The club said on their website: “We are disappointed to report that two York City players were threatened with physical violence outside the stadium after Tuesday night’s defeat to Hereford.
“York City Football Club will not tolerate physical violence or threats.
“We are liaising with local police and we ask that any witnesses please contact the club directly.
“We pride ourselves on being a family orientated and friendly club and believe that the individuals in question are not a true reflection of our supporter base.”
Steve Watson spoke on his disappointment after the incident: “These lads go out and do their best every day in training and in every match. Do they really deserve to be confronted outside the car park and threatened? Absolutely not.
“The thousands of York City fans, who support us week in week out, will no doubt feel the same way as we do about this.
“It’s really annoyed me but at the same time we are going to use it as a tool to drive forward and put all of that into Saturday’s game.”
The club finished with: “On a similar note we would also ask for restraint and respect in regards to social media posts.
“Please take a minute to think about the effects of what you are writing, especially in this current climate, where social media has proven to have such terrible consequences on people’s mental health.”
Fans gave their reaction after reading that the York players were “threatened with violence”…
Only disappointed?! You should be absolutely sickened, disgusted & furious that someone thinks that is a reasonable way to behave, no matter how poor the team have been. Find them & throw the book at them.#YCFC

Just imagine doing a shift at work and then leaving to go home and being confronted and threatened about what you had done at work. Then go in the next day. Would you be in the right frame of mind to perform your job to the best of your abilities? I know I wouldn’t be able too.

Ban them for life , not true fans .

Appalling, abhorrent behaviour. I back the club 100% in trying to identify and prosecute the culprits. Just a shame you turn a blind eye when the tables are turned & it’s #ycfc staff calling fans vile names and offering them a fight. #hypocrites

I was "disappointed" that a player threatened supporters with physical violence with weapons, and was rewarded with a new contract. I was "disappointed" when we employed a director of football with a conviction for assaulting a police officer. (1/2)

Currently allegation. Facts – player threatens fans with physical violence on Twitter; club secretary abuses fans using sexual swear words on public transport in clip still on social media. Player gets new contract & secretary still in post. Respect = two-way Street.

Not acceptable.

Police are questioning Steve Watson??

OK the result didn't go as we would have liked but this is unacceptable. Remember we are still top of the league and think back to this time last year. We need to support the players not abuse them.

This is bad, there’s no excuse for that kind of behaviour but your grievance would have had much more clout if you’d have reacted the same way when one of the senior players threatened a fan with violence, and one of the senior staff called the fans “c*nts”
