last 10 mins. Shame the clips don’t include the 30 seconds before the last goal. Bodies on the line, blocks and bravery in abundance. Well done @altrinchamfc
@CallumHallett6: 🤯 An immense amount of character from Alty to turn this around within the last 10 minutes! 👏 A massive result for Neil Gibson, as he begins to steady the ship again; Altrincham surely still have sights on a playoff spot? Crankshaw has had a tough time of things in recent seasons; 2 MASSIVE goals in injury time here.
@halfjdlimited: Well done @ollycranky1. Really proud of you. It’s been a tough road back!! Hopefully see a few more goals now 😀
@DanCrankshaw: Unreal bro @ollycranky1 do you even score normal goals 🤣
@TheScunnyLad: The state of that shitshow
@JeremyArnold31: Legendary comeback and scenes
@1978Gez: Gibbo doing Gibbo like things again. A team in their manager’s mould. Whilst Scunny’s manager zipped his coat up and retreated towards the stand Gibbo was practically on the pitch urging his players on. Getting booked. In his tracksuit getting soaked. Just like his players.
